Newt takes no-adultery pledge

By ALEXANDER BURNS | 12/12/11 1:09 PM EST

When the Iowa social conservative group The Family Leader unveiled a sweeping pledge on marriage and abortion over the summer, Newt Gingrich was one of the candidates who passed on signing it.

Now, Gingrich has answered the pledge with a lengthy written response, vowing to support a federal marriage amendment, reinstate the Mexico City policy -- and, per the stipulations of The Family Leader pledge, to be faithful to his wife:

I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.

Gingrich's full response after the jump ...

To Bob Vander Plaats and the Executive Board of The FAMiLY LEADER:

I appreciate the opportunity to affirm my strong support of the mission of the FAMiLY LEADER by solemnly vowing to defend and strengthen the family through the following actions I would take as President of the United States.

Defending Marriage. As President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as Speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military. I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts. I will support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification. I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman.

I want Newt (and the other candidates) to vow that he won’t do a Viagra commercial like Bob Dole’s if they lose.

The only pledge he and others should be signing is the uphold the constitution pledge! The other "pledges" are potential traps, more likely to hurt than help.

Has Newt given testimony that he has accepted Christ as Lord and Personal Savior?

If so, that is news to me. Because if he understood the true meaning of salvation (Eph 2:8-9) why would he join the Roman Catholic Church? Some Roman Catholics who understand the true meaning of salvation sometimes do remain in the Church, but not many of them because many teachings of the RCC and the Bible are in contradiction. Especially the doctrine of salvation.

I don't see adultery mentioned anywhere in his letter.

Good point.... although there is some connection between infidelity and adultery, they are not synonyms. Amongst other things, if a spouse refuses to have sex with the one he or she is married to, that also is an act of infidelity.

WHEN YOU HAVE TO SIGN A PLEDGE TO REMAIN TRUE TO YOUR VOWS BEFORE GOD... MAYBE YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.

I think signing pledges is dumb. You either believe in something, or you don’t, and you follow through accordingly.

Signing a pledge means little, if it’s done for political gain.

If you understood the true meaning of salvation you would run as fast as you could to the nearest Catholic Church to repent, receive absolution, and receive communion at Mass.

I hope you’re going to wean yourself off of these non-intelligent postings.

Uh... if taking an oath before God, your wife, and your close family and friends doesn’t stick, how will signing a political pledge?

This latest ploy from Newt is as transparent as his lies.

If Newt is the best we can do, God have mercy on this nation.
