s Newt Gingrich a realistic threat to win the GOP nomination?
The Romney campaign certainly seems to think so. Ron Fournier, writing in National Journal, reports that Romneys campaign is in a state of near panic. The campaign put together a conference call with reporters featuring prominent GOP officials who lambasted Gingrich in terms that you rarely hear within a political party:
The speaker is running as a reliable and trusted conservative leader. What were here to say, with reluctance, but clearly, is he is not a reliable or trustworthy conservative leader, Sen. Jim Talent told reporters on a conference call arranged by the Romney campaign.
After that bit of throat-clearing, former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu ventured beyond the bounds of a typical political attack, signaling how seriously and, perhaps, desperately the Romney camp is taking Gingrichs rise. He called Gingrichs criticism of Rep. Paul Ryans budget plan, beloved by most conservatives, an effort of self-aggrandizement and the most self-serving anti-conservative thing one can imagine.
He all but called Gingrich crazy. Saying the attack on Ryans plan is part of a pattern of unpredictable behavior that goes back to Gingrichs days as speaker, Sununu termed it the most perfect example of irrational behavior that you do not want in the commander-in-chief.
I dont think Newt Gingrich cares about conservative principles, Sununu said. Newt Gingrich cares about Newt Gingrich.
Here are the polling numbers of the first four primary states, released yesterday by CNN, that inspired the MittFit:

Romney wants it so bad, but nobody wants him that bad as President. That’s the way it goes.

Sununu - the clown who foisted David Souter on Bush the Elder and vouched for his “conservative” credentials as a Supreme Court nominee.
Sununu - the clown who advised Bush the Elder that he would survive breaking his “no new taxes” pledge in the 1990 budget deal (Which Newt opposed).
Well, that almost seals the deal for me. Now if Romney could just get the double bonus of the coveted endorsements of McCain and Lyndsey Graham!

Jim Talent told reporters on a conference call arranged by the Romney campaign. They are trying to imply that Mitt is a reliable and trusted conservative leader, but even his supporters don't have the nerve to say something that would put half their listeners into uncontrolled laughter. Sorry MittSpokesRINOs, I agree that Newt is a sad and depressing choice, but he's a whole lot better than anti-gun, big government, RomneyCare creator Mitt Romney.

We are basing Mittens panic off of something Ron Fournier is saying? Fournier had an orgasm over Obummers Marxist “Roosevelt” speech this week. I don’t trust anything based off of this dudes logic. I will believe Mittens is panicked when I here him swear on the campaign trail while dragging on a Marlboro Red.

Wow, the AJC woke up and realized what time it is, moved their offices from downtown Atlanta (where they had been for over 100 years) to Doraville, cut their urban coverage and ramped up their suburban coverage in an effort to chase their declining readership...and they kept a fool like Jay Bookman?
The effort by Romney will fail, particularly this not-so-light handed message on marriage and religious faith. Lots of people have been divorced. Some people are still on first “marriages”. For example, Bill Clinton. Enough said? And conversion to a new faith as an adult? I think that shows he is open to ideas and found Catholicism appropriate for himself. In a nation founded on religious freedom and freedom of choice, how do you criticize that?

"But the details of the event are more than unseemly - they may, in fact, be illegal. Massachusetts's animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal "in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon. "An officer for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to a description of the situation saying "it's definitely something I'd want to check out." The officer, Nadia Branca, declined to give a definitive opinion on whether Romney broke the law but did note that it's against state law to have a dog in an open bed of a pick-up truck, and "if the dog was being carried in a way that endangers it, that would be illegal."
"Dog on Roof? What Was It Like for Romney's Pooch? - Scientists Say Dog Likely Experienced Wind-Whipped, Uncomfortable Trip - "Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family's hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon's roof rack. e'd built a windshield for the carrier, to make the ride more comfortable for the dog,".. Jordan Kaplan, the owner of Petaholics, a dog walking service in New York City,
and a lifelong dog owner and dog lover, said Romney's actions were uncalled for"
"Romney's dog - This is a distinction Mitt Romney probably could do without, but he is surely the first presidential candidate to be attacked for putting a dog with diarrhea in a carrier and tying it to the top of a station wagon. Romney's defense: Seamus liked it. [like the citizens under Romney's RomneyCARE, etc.?] "
"As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ''Dad!'' he yelled. ''Gross!'' A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding on the roof in the wind for hours. As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway."

Romney's bad behavior Exposed by Seamus
"Romney Loses Nomination Over Dog Abuse? - Romney was traveling that summer with his wife, five sons, and Seamus to his parent's cottage on Lake Huron. But hours into the ride, Seamus apparently suffered diarrhea, which ran down the back window of the car. .David Kravitz wrote on BlueMassGroup, a liberal blog. "It also strikes me as classic Romney: it solves a problem efficiently, in a business-like manner, and with no regard whatsoever for the suffering that the solution may cause."
