WILMINGTON, N.C. A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked North Carolina from issuing special anti-abortion license plates.
The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union suing to prevent people from paying for the "Choose Life" plates, alleging that they violate the First Amendment because there's no specialty plate for supporters of abortion rights.
U.S. District Judge James Fox issued a temporary injunction to stop the Division of Motor Vehicles from issuing the plates until the suit could be heard.
"This case is ultimately about free speech and equal treatment for all North Carolinians, regardless of their point of view on abortion," Katy Parker, legal director for the ACLU's North Carolina Legal Foundation, said in a statement. "The state should not be allowed to use its authority to promote one side of a debate while denying the same opportunity to the other side."
Twenty-nine states either already make "Choose Life" plates available or have approved such plates but have not manufactured them.
But the plates have a mixed record when it comes to court challenges, with some judges ruling states can sell them and others siding with challengers who say the plates are unconstitutional.

So then make a murder babies plate then, you dipsh!ts.
Okay, then the state should also offer "Choose Abortion" plates--betcha they don't sell one of them.
A mixed record? Where exactly have the pro-death forces prevailed on this?
JEEEEZ! Even we in the People’s Republic of Maryland have a “choose life” plate.
You’d think “Choose Life” is SOOO offensive...
Well, actually, it IS offensive...
to the consciences of those who have chosen otherwise.
I’d conjecture that 90% of those who are “pro-choice”, and 99% of those that are vehemently so,
have participated in aborting a child at some point in their lives and don’t want any reminders that they’ve helped murder a baby.
...either take away their jurisdiction or defund them or limit their terms.
There’s no speciality plate for the KKK, so why isn’t my Knights of Columbus plate unconstitutional?
The problem with this judge is that the phrase “Choose Life” is ambiguous. It’s not “pro” or “anti” anything.
He should get a major smack down.
NC has become South NJ, I wonder if he would approve Choose Jihad.
Amazing. There’s not one logical explanation why you’d be against a “Choose Life” plate.
Great logic.
‘Choose Death’ is clearly the other option.
What idiots these judges be;)
For some reason, “Choose Death” didn’t sell well.
Err,because the courts are rigged in their favor?
What if the plate read: Chose life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
What then would this stupid idiot judge decide?
Hard to tell which branch of government is the most dangerous and harmful.
the “Choose Life” plates, alleging that they violate the First Amendment because there’s no specialty plate for supporters of abortion rights.
