Yesterday, 11 National Post contributors named their preferred Republican nominee in less than 250 words.
Being more indecisive and longer-winded, I needed 24 extra hours and 500 more words.
Im looking for two chief things in a candidate for 2012:
The temperament, judgment, deftness and largeness of spirit required in the presidential office; and The creativity and intellect to respond to the global economic crisis a crisis threatening to actually get worse if (or when) the euro implodes.
Those conditions obviously and categorically exclude the clownish Herman Cain, the daffy Ron Paul, the dim Rick Perry and the firebrand congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
A step up from those four is former U.S. senator Rick Santorum. Santorum, who is the only candidate in the race to talk about the stagnation of wages and the slowing of upward mobility in the United States. Unfortunately, Santorum a fierce social conservative speaks for too narrow a slice of modern America. Santorum has also never held any administrative responsibility. Its not enough for a president to say do this or do that. Issuing the orders is the easy part. The president must ensure that this and that actually happen. If you have never had such a responsibility before, the White House is a bad place to learn as President Obama (who also lacked any prior administrative experience) proves on a daily basis.

THE MAIN POINT OF THE ARTICLE:
A Gingrich presidency, if such a thing can even be imagined, would be a chaotic catastrophe. A Gingrich nomination would yield an Obama landslide.
So that leaves us with the two governors, Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman. Romney has the better record as an administrator. I still think that his Massachusetts health-care plan showed creative leadership on an important problem even if he himself now declines to defend his own accomplishment.
Romney has spoken well and firmly about the need to stop Irans nuclear weapons program. He has a keen understanding of the debt and financial problems of the U.S. and Europe.
Because the media will have a whole lot of fun with that.
IBTZ!
If you support Obama, just say so plainly. No need to hide behind the Romney cousins.
What would one expect from a Cousin of Paul Krugman.
The neocons are so opportunistic, laughably so. Frum, the man who helped give us the Iraq disaster, now intends to vote for a peacenik without even the hint of irony.
In which case, Dave, I prefer bust:
Actually Huntsman has some good ideas. The global warming nonsense is stupid, but he is better than Romney.
Romney-the-RINO and waffler will NEVER get my vote.
What's Rick Perry? Oh right, Frum simply dismisses him as "dim." Because buying into global warming nonsense like Romney and Huntsman is smart.
vaudine
Huntsman is ok. But to me he is another political insider.
The big question for me is HOW did he get the high-profile Ambassadorship to China?
I’ve calculated, very “scientifically”, that between leftists, government employees, unionized employees, unionized goverment employees, the “green” industries, anarchists, environmentalists, women who want to be able to get an abortion (just in case), their boyfriends, students, professors, inmates, absentee ballots, well... a few other groups, I can’t list them all here, .... between all them and conservatives who realize that Romney isn’t conservative, that approximately 347 Republicans and 9 Democrats would vote for Romney in a general election. /sarc
Bust
Posted here earlier today was an article that said Forbes picked Utah as the best state for business. The article was from a newspaper in Nevada - not happy with what dingy Harry has done for them.
NO ROMNEY!
I have also been impressed by Huntsman (though his insider record under Obama makes me suspicious) and he was a far better governor than Romney and probably Rick “hate crimes” Perry. I’d pick him in heartbeat over Willard or Newt though none of the three can hold a candle to Paul.
Then bust it is, chump.
Everone’s entitled to their opinion.
But Frum would quit the party if someone other than these two??? He might as will just tattoo RINO on his head.
This is just blatant “insider” desire to control the party. There’s no patriotism here, no desire to undo damage done, and certainly no positive vision for the future.
To dismiss Cain as a clown is disingenuous to say the least. Guess I’ve seen how successful we’ve been under the
guidance of professional politicians. And I cannot begin to mount an arguement to continue down that course.
IOW, Frum has no use for conservatives.
