Newt takes no-adultery pledge
By ALEXANDER BURNS | 12/12/11 1:09 PM EST
When the Iowa social conservative group The Family Leader unveiled a sweeping pledge on marriage and abortion over the summer, Newt Gingrich was one of the candidates who passed on signing it.
Now, Gingrich has answered the pledge with a lengthy written response, vowing to support a federal marriage amendment, reinstate the Mexico City policy -- and, per the stipulations of The Family Leader pledge, to be faithful to his wife:
I also pledge to uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others.
Gingrich's full response after the jump ...
To Bob Vander Plaats and the Executive Board of The FAMiLY LEADER:
I appreciate the opportunity to affirm my strong support of the mission of the FAMiLY LEADER by solemnly vowing to defend and strengthen the family through the following actions I would take as President of the United States.
Defending Marriage. As President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as Speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military. I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts. I will support sending a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the states for ratification. I will also oppose any judicial, bureaucratic, or legislative effort to define marriage in any manner other than as between one man and one woman.

My mother and father were already in the process of getting a divorce, which she requested.”
Yes, and I assume that mrs riverdawg would also “request” a divorce if I were having an affair and she found out about it.
Sorry, I thought it wouldn’t need that pesky /s stuff........
His Wife requested the divorce, they had talked about it BEFORE wife was in the hospital, the girls already knew about it.
The point of my argument is..
The whole discussion on him asking for a divorce to his WIFE ON HER DEATHBED! WHICH WAS NOT TRUE!
“His Wife requested the divorce, they had talked about it BEFORE wife was in the hospital, the girls already knew about it.”
Of course. There is nothing in the salon.com article or in anything I have posted that contradicts that. But some people are pointing to Newt’s daughter’s “clarification” of the incident as evidence that nothing unseemly happened at the hospital. I beg to disagree, and Newt himself has said that he misbehaved at the hospital and deeply regrets the what happened there.
We need a President not a Saint!
“The whole discussion on him asking for a divorce to his WIFE ON HER DEATHBED! WHICH WAS NOT TRUE!”
I didn’t say it was true. However, it is true that Newt brought his daughters to the hospital to see their mother, who was in the hospital bed recovering from the previous day’s surgery for what turned out to be a benign tumor, and then proceeded to get into a heated argument with her about the terms and conditions of their pending divorce. Newt is on the record confirming this story, and has said that he misbehaved at the hospital and deeply regrets the incident.
Thanks!
So much for the “Character Counts” mantra of the not-too-distant past.
Sorry about that, I was getting the impression that the previous story was being defended which was not true, per the daughter’s statement.
As you know the lib’s love to expand and add lies to stories to improve their “Ends justifies the means” stance.
I was trying to make sure it didn’t go any farther then the the Facts.
Right now, there are much bigger fish to fry.
“Right now, there are much bigger fish to fry.”
I wish I was confident that Newt was ultimately going to be a successful cook.
“He didnt honor his pledge 2 other times, why would anyone think he would honor this one.”
This is an entirely valid point. Unfortunately, the Salon account of the hospital divorce discussion is a pack of lies: even WaPo concedes this point. http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/aspects-of-gingrich-divorce-story-distorted/2011/11/17/gIQA8iY4YN_story.html
This a private forum, not a public newsstand. Hollering “First Amendment” does not apply. Besides I was bending a rule myself (No cross-thread flame wars): I had just watched this person engage in a flame war on another thread, so I was expressing gratitude about it not being done here, especially since I’d probably find myself arguing on his side....
(I should have STFU myself....)
The fruits of his infidelity...You mean his current wife?
What is untrue about the 98 Story. Sounds the same as the link you provided only the link has more details.
This article also backs up the story from 98. Esquire? I don’t read it so don’t know which way it leans.

All this.... just to win the Iowa primary?
I wonder what he’ll do to win Nevada, just sayin’.
SO FED up with the self righteous hypocrits...read the bible...read about King David and Bathsheba..read about adultry being considered a sin if a man merely looks at a woman with lust in his heart...stock up on your rocks and throw em...but BEFORE you do...look inside YOUR own family and read the scriptures and see what it says about ANY divorced woman that has remarried...Newt has admitted before the world what he did that is enough for me. MORE than Clinton did!
I hope he makes the same pledge to the next wife.
