McDonald's will charge for Happy Meal toys in SF

San Francisco -- McDonald's announced today that it would comply with San Francisco's ban on toy giveaways in kids' meals high in fat, salt and sugar by charging customers for the plastic trinkets.

The Heathy Food Incentives Ordinance, which was passed by the Board of Supervisors and withstood a veto by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom last fall, goes into effect Thursday.

Chain restaurants in San Francisco no longer will be able to give away toys with Happy Meals and other children's meals that don't meet the city's strict nutritional standards.

The city drew scrutiny nationwide for passing the ban, with some calling it a good move to combat childhood obesity, while others mocked it as nanny state politics.

"This law is not what my customers wanted or asked for, but the law's the law," said Scott Rodrick, who owns 10 of the 19 McDonald's franchises in the city.

Instead of reducing fat, salt and sugar in children's meals and offering more fruits and vegetables, Rodrick's stores will adhere to the law Thursday by making customers pay an extra 10 cents for a Happy Meal toy. Customers who buy Happy Meals outside San Francisco, including just across the border in Daly City, will continue to get the toy gratis.

Can’t McD’s simply lower the price of the meal to offset the cost of the toy?

McD and the customers win, and the Nanny State loses.

Whoever, within McDonald’s, came up with this solution deserves a bonus, a huge bonus.

It’s not the price.
They aren’t allowed to give it away or include it in the price of the meal.

But I guess it’s ok to sell it for a dime and use the proceeds for their charity and take the tax deduction, eh?

Hell...charge 1 cent for the toy.
The meals will be just as popular as ever and Big Brother will have his nuts kicked.

We don’t go to McDonalds a lot but we did last week (one of those crazy appointment days where I was running around all day). Long story short, my five year old ordered the happy meal. What a JOKE! I wish I could tell you about the fry container. It looked like a pretend one you would find with a toddler’s play kitchen set. The “apple slices” are “smooshy” and THE DOGS WOULDN’T eat them. We have purchased our last happy meal. I ended up frying some eggs for her since she was obviously still hungry.

Ahhhhhh.

San Franfreakshow.

Where it is ILLEGAL for a child to get a toy with his happy meal, but five seconds later, can be witness to a fully naked man walking down the street with his wang flapping in the breeze.

CA is done, folks.

Actually, I think it depends on the area as to the quality of the food at these place. I've found in our part of Arizona, fast food places are FAR SUPERIOR to those we used to go to in South Florida. The quality simply cannot be compared.

We tend to get faster service and fresher, hot food almost uniformly from different brand names. In SoFlo, it was the opposite.

Big difference with the region and the people, IMHO.

I think my daughter got the new “Michelle Obama friendly” happy meal. I wish I counted the number of fries. I would estimate 10. The apple slices comprised of a little more than 1/4 an apple. (definitely not HALF an apple). It was an absolute joke.

From a different article: “In any event, it appears the fast food chain's sharpie lawyers have McTopped San Francisco's legislators. Count this city's lawmakers as the latest among the billions and billions served.”

Lawyers being smarter than liberal legislators....that bar isn't set very high.

“San Francisco’s ban on toy giveaways in kids’ meals high in fat, salt and sugar by charging customers for the plastic trinkets.”

A primary tenet of a fascist state is control of private property for the common good, as defined by the state.

The Nazi flag should be raised in front of city hall.
