He has surged to the top of the polls, having been crowned the latest Tea Party favorite by the movements rank and file. Newt Gingrichsappeal is not universal among Tea Party conservatives, but for now he is their anointed warrior, boosted by his string of fiery debate performances filled with irreverent quips.
As Gingrich courts the group that will be so crucial to his success in Iowa and beyond, Gallups latest poll of registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents has him winning 47 percent of voters nationally who say they support the Tea Party movement. (More than half of Republicans consider themselves Tea Party supporters.) A month ago, Gingrich garnered 18 percent of Tea Party support, behind Herman Cain and Mitt Romney.
Obviously, hes really kind of taken over among that group, said Jeff Jones, the Gallup Polls managing editor. Theyve been casting about, looking for someone who is a better fit for them than Romney is. It looks like everyones had their chance and basically squandered it, so that leaves Gingrich.

That was really a good opportunity for her to STFU.
Maybe that's the plan. The GOP elite hate the Tea Party.
Palin has said she wont endorse till after Iowa.
After Iowa there won’t be anyone left but Gingrich and Romney.
I’m a Tea Partier - and NO! I don’t support Big Government Newt! It’s goes against EVERYTHING I have marched for and supported. The number of “Tea Party” people that are so willing to support the media’s pick - makes me want to vomit!
There are more conservative candidates running - but these “fair-weather” conservatives won’t support them because the media tells them they can’t win. It is beyond disgusting & it will give Obama a second term.
I pray to GOD that these sheeple will please wake up before it’s too late.
And a big government, NWO globalist.
I’m Tea Party, and I won’t be voting for Gingrich. There are already two candidates available to choose from, Bachmann and Santorum.
Stop saying you’re Tea Party when you are going to vote for Gingrich because you’re not.
It’s oxymoronic.
Go Newt!!!!!!!!!!! the voters are rallying behind Newt because they like his solutions; they like his statement that all the republican candidates would make a better president than Obama; they like NEWT attacking Obama instead of the other gop candidates; they like Newt going after the media. As the Bachmanns go after everyone but Romney...Newt carries on and looks very presidential. The evangelicals and tea party folks are rallying behind Gingrich. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NEWT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bachmann had her shot. Perry his. Cain his.
No one's going for Huntsman, Paul or Santorum. And three quarters are looking for the non-Romney.
That leaves Newt.
If Perry had been half the debater of Newt, he'd be it, but this was not a race he was prepared for nor seemed keen on.
And I am sure you are for Freedom of Speech.
Although it is difficult to tell...
"Stop saying youre Tea Party when you are going to vote for Gingrich because youre not."
“Maybe that’s the plan. The GOP elite hate the Tea Party.”
And, Newt betrayed the TP in 2009. My hunch is he’ll do it again.
Bookmarked! Thanks!
I am willing to forgive those transgressions, but do we really need another one-worlder, even if he is a free one-worlder as opposed to a progressive one-worlder?
The next POTUS has to be concerned with the good of The United States of America FIRST, regardless of the needs/wants of the rest of the world!
You may be right. But Palin has all been but invisible. As for Tea Partiers backing Newty—that’s pure hogwash. If anything Tea Partiers are wondering how this whole travesty of a Pubbie Rino/Conservative primary plays out.
I don’t think any rational Tea Party Conservative is under any illusions about Newty. One thing he’s not these days is a conservative. I don’t see the RINO-led, demrat-controlled GOP allowing a real conservative to run on its ticket.
Maybe you haven’t seen the debates but Santorum is a big gov’t guy in the mold of W.
But Newt has very little to do Tea Party ideals other than his early years and Balance Budget measure.....he is a Washington insider
Newt was the primary motivator in developing the Contract with America for the 1994 election. He made a legitimate effor to enact each portion of that contract. Yes, due to the lack of Senate commitment and veto's by Clinton, much of the contract was not passed or negotiated down. But, the segment of government that he led, the house, was tried and true committed to execution of that contract.
Dust off that contract and post it on the wall. Doesn't it accurately represent what the Tea Party is all about?
I would have to hold my nose to vote for Newt, much like I did when I voted for McCain.
Me too, but I would do it. But if Romney is the candidate? No I can’t do that. I would probably be left with a third party or write-in vote for Palin.
Why you might ask? As far as I am concerned Romney is just Obama light or maybe even exactly the same. They both have voted for the same things. At least Obama is consistent in his destructive ways. Romney flip-flops faster than an oscillator
This item is based on polling data - you would be better off to aim your emotional meltdown at the poll.
Geees I wish Palin was running (she should have retained her governorship...it would have helped her now)
come April when NY has its primaries...some one or another has usually been picked already and my vote is useless...
I could live with Newt more than Romney or Huntsman or Paul.....
I do not see Bachmann or Santorum coming close....though it is early
but nobody out there is A-#1 in my book.
