Fox News Poll: Romney Bests Gingrich in Matchups Against Obama

Fox News Poll: Romney Bests Gingrich in Matchups Against Obama By Dana Blanton December 08, 2011 | Newt Gingrich has increased his lead over Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican nomination, yet the former House speaker is weaker than Romney with the general electorate.

In a hypothetical matchup, Barack Obama is just 2 percentage points ahead of Romney (44-42 percent), according to a Fox News national poll released Thursday.

Three weeks ago, Romney had a narrow 2-point edge over Obama in the head-to-head matchup (44-42 percent). In every other matchup of the two candidates over the past year, Obama has topped Romney by between 1 and 7 points.

Meanwhile, Obama tops Gingrich by 46-40 percent in the new poll. That’s mostly unchanged from last month when Obama was up 5 points over Gingrich (46-41 percent, November 2011).

President Obama’s advantage over Romney is within the poll’s margin of sampling error and it is at the edge of the error margin against Gingrich.

Among independents, Obama edges Romney by only 1 point and Gingrich by 5 points. In both of these theoretical matchups, about a quarter of independents do not support either candidate -- they are either undecided, would vote for someone else or wouldn’t vote at all. Voters who are part of the Tea Party movement are more likely to support Gingrich (77 percent) than Romney (70 percent) against Obama.

If Obama holds onto or extends his 6-point lead over Gingrich, it would be a landslide. Thanks dumb Republican primary voters for not considering Santorum.

Who says they aren’t?

Don’t believe the polls. They are spun to make you think what they want.

I am considering him, and NO ONE has polled me.

I wouldn't believe any poll out of FNC!

With Rove as their cheerleader, it's obvious Mitt is their man.

The Fox News poll is based on landline and cell phone interviews with 911 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide and was conducted under the joint direction of Anderson Robbins Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R) from December 5 to December 7. For the total sample, it has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Sorry, Fox News Polls are the worst of the worst.

Hey, it’s not too late for Santorum. All he has to do is convince the voters that he is the man. Failing to do that is not the fault of the voter.

Not a poll of likely voters.

Just registered voters.

At this point in the election cycle Reagan was losing to Carter.

Please have some faith. Can you believe that Obama would
beat Gingrich?

Remember 2010? The complete annihilationof the Democrats? Or how about Virginia's historic wins by Republicans?

The campaign hasn’t even begun yet. People haven’t heard much about Newt. When voters get a real chance to compare Newt with Twit, the GOP will win.

Here is what Time magazine reported after the 1980 election of Reagan:

“For weeks before the presidential election, the gurus of public opinion polling were nearly unanimous in their findings. In survey after survey, they agreed that the coming choice between President Jimmy Carter and Challenger Ronald Reagan was “too close to call.” A few points at most, they said, separated the two major contenders.

“But when the votes were counted, the former California Governor had defeated Carter by a margin of 51% to 41% in the popular vote—a rout for a U.S. presidential race.”

Just because one or more of the others suck doesn't mean anyone else doesn't suck.

No Palin, no peace.

“If Obama holds onto or extends his 6-point lead over Gingrich, it would be a landslide.”

That’s just laughable to put even an ounce of stock into a poll released the first week of December 2011 about a hypothetical election match-up in November 2012. One single poll taken any time doesn’t hold much credibility, it’s more the trend measured by multiple polls that matter. But a single poll taken this far out is almost entirely meaningless.

Sorry, Fox News Polls are the worst of the worst.

The whole Fox News operation is getting worse on a daily basis. They have given a tremendous magaphone for vile leftist like Geraldo (Jerry Rivers) Rivera, Shepard Smith and Bill O'Reilly to spout their anti-Christian, anti-American lies. And I've noticed that they marginalizing Sarah Palin. She appears very infrequently nowadays.

Fox is just a few small steps away from being totally in the enemy camp of the lamestream media. And, as you said, their polling methodology is terrible and has no credibility.

Santorum, right.

I saw a poll on Fox tonight, with both Romney and Gingrich ahead of Obama.

Gingrich is utterly unelectable. But hey. Go ahead and nominate him and we’ll talk in Nov 2012.

Did they run any polls on how a Republican would do against Obama?

Fox can continue to put lipstick on this pig, Romney, but he will not be nominated.

Go Newt Go.....

We have good people running for the nomination. None of them are lily white or perfect on all your favorite issues, but one of them will be our candidate. Any one of these candidates would be better than Obama, but a third party candidate would assure Obama’s reelection. Those are the realities. We can still throw the election back to Obama if we don't unite behind our candidate. November 2012 I will vote and vote Republican.

Yes. Gingrich has a lot of baggage and they will not help him. Remember 2010? When everyone was so sure that Reid would lose? Don't say that the 'establishment' didn't help Angle. Whatever the reason, she lost.

I'm not saying Gingrich will for sure lose to 0bama. I just wish we stop underestimating 0bama's ability to win.
