Gingrich Leads; Romney at New Low in Positive Intensity (Even Core Mitt Backers Now Wary)
Gallup ^ | 11-29-2011 | Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- Newt Gingrich's most recent Positive Intensity Score of 20 in Gallup tracking conducted Nov. 14-27 is the highest of any Republican candidate, while Mitt Romney's current score of 9 is his lowest of the year by one percentage point.

Gingrich and Romney are essentially tied as the front-runners on Gallup's latest trial-heat ballot measure, but their Positive Intensity Scores this year have followed substantially different patterns.

Romney's highest Positive Intensity Score this year is 20, measured in March, but he has been at or below 16 since late July. Romney's score of 9 for the two-week period of Nov. 14-27 is his lowest of the year.

The trajectory of Gingrich's Positive Intensity Score has shown a substantial drop and then an equally substantial rise over the course of the year. Gingrich's score was 19 in March, but by summer it had plummeted to 1. The former speaker's score then began an upward track, and has now reached 20 for two weeks in a row. This is Gingrich's highest score of the year, is currently higher than the score of any other candidate by an 11-point margin, and leaves Gingrich as the only candidate with a double-digit score.

Still, for the first time since early May, the highest Positive Intensity Score over the last three weeks has been 20. This suggests that Gingrich leads in an environment in which Republicans are relatively unenthusiastic about any of the candidates running for their party's nomination.......

Looks like Mitt is having trouble with even some of his loyal supporters now.

In 2008 I didn't know Romney from adam, and could never warm up to the guy. He just doesn't sit right. I subsequently learned of his record, and tendency to pander to whoever was voting in the next election. I can see why his "intensity" level is at an anemic low. Nothing there to connect with.

“Looks like Mitt is having trouble with even some of his loyal supporters now.”

That is a good thing. Karl Rove and Hugh Hewitt are deeply saddened.

If 20% is the maximum a candidate is getting in a poll mere weeks away from a critical election, we’re in deep trouble.

How does one go about petitioning these early states to delay and allow other candidates into the process? The painful truth is that no one in the current GOP field is giving the electorate any confidence.

When will O’Reilly start calling for Flip Romney to drop out?

If Newt get the nomination, it will be the of conservative movement.

Newt represents everything that is wrong with Beltway rinos:
- amnesty
- global warming
- gun grabbing
- individual mandate in obamacare
- conservative bashing “radical right-wing social engineering”
- serial adultery
- mismanaged congress

This from GOP nominee? You got to be kidding me.

But hey, he has nice voice and his latest wife is great.

I haven’t seen any other potentially significant candidates make the slightest hint about running. Unless you include Trump’s little play. If someone else wanted to run, they should have done so. They didn’t, so we’ll have to fight with the army we brought.

The republican party is equally fueled with animosity for each of the front runners and will maybe succeed in chewing both of them up. The primary focus of this election should be to eliminate Obama, no matter what. But, if our nominee is damaged enough in the primaries, that may not happen.

Romney has the business sense that might allow him to succeed in getting us back to work in a hurry and back on track to becoming the stabilizing force in the world, as we should be. That might be a more serious goal than smoothing over all the conflicts and troubles that persist around the globe.

Newt is smart and has a lot of clever ideas that continually push the envelope. I heard David Drier say he has about 1,000 new ideas a day. I don't know if he would make a good leader or not. But, it sounds like he has trouble focusing ...maybe a taste of A.D.D.? He isn't afraid to think and talk out of the box. I loved his comment about letting Obama use a teleprompter if he'll agree to a debate.

Rick Perry has the best domestic ideas I've heard with respect to deecee reforms. But, he is prone to gaffs, is conservative and from Texas and that's enough for the media to relentlessly take him apart.

It looks like Cain is too tarnished by accusations, true or not, to get back on top. He probably couldn't measure up on foreign policy and climate issues anyway. He's not as smooth as Obama in making an ambiguous answer sound like something brilliant.

The rest of the field is one lap down and probably can't get back into the race.

I am struck by the GOP fickleness. First they love Bachmann; then they turn their backs on her. Then they love Rick Perry; then crap all over him (he deserved it). Then they switch to Cain and swoon and swear allegiance; then they turn on him. Now they’re in love with Newt. We’ll see what happens.

Here in CA, the “conservative” GOP just HAD to have Arnold Schwartzenkennedy and they just could not get enough of kissing his rings. (I supported McClintock!) Anyway, just look at the mess we have in CA!! And we’re stuck with Gov “Moonbeam” now. Let me outta here!

At least Romney has been consistent - “steady Eddie”!

Romney: better than Obama or suicide, barely. Newt: maybe preferable to Romney... or maybe a walking time bomb.

If 20% is the maximum a candidate is getting in a poll mere weeks away from a critical election, we’re in deep trouble.

Gallup computes Positive Intensity Scores by subtracting the percentage of Republicans with highly unfavorable views of each candidate from the percentage with highly favorable views, based on those who say they have heard of the candidate.

Being opposed to adultery and generally scumbagginess, the grounds on which many opposed Bill Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, is now considered “circular firing squad territory” here on FR? Does this mean Bill Clinton retroactively is now a really cool guy? Or is he still a cheating, untrustworthy creep? Cuz I put all three of them in that exact same category.

No matter how many times you say things like “gun grabber” and “amnesty,” it is not true.

Mismanaged Congress? Are you kidding me? Do you have any concept of the Conservative legislation he passed? Please.

And the individual mandate thing is getting tiresome. Saying that if everyone gets health care, everyone should pay for health care, is different from what Mitt and Obama have done. Mitt and Obama said “get health care or be in violation of the law.” Newt fought Hillarycare to its demise. All he said was that if everyone does wind up getting health care, everyone should pay for their health care.
