Cain Wants Illegal Immigration Issue Shifted to States
The Corner / The National Review ^ | 11-27-2011 | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 11/27/2011 6:51:43 PM PST by TitansAFC

Herman Cain indicated today that he does not agree with Newt Gingrich’s position on immigration.

“The way I would deal with those that are already here, which has been my stated position: empower the states to deal with the illegals that are already here, not some, big, grandiose, national one size fit-all. I believe that the states should be empowered to deal with the illegals that are already here,” Cain said CNN’s State of the Union this morning.

In response to whether that meant the states could allow illegal immigrants to “be put on a path toward legalization and toward citizenship,” Cain answered, “It would be up to the states as long as they did not break the federal law.”

But when Crowley used the word “amnesty,” inquiring if that it meant it would be “okay” if the states granted “some sort of amnesty to those who are already living here,” Cain vehemently denied he supported amnesty.

“I’m not saying that at all,” he said

“Secure the border for real,” Cain continued, speaking about what his plan regarding illegal immigrants is. “Promote the path to citizenship that’s already there, and the path to citizenship that’s already there doesn’t say anything about amnesty. Thirdly, enforce the laws that are already there, but make it easier for companies to be able to enforce the laws. And fourth, empower the states. Don’t give the states any special things to do, just empower them to do within the law what the federal government is not doing.”

Well, if the Cainsterical bunch are going to now contend that immigration is a state’s rights issue - or if, as you say, the Feds aren’t doing anything any time soon - why hold an immigration positional against anyone running for a federal office? It’s “not like the Fed Gov is going to step up to the plate sometime soon” right?

You are partially right (although we are well beyond our share of uneducated, unskilled laborers).

We are not in as bad a shape as Europe, but we are headed in that direction. One thing, I will give them is Mexicans are not as bad as Muzzies, though over the past 40 years we have been emigrating our share of Muzzies too.

Cain has no clue what the powers of the presidency are.

**************
On the other hand, perhaps he is well aware of the power. And his method of enforcement- as opposed to the current administration- is to empower the states to enforce federal immigration law consistent with his articulated position that people should not be in the country illegally. .

Nice try, he said it was up to the states to enforce the laws, something the Feds aren’t doing. Quit taking stuff out of context. Who is your candidate, obozo?

So, the Federal Government has abdicated one of its enumerated powers of national defense. Cain says he’s in favor of the States taking steps to deal with the problem.

I take it you’re against Arizona’s SB1070 and Alabama’s law also?

Or did you really think the Fed Gov is going to step up to the plate sometime soon?

Or did you think Rick Perry or Newt Gingrich will take up the task if elected?

That’s like saying the Titans are going to win the AFC when they can’t even win their division.

Yes, I know Perry would step up to the plate. Perry has been on this for years with NO help from the federal government.

I really do not think that Newt or anyone else running would step as strongly.

As much as I would like the words to be taken literally I fear that that the word “invasion” would be corrupted in the same manner by the same people as “natural born citizen”.

If Cain’s serious, this is going to hurt him and I’d be badly disappointed. It’s almost like Perry with his checkered background looks better. Perrywinkles may yet prevail, if for the wrong reasons.

It is the constitutionally spelled out duty of the Federal government to defend the states from invasion. Maybe Cain would want to allow a state to not complain about illegale “invasion” and for the Federal government to look the other way, but really, all a state needs to do is complain (it need not even bother to try to mount its own defense) and the constitutional onus is on Uncle Sam. Also, there aren’t any walls between states. Jose can saunter into Texas from Mexico and from there go to any of the other lower 48 without anyone asking so much as a by your leave. Texas might not care, but how about Utah? Or Oklahoma? Don’t they have a right to complain about what riffraff waltzed into Texas, even if Texas does not care?

My candidate is the “Buckley Rule” as best as I see it.

My choices would be, in order:

1.) Palin (not running)
2.) Santorum (dead in the water)
3.) Newt/Perry (Buckley Rule winners)
4.) Not Mitt Romney.

"Does this mean it’s ok to deport from state to state?"

That is what Alabama did, and it worked.

If the Federal Government can not or WILL not protect the borders of their own county they should be run off on a rail or worse. It is their main job.

Perhaps you should listen to his words rather than Crowley or the Nationalized review. He said it was up to the states to enforce laws not make them about amnesty. States can’t grant amnesty, but should enforce the laws on the books.

That is what he said 4 times. These gotcha interviews are pathetic.

Pray for America

On the other hand, perhaps he is well aware of the power.

This isn't the first stupid thing he has said. He said he could not sign the pro-life pledge because he didn't think the President has the power to "advance legislation." He then said that the government should not be involved in the decision to abort a child. Now he says that if the federal government won't enforce immigration that he will turn it over to the States, not realizing that it is the president who has the sole power to enforce federal laws.

He is a neophyte of the first order. He is just making this $#I+ up as he goes. He is clueless.

If we could get the border secure ... and we could if we decided to and had the right president ... we could deal with the illegals who are here.

I don’t know exactly what the plan would be but something good could be worked out.
