"...children in poor neighborhoods have "no habits of working," no one around them works and they get cash illegally." Is Newt trying to make the point that they're fully qualified to run for congress?

Guess what, Newton, THERE ARE NO JOBS IN THE HELLHOLES IN WHICH THOSE KIDS LIVE. For that matter, there are no jobs for kids in most cities. The adults have had to take those Mickey Ds jobs and jobs at the hardware store because the economy is so atrocious. There are ALWAYS jobs available for people willing to work, and work cheaply. Ask any illegal Mexican.
Why do illegals get work?
1) They are willing to go where the work is. They are willing to share a room with many other people in order to have a place to sleep near to work.
2) They are willing to work diligently and hard, not mouth off to the boss, and not get into fights with their co-workers.
3) They are willing to forego buying bling, and focus on buying the tools and equipment they need to go into business for themselves.

These poor kids are living in a concrete maze with parents who are children themselves. Ever seen Blind Side? sheesh. what a bunch of self righteous fools. The social programs (ineffectual and foolishly administered) are not what is breaking the economy.
The "social programs" are what enables the "parents who are children themselves" to keep having children. You say it's not breaking the economy. How can you have a healthy economy with a population that doesn't know how to work, and is actively hostile to the idea that they should learn how?

I agree with you. More freedom is the right answer, government jobs is not.

Hes not saying this to say theyre inherently lazy or bad people, hes (correctly) saying that due to the welfare society, fatherlessness, etc...that they dont know anything else. They dont see successful people to look up to. Yes that headline is a typical MSM distortion. I'm not a Gingrich supporter, but it's very disappointing to see Freepers repeating the MSM's calumnies.
And BTW Gingrich is right - there isn't a culture of work in the 'hood.

He didn’t say all poor kids were lazy criminals. I am sure he will have to explain himself at some point, but I believe he is speaking of the underlying culture that has been bred. Obviously some escape, but the vast majority do not.
To: GeronL
most kids - those with more, those with less - do not and will not work.
When the kids are poor this is a bigger problem because the parents do have the means to provide the gadgets and bling that kids want, so guess who they look to?
One size never fits all but he's right.
To: ZX12R
Welfare, food stamps, drug dealing, and theft make them a good living right where they are. It's not a job problem, it's a culture problem. They don't know how to work, they know how to get money, and they're not the same thing.
