Georgia Gun Owners Blast Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrich’s record disturbing to home state gun owners

Georgia gun owners long aware of Newt’s anti-gun record

Kennesaw, GA – The 6,000 members and supporters of the premier grassroots gun rights group in Georgia, Georgia Gun Owners, began buzzing the phone lines of the Newt 2012 Iowa campaign headquarters (515-468-9225) demanding Mr. Gingrich apologize to gun owners for his more than two-decade history of supporting gun control.

“Georgia Gun Owners knows Newt’s history of gun control. He represented parts of our state for 20 years. He’s been playing both sides of the gun issue as long as we can remember.

Take a look at the Marietta (GA) Daily Journal from September 16, 1996. The headline is ‘Gingrich supports gun ban.’ I remember Newt’s betrayal of gun owners back in the 90s like it was yesterday,” said D.R. Leonard, Political Director of Georgia Gun Owners.

While Newt used the institutional gun lobby as a mouthpiece to convince millions of gun owners nationwide that “as long as he is Speaker, no gun-control legislation is going to move in committee or on the House floor,” he was working behind the scenes to pass gun control. In 1996, Newt Gingrich turned his back on gun owners and voted for the anti-gun Brady Campaign’s Lautenberg Gun Ban, which strips the Second Amendment rights of citizens involved in misdemeanor domestic violence charges or temporary protection orders — in some cases for actions as minor as spanking a child.

Gingrich also stood shoulder to shoulder with Nancy Pelosi to pass the “Criminal Safezones Act” which prevents armed citizens from defending themselves in certain arbitrary locations. Virtually all Americans know that Criminal Safezones don’t protect law-abiding citizens, but actually protect the criminals who ignore them. “But the biggest knife that Newt plunged into the back of all Americans and gun owners who wish to defend themselves and their families, was his coming out in support of a national thumbprint database for gun owners,” said Mr. Leonard.

“I think we prefer to go to instant check on an immediate basis and try to accelerate implementing instant checks so that you could literally check by thumbprint… Instant check is a much better system than the Brady process.” — Newt Gingrich, June 27, 1997 “Newt Gingrich is no friend of gun owners. I wish Georgia Gun Owners had a mountaintop to scream this information from. We just want like-minded voters in early primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to be aware of this.

Newt is trying really hard to play both sides of the Second Amendment. He’s a professional politician. But as the old saying goes, the proof is in the pudding. It’s in his record. His own words and votes. He’s a danger to our Second Amendment rights and privacy. The members of Georgia Gun Owners know this. We want ALL Americans to know this as well,” said Mr. Leonard, Political Director of Georgia Gun Owners.

"We" can do nothing. Say you and me and and every person posting to this thread got together and decided to "do" something about it.

We would then do...What?

It would take the people who own the news agencies and the people who decide what goes on TV at 6 o'clock each night to change their views...Not happening.

When are American citizens going to get a clue - the ‘elites’ play us for our votes and then play their influence for more power & money...

They're POLLITICIANS. That's what they do.

We need Statesmen to represent us in our Republic.

Newt talks a good game when he isn’t wandering off into the World Of Oz but at heart he is a Big Government guy.

He just doesn’t walk the talk.

If you look at his history and the details of his proposals he generally sides with government control or government “solutions” even while he preaches smaller government and free markets.

His solution to unemployment compensation? A government program to train the unemployed.

His solution to the illegal alien mess? A government program to legalize illegals, complete with another bureaucracy with committees to decide who gets Shamnesty and who doesn’t.

:: Now we are told to vote for Newt or Mitt Romney wins Primary, only to lose to Obi in Presidential election. ::

Although on the narrow topic, I don’t think Obamugabe will use this against Newt in the general.

We are letting the MSM set up the GOP candidate.

Newt and Mitt are both very flawed men, who will have a hard time winning. Which is the design. A Bachman or Paul would not follow the agenda.

About the only thing I can find on Bachman in the GOA site relates to voting against raising the debt limit and other bills not focused on guns.

I wonder what they base her rating on?

We have every opportunity to pick a total package in Bachmann and she is ignored because she fights back against the “men”.

No, she is ignored because, despite a very strong start, she has succeeded in proving that she is, in fact, as stupid as the left wants us to believe.

“Lets look at the named contenders agains Mitt and see their grade at getting elected.”

Huh??

If getting elected is what you are rating, none you mention comes close to Rick Perry, he has never lost one.

Well, Newt’s weak on guns, but not horrible. Let’s review the pack:

Ron Paul...............A+ - and a lunatic who’d get us nuked

Rick Perry.............A - and can’t string two sentences together and would be annihilated against Obama

Michelle Bachmann......A - and is about as crazy as the left says she is

Rick Santorum..........B- - good record in Senate, but weak, milquetoast, boring, lost last election by 18 pts, percieved as a Bible-thumper, wouldn’t fight back against Obama and would lose

Newt Gingrich..........C - personal life is shambles, but balanced 4 budgets and knows how to hit back, probably has the best overall record, and might be able to use his notoriety to actually smack down Obama pretty hard

Mitt Romney............D- - weak record as governor, boring

Newt probably wins this contest by default, which is sad, really.

Are you kidding? She is the smartest one on the stage. She is an expert at Foreign policy, tax law, and very many other subjects. I would hardly call her stupid. Now for stupid there is Perry, Huntsman, Romney, and Paul. Newt is a big idea guy that won’t get anything implemented because he is hated so much. Just watch. If he becomes president, there will be more complaining on FR about President Newt than anybody else in history.

There are portions of your post that is spot on. I am still thinking that Bachmann is given a rotten time. If conservatives would back her, she could win. After Newt, she would hit Obama HARD.

OK, I apologize. She’s smart.

I meant to say that the way she comes across makes her appear unintelligent, and crazy. Like the Gardasil comments.

You're just supposed to get behind their candidate-of-choice and STFU.

So true. No independent analysis or opinion allowed around here lately.

Maybe I'll start a catalog of all the evidence that Newt does NOT have a record of conservatism. It would be a rather large volume.

But the sheep have made their decision (for this week anyway), and the rest of us are branded as wolves.

Cool. I just want to see her destroy Obama. Sure she might say some off the wall things but so does Obama. She would twist him up so much that he wouldn’t know which way is up.

I agree that we need to press the issue about this problem with Gingrich, and I do remember what he did back in the 90’s with the AWB...

So I might as well throw this out there and see what the concensus is...

What “if” Newt came out and reversed his position and stated he is Pro-Second Amendment, totally anti-gun control, desires to reverse some gun-control regulations/rules/laws, and enforce the SCOTUS’s Heller decision???

I am in no way endorsing or supporting Newt at this time, I want to see if any of the single issue FReepers out there have any thoughts if he did this...

Because as much as people want to raise this up as a real issue to NOT support Newt for the nomination, I would summize it might be in good standing to point out the more horrible track record of the Republican Party Leaderships’ boy Mitt Romney in this case...Maybe we need to send a message to them to stop forcing an obvious hazard to our Second amendment rights on us...

I would be more concerned about that than Newt at this time...

Just my opinion...

I like Rick Perry:

“There are already guns on campus. All too often they are illegal,” Republican Gov. Rick Perry said. “I want there to be legal guns on campus”

I don't disagree with what you say, However, we TRUSTED the old Newt, and he fed us a shit-sandwich. So we trust him again?

Romney has always been anti-RKBA. Not so Mr. Newt. Yet, he went from "A" in 1994 to "D" a year later as GOA has stated. So what happened to make him change his pos so damned quickly?

You would be WRONG. Conservatives and conservative leaning independents will crawl to the polls if they have to, to vote out Obama the disaster.
