If you’ll dig deeper into those numbers, you’ll find many segments are doing fine. Get into a “doing fine” segment. There’s enormous hiring going on in South Dakota and other “flyover country” for the full spectrum of jobs - GO THERE.
“But it’s too hard/expensive/annoying/melancholy to leave home and go to icky South Dakota!” Tough. Move. I did (to GA). If moving is too [insert complaint here], then you must have it pretty good where you are. Nobody’s gonna hand you a cushy high-paying do-nothing job.
