In my quest to obtain a legal gun in Washington, D.C., I've gone to the registry office, taken a 5-hour course, filled out paperwork and met with the city’s only dealer. I’ve now fulfilled any requirements that can be done before giving the city the serial number of my new gun, so it is time to decide what to buy.

I've used the Aguila 60 grain SS round quite a bit in my normally ammo-sensitive 22/45 Ruger pistol. I was surprised. Clean burning, and cycles very well. 100 rds. with no problems or failures of any kind. Bullet drop, however, is significant as distance to target increases.

The runways, terminals and parking lots and roads at Reagan National are in Virginia. Some of the land by the river’s edge (up to the high water mark?) is DC.

You need to add an all steel, preferably stainless with at least a 3” barrel, better yet 4”.

I agree.

The plastic stuff in .40 has uncomfortable felt recoil for most people. If you don't take a class, learn how to "run the gun," and practice, then it doesn't matter.

I carry a Sig Sauer P229ST (stainless steel slide and frame) in 9mm and one spare mag.

Thank you for that info.

It would seem perhaps her only concern then is the manner in which she would transport the weapon in DC after leaving her home.

Of course, since Maryland is not one of the Utah reciprocal states unless she can transport in the same manner she may be required to fly out of VA. And regrettably, she would be limited to 28 jurisdictions (3 of the 31 I posted upthread require Utah residency).

Sad state of affairs for adult, taxpaying Americans.

Not only that, but as you know, being a reloader, that with a snubbie, you lose velocity which defeats the purpose of hot loads... unless it's intended to serve a dual purpose...

The runways are all built on the fill area. You’re right about the terminals-I forgot about that. I almost always flew out of Dulles even when I lived in Crystal City, so I never really had to worry about it.

A friend of mine was thinking of buying one of those super lite weight .357’s for his wife.

He shot it one time.

Changed his mind real fast.

He shoots my .41 mag all the time with no problem.

This is precisely why the armchair commandos shouldn't make recommendations on handgun selection if they have no hands on experience with the weapon and the caliber.

Last Spring, I took a three day Advanced Pistol Operator class and shot my 226ST in 9mm and consumed ~1,700 rounds. This one couple were shooting a G22 and G23. At the end of the first day, their fingers were taped up. They've since moved on to 1911s and Glock 17s and 19s.

I can see taping the web of your dominant hand between thumb and forefinger - the glock frame rubs me bad there after 500 rounds or so. But I've done courses with my glock 29 10mm with no more significant soreness than my glock 26, glock 23, glock 21, or glock 34. And the 1911 can wear on the skin just as easily.

First off be sure she gets a revolver, preferably 357 cal and have her shoot 38 cal hollow nose in it. Get away from the blocks of soap.

A guy brought his 1911 out to my place to shoot, and it kept jamming with him.

First he said there was something wrong with the gun, then there was something wrong with the mags, then there was something wrong with the ammo.

I shot it, no problem.

Didn't matter what ammo I used everything from 230gr hardball to 155SWC.

Didn't matter if I used his $35 mags or my $5 mags, no problem.

He was scared of the .45 so he limp wristed. Jam every time.

If that wasn't bad enough, should have seen his group with the 7mm mag he bought as a FIRST gun.

60 rounds and I don't think he hit the target with half after the first three.

For women just starting out with a firearm, check out the Smith & Wesson Model 317 AirLite, 317 LadySmith Revolvers.

In the article, she relates her love affair with the Taurus .454 Casull. She also says she's not going to carry and wants a full-size. If she goes the revolver route, any k-frame in .38+P or .357mag would better fit her needs. Or even one bigger in .45LC or .44 special. The .38 special (normal load) has about the same recoil on a steel k-frame than the .22 does on the 317 with its light aluminum frame. For even more kicks & giggles, a 3" Ruger GP-100 or similar N-frame s&w would sit totally rock solid in her hand and shoot .38's with the same recoil as me spitting watermelon seeds. Ok, maybe a little more, but you get what I mean.
