..The Texas governor has faced criticism from Republican rivals like Mitt Romney for being "soft" on illegal immigrants, because those who live in Texas can attend state universities at the same cost as other Texas residents.
Perry, who made the remarks while campaigning in New Hampshire with a controversial Arizona sheriff, said that if elected he would immediately order the deportation of any illegal immigrant detained in the United States.
"My policy will be to detain and deport every illegal alien who is apprehended in this country," Perry said. "And we'll do it with an expedited hearing process so that millions of illegal aliens are not released into the general population with some hearing date down the road."
Non-violent illegal immigrants who are arrested are currently allowed to stay in the country while awaiting deportation hearings in immigration courts.
Perry was briefly among the front-runners for the Republican primary nomination after entering the race in August, but has been hit by attacks on his immigration views and stumbled in a series of poor debate performances.
Recent polls show Perry running in fourth or fifth place among Republicans nationally, and about sixth in the relatively moderate state of New Hampshire.
But ongoing problems with sexual misconduct accusations against rival Republican Herman Cain could arguably encourage some conservative voters to take a second look at Perry.
Perry's endorsement by Joe Arpaio, who claims to be "America's toughest sheriff," was designed to rebut criticism of his immigration policies.
Arpaio has drawn national attention for creating all-volunteer armed posses to sweep for illegal immigrants in Arizona's Maricopa County..

CW: Here he is saying what we want him to say, promising to do what we want him to do, and there are still skeptics. You can’t really blame them, can you?
I guess it’s is his fault for waiting so long. The way I see it, it’s like `No new taxes!’ and Bush the elder. Our promise to him, Break your word and you’re fired. He broke his word.
The guv can’t be this stiff and as big a spaz in front of family and friends as he is in front of voters. Why can’t he just loosen up? (without sounding hammered)
Well, at least he’s saying the right things now and he’s got Joe behind him, and that’s saying a lot. Politics is a lot like `football time’ (as my wife complains): a lot can happen in a football minute.
Try some facts for a change...
The governor of any state cannot deport anyone, cannot detain anyone, only the Feds...
There is a long list of his actions on things he can do. It has been posted many times.
If he could deport, which he cannot, the children of illegal immigrants are not detainable. They were brought here by their parents when the parents entered.
The statement was that he would deport all that are being detained now, if he becomes President, which is a reversal of Obama’s policy to deport only those who have committed crimes...other crimes than entering illegally.
The fact is that the children of illegals must show that they have attended a tx high school for 3 years and graduated, to be considered for in state tuition.
Whereas a citizen from another state can move to tx, establish residency for a year, and get in state tuition.
A few facts, yep, try it.
I hope Perry self deports to Mexico.
I hope democrats, illegals and other who are for the illegals’ invasion of America also self deport.
I hope anyone that is for the invasion of China products into the U.S., ditto..
Gov. Perry is serious about border security and stopping illegals.
He’s put $400 Million of our Texas state dollars on an INTERNATIONAL border that the federal government refuses to secure. He is a border governor who has had to deal with those federal laws regarding educating illegals and giving them health care and paying to keep them in jail — the costs, the crime, all the problems allowed to explode due to non-action by the federal government.
Rick Perry is the only one running who has dealt with this, fought the abuse of inaction and consistently worked to seal the border.
Perry supports states efforts to combat the flood of illegals but he also knows how the courts immediately shut down any efforts and how it costs states millions in legal costs to fight the very government that is charged by the Constitution to protect and defend our borders.
As president Rick Perry WILL seal the border. As a governor, his hands are tied.
Because if E-verify is anything like the *no-fly list (government run) it will likely be use against us.
This is why no one is in favor fo a national ID.
What good is deporting illegals when they will be back ASAP?
Any deportee found in this country should be given a year of HARD labor to pay for the cost of finding them.
Yep...Absolute bogus bull cheet.
Bush redux...
Let me offer a few “Facts”.
As a sitting Governor, he can lead in enacting state immigration laws like Alabama.
If he is so serious, why isn’t he helping to enact state laws like Alabama.
Ho bout dat fact? What’s your excuse for him on him?

Support your candidate but don't lie about Perry. He has always supported strategic fencing in urban areas.
Texas just enacted Voter ID and proof of citizenship to receive a Texas DL.
IIRC, (along with nearly every illegal immigration law passed by any state) these are under federal review.
If Perry says [as President] he will detain and deport, he will do it.
Sure am glad Perry is for strategic fencing.
Understanding what a fence can and can’t do in various situations, and maximizing the exact other assets that will actually secure the border.
Understanding the massive attempted land grab and water rights issues, and another country being along the fence line that has rights whether WE like it or not.
I’ll take his credentials as the ten year governor of the state with the longest, most difficult border, over any.
What’s holding him back in enacting immigration laws like Alabama? As Governor, he has that power to lead and sign.
Is something wrong with his arm, where he can’t lead and sign a bill like Alabama’s NOW?
All you get is tied up in the courts and it costs the state taxpayers millions. Once a border governor like Perry, who WANTS the border sealed and illegal immigration STOPPED sits in the White House, this will FINALLY happen.
After almost 12 years in office...Just in time for Perry's campaign!
Barf...
Will Perry deport them before tax payers pay for their education, or after?
During a campaign the air is full of speeches - and vice versa.
You know how cute you are twisting the facts and tossing out apples and calling them oranges? Not very.
The border is sealed. The country decides what workers are necessary, how to give work permits, who applies for citizenship and where they get in line. But with the border sealed the flood of illegals coming in stops — and there will most likely be a flood going out.
Alabama law, as of today, is still standing.
So what’s holding Perry back now? Your excuse for Perry’s inaction is very weak.
Pass the law, let the courts sort it out.
