Yes, the Gauntlet. That’s one of his best roles, when Gus Malley (Sondra Locke) is taunting him and he goes nuts. The ONLY role I thought Locke was good in, BTW.

I read an interview that Billy Redden did where he said he didn’t play banjo well enough so they had another person reach from behind to do the chords and any of the complex picking.

The odds of Appalachin hillbillies being homosexuals is about as remote as possible here
The most undeserved stereotype ever...and one yankees adore to preen over
More queers in Burlington Vermont than in all of southern Appalachia
Baring Asheville....the dyke capital of America...but they are all from somewhere else

The Deliverance banjo kid was Robin Williams? I could have sworn it was Sean Penn.

Yea, I hate the fact that Deliverance is the role most people will talk about. I just saw the other day about a movie part he had lost out on in early 70’s because the director feared people would remember him from Deliverance.

Spent last week in Townsend TN. Lots of real nice folks there and everyone I met had all their teeth. Stereotypes for the area seem undeserved.

Urban yankees hate rural Southern folk. Bottom line.
Went to Asheville NC to gauge weapons for a local reserve unit deploying to Iraq. What I saw downtown was unbelievable and what made it strange in addition to the freaky street people was the abundance of head shops, funky art galleries, and restaurants featuring anything but European food. Like Haight-Ashbury 1967.
The unit first sergeant was an Asheville native. When I told him what I saw off duty he said, “This used to be a decent place to live.”

More queers in Burlington Vermont than in all of southern Appalachia... I'd say there are more sodomites in just about any town in New England than there are in all of southern Appalachia. New England is the 'gay marriage capitol of America', after all... :-(

Yep. The American Legion used to run a square dance in Mountain City, GA, at the "Mountain City Playhouse" up until the early 1990's. It was THE thing to do on Saturday nights in the summertime and would draw locals and folks who had cabins on nearby Lake Burton, Seed and Rabun. When I was a kid we always went to Mountain City and I used to see the banjo guy from Deliverance pretty much every Saturday. Lots of folks out of the Foxfire book series were usually there, too.
