Rick Perry Says Human Rights for Gays ‘Not in America’s Interests’
ABC ^ | December 6, 2011 | Arlette Saenz

Posted on 12/06/2011 1:41:04 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Texas Gov. Rick Perry said today that using foreign aid to combat human rights abuses against homosexuals in foreign countries is “not in America’s interests” and attacked President Obama’s decision to require U.S. agencies operating abroad to promote equal rights for gays as part of the administration’s “war on traditional American values.”

“Just when you thought Barack Obama couldn’t get any more out of touch with America’s values, AP reports his administration wants to make foreign aid decisions based on gay rights. This administration’s war on traditional American values must stop,” Perry said in the statement. “Promoting special rights for gays in foreign countries is not in America’s interests and not worth a dime of taxpayers’ money.”

Perry moved beyond the national security implications of the decision and honed in on what he deemed to be an attack on “traditional American values.”

“But there is a troubling trend here beyond the national security nonsense inherent in this silly idea,” he said. “This is just the most recent example of an administration at war with people of faith in this country. Investing tax dollars promoting a lifestyle many [Americans] of faith find so deeply objectionable is wrong. President Obama has again mistaken America’s tolerance for different lifestyles with an endorsement of those lifestyles. I will not make that mistake.”

I think you already pulled the other one, my FRiend. As I’m sure that you know, Texas state colleges, like every other state’s colleges, charges tuition. If you want to make the claim that the difference between the in-state tuition rate and out-of-state tuition rate is being paid for by Texas taxpayers then you’d be wrong. Texas would lose money if they were to charge the out-of-state rate in that scenario: economics 101, charge more for a product or service and consumers will find a cheaper alternative; in this case, they would establish residency in another state that offered in-state tuition rates. Not only would Texas be out the in-state tuition charge, they’d also collect less sales tax and property tax revenue.

>> If you are such an advocate for such regime

Never stated nor implied such advocacy, but the issue seems to be on your mind. Perry’s stated position on foreign aid beings with $0 obligation which would defund any hypothetical brutality kitty.

The first paragraph in the last link is all you need to see to know that the author is clueless: "Texas Governor Rick Perry defended his policy of allowing illegal immigrants to obtain in-state tuition for Texas state colleges in the Fox News/Google debate September 22."

It's not the governor's policy, it's state law. Surely you're not basing your views on this poorly written and factually wrong article?

Do you personally believe that the US should not decrease foreign aid to nations that violently crack down on gay rights rallies or kill those who the state perceives to by gay?

Apparently Gov. Perry's remarks flew over your head. Obama is pandering to identity groups and signaling that the U.S. finds (most likely just a campaign talking point to Barack) gay rights to be a baseline of our foreign policy. It's an outrageous position and Perry called him on it.

It seems that the current administration is threatening to decrease aid to nations who persecute persons who are perceived by the state authorities to be gay or lesbian.

Gov. Perry earlier stated that foreign aid to all nations should begin at zero and then be apportioned according to US specified benchmarks each nation meets.

However, now Perry is saying that regimes who persecute those who are perceived to be gay or lesbian should not have any of their aid from the US cut due to their imprisoning or executing of those who are perceived by state authorities to be gay or lesbian.

It is now unclear of where Perry actually stands.

If Perry wants to cut off all foreign aid, why is he troubled by a move to reduce foreign aid to nations that persecute those who are perceived to be gays and lesbians?

On Perry's point here, I can agree. Odd, though, that Obama has chosen to support a lifestyle that is so against his mother religion - Islam. I believe this goes to show that a Muslim is absolved of all heresy if it is committed in execution of Allah's true goal - subjugation of the world. We have no reason (interest) is supporting a lifestyle (LGBT) that is self-defeating.

You can try to add your spin to his statement, but it is what it is and you can't twist it.

You know where you stand with Gov. Perry.

And as you’ve noted, not with Obama.

Please clarify.

Does Perry want to cut aid to these nations or does he want to continue to send billions of dollars in aid to nations that persecute citizens who are perceived to be gay of lesbian?

Idiot. It passed nearly unanimously! Do you even understand what that means? It also passed two terms ago and the people of Texas have not seen fit to change leadership! So deal with it!

PA’s objection was to what the Texas legislature did which PA erroneously tried to pin on the Governor. The Texas legislature is not auditioning for President.

Let's say Texas charged out-of-state tuition to illegals. How is that any better? Aren't they still illegal? Why allow an illegal to attend college at all? Like you said, they're "criminals."

Because we can't deport them? OK, fine.

Next question, if we can't deport them, should we allow them to be resident students as opposed to non-residents? Because they live here and pay state taxes, unlike people living in other states?

The idiotic thing about this debate is Newt wants to grant ALL of them amnesty but Perry gets ridiculed over tuition rates and Newt is leading the polls.

I thought for sure that Newt would decline in popularity after those amnesty remarks in the last debate. Clearly, this election is about perceived "capability" among republican voters and not much else. You can tell the people want someone with smarts and good speaking ability. Issues don't really amount to squat this time around.

The Democrats like the idea of a gray-haired, GOP established white guy running against Obama.

After all, it worked so well in 2008.

Sad to see how many people's eyes are glued shut and it's mostly due to emotional attachments to former candidates or potential candidates.

All but 4 Texans signed the bill. Laws are, or should be, reflections of the will of the constituency. And in this particular case, all but 4 of 181 legislators voted for HB 1403 in 2001. If you’re a proponent of states rights then you have to respect the laws of other states even when you vehemently disagree with them.
