"In a new NBC/Marist poll, Newt Gingrich has surged into the lead in Iowa, but Mitt Romney's big lead in New Hampshire remains. NBC's Mike Viqueira and David Gregory report."
Newt Gingrichs surge in the polls isnt limited to just the early presidential-nominating contest of Iowa. According to new NBC News-Marist polls, the former House speaker has now opened up commanding leads in South Carolina and Florida -- two states that historically have played important roles in deciding the eventual Republican nominee.
Fueled by the support from conservatives and the Tea Party, Gingrich is ahead of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney by nearly 20 points in South Carolina. The winner of that state's primary has gone on to capture each GOP nomination since 1980.
And he leads Romney by double digits in Florida, whose primary ultimately ended up deciding the partys pick in 2008.
You can see why the Romney people are getting a little itchy, said Lee Miringoff, the director of Marist Colleges Institute for Public Opinion, referring to the Romney campaigns recent attacks on Gingrich. Gingrich ahead any way you slice it

Tea Party power
According to the two polls, Gingrich performs especially well among the most conservative primary voters.
Among Tea Party supporters -- who make up about half of all likely primary voters in South Carolina and Florida -- the former House speaker leads Romney by more than 30 percentage points in both states (51-20 percent in South Carolina and 57-22 percent in Florida).
Gingrich also enjoys huge leads among conservative and very conservative voters.

I read something that said Gingrich's election would hurt the Tea Party.
Real Clear Politics has Romney at 36 and Newt at 24.3.
You FReepers from New Hampshire: What can we do to help?
ping
Because he is talking conservative and he "ain't" backing down.
Pretty impressive!
I wonder what the media is going to try and spring on him to shut him down?
Remember, the Tea Party is you and me, not some publicity hound posing as a TP "leader" or "spokesman."
“I read something that said Gingrich’s election would hurt the Tea Party.”
Written by an Obama Journo-Lister, no doubt.
Remember, the left believes the Tea Party is now a NEGATIVE BRAND, thanks to three years of attacks on the idea, and that associating anyone with it is the kiss of death.
Prepare for the flood of “I'll never vote for Newt” folks, from folks who never vote anyway.
The conservatives who don't like Newt better coalesce behind one candidate soon or they are toast. It's too late to simply be against someone. It's time to pick a horse and ride. I'm curious to see how Newt holds up when the media really kicks in and goes after him.
This race is getting more and more interesting! I had no idea that we in the tea party were supporting Gingrich, but he IS a heck of a lot better than Myth....for what it’s worth.
Here is all you need to know about Newt Gingrich.
Who is the GOP establishment afraid of? It’s clear from the MSM.
Who is George Will afraid of and who is Obama’s campaign stooges scrambling to deal with? Gingrich.
In the words of Colonel David Hackworth, who is a “truth teller”? Gingrich.
Who won the debate? Gingrich.
I think the tea party is beginning to warm up to him. Newt is a pro-life, Reagan Coalition Christian conservative and he’s knowledgeable, experienced, fully vetted (sought redemption and is largely forgiven), is battle tested and rip-roaring ready to hit the ground running. No on the job training necessary. He’s a deficit cutting, tax cutting, budget balancing, welfare reforming, socialist healthcare program (HillaryCare) blocking, small government, big defense dynamo. He’s already taking the battle to the enemy. In short, we’re desperate and he’s exactly what we’re looking for.
I think it’s going to be hard to “shut him down”.....he understands the drill and he’s a tough old bird!
I’ve just NEVER considered him conservative. Interesting how things play out!
“I’m curious to see how Newt holds up when the media really kicks in and goes after him.”
There going to go after who ever is in the lead. Newt will handle it better than anyone else...
Newt Ping!
Karl Rove deeply saddened............
Ha ! NBC News/Marist polls are the new Tea Party standard. Remember that. What I do not like about this is so many people who think they are smart are falling for it. This thing is a set up.
And before he is the nominee you expect the media to expose Newt as an addict of big government on par with any Democrat. i’m fairly certain that MSM will destroy him in the general election with the same things they are just reporting right now.
Newt makes W look like a socialist.
Do you still "Luv W"?
Did you consider "W" to be a conservative?
The one issue that unifies TEA participants are, of course taxes. These are Newt’s positions on that issue.

“I had no idea that we in the tea party were supporting Gingrich...”
Me either. Newt’s a big government RINO. Oh, I’ll probably be forced to vote for him (as I bite my tongue in half) but I’ll never call him a ‘Conservative’.
Better than Myth for sure and a gazillion times better than the Muslim 0bama. Guess we’ll have to settle for Newt.
He’s not my first choice however he isn’t in the “no vote” column with Romney and Huntsman.
