RAMESH PONNURU
DECEMBER 2, 2011 Romneys the One
Even though nobody has yet cast a vote in the primaries, Republicans are increasingly resigned to Gov. Mitt Romneys winning the partys presidential nomination. Every week he gets a few more endorsements from Republican officeholders. He has never had a commanding lead in the polls, but one by one the other candidates who have occupied the top tier with him first Rep. Michele Bachmann, then Gov. Rick Perry, then Herman Cain have fallen back out of it. The current surge for Newt Gingrich looks like one last fling before Republicans settle down with Romney.
Republicans should not be gloomy about this prospect. Romney isnt merely the candidate who is likely to win the Republican primaries. Hes the candidate who should win them. Thats why hes likely to win.
We all know the knocks on Romney. His health-care plan in Massachusetts was Obamacare in one state. Hes a flip-flopper. Inauthentic. His conservative detractors say hes the establishment/moderate candidate or worse. (Actual Thanksgiving conversation in the Ponnuru home: Conservative brother-in-law: So, which of these characters are you supporting? Me: I think Romneys the best of the bunch. Him: I didnt know you were a Democrat.)
Its true that Romney took a sharp right turn when he moved from state to national politics. But its also true that in 2008 he was the candidate behind whom Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin, among other conservative notables, said that the conservative movement should rally in order to stop John McCain from getting the nomination.

I have come to expect such from NR.
More accurately, Romney is "The Won".
No measurable difference between him and Baraq in most important respects.
At this point, here is how I stack them (my choice, not who would win the primary, general, etc.)
1. Perry
2. Cain
3. Bachmann (I know, no chance)
4. Santorum (I know, no chance)
5. Romney
6. Gingrich (has flipped flopped as much or more as Romney, and I cannot stand his family/moral values — that stated, I would still vote for him in the general over The One)
7. Huntsman
8. Paul
Why should I care who endorses mit?
He is obama light, nothing more.
We are selling ourselves short in and election anyone could win, running against Zero.
A lot of people on here did as well... What isn’t mentioned is that at one point late in the 2008 primary season Romney has considered the last, best hope for beating McCain. The support by conservatives for Romney was more strategic than any real desire to see him win. However, it’s now a different story. Romney is the “McCain” of 2012 (except hopefully he loses the primary)...
The choices in 2008 were:
1. Mike Huckabee
2. Mitt Romney
3. John McCain
I see little difference between Huckabee and Romney, but both were far superior to McCain.
Ramesh makes a false point.
“...... one last fling before Republicans settle down with Romney.”
“Fling”? LOL
Just one of many examples of the “ last fling”.
“Results from an American Research Group poll of likely GOP primary voters in Florida: Newt Gingrich (50 percent), Mitt Romney (19 percent), Herman Cain (10 percent), Jon Huntsman (3 percent), Rick Perry and Ron Paul (2 percent), Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, and Buddy Roemer (1 percent).”

I agree. I supported Romney over McCain in 2008 for that very reason. Heck, I would have preferred Hillary to Obama!
Poor Michele Backmann, didn't even make the list. :)
The GOP has given us garbage for candidates the last two times.
I will not ever, not EVER cast a vote for Mitt Romney.
Over a McCain, Hillary or Obama... OF COURSE.
But is Mitt our dream of a decent candidate? No friggin way!
Ramesh, you certainly must be aware that there are orders of magnitude more NON-ENDORSEMENTS FROM REPUBLICAN NON-OFFICEHOLDERS than the handful of endorsements that you cited from the pimps of the election industry!

And these idiots wonder why their circulation keeps dropping.
