Newt Gingrich Stands by 'Soft' Immigration Stance, Despite Party Backlash

WASHINGTON — Newt Gingrich isn’t backing off his “humane” immigration stance despite complaints from Republican hardliners and fellow Presidential hopefuls — he’s embellishing it.

The former House speaker issued “10 Steps to a Legal Nation” this week, expanding on his remarks during Tuesday’s GOP debate

(snip)

Those guilty only of sneaking into the U.S. would have a path “to legality, but not citizenship” similar to the existing naturalization process, plus a penalty fee of at least $5,000.

“At least Gingrich has a plan.

It may never be passed by congress, but at least he has gone out on a limb and made a proposal for dealing with the problem. That’s more than I can say about Cain, Bachmann or Santorum. “

Some of us DON’T WANT a plan, particularly if it ends up being Amnesty, minus the right to vote (at least until the courts weigh in).

In other words a TERRIBLE PLAN is worse than no plan. What is so hard to figure out about that?

Only this past week had I gotten to the point of “I will never vote for Mitt Romney.” I am rapidly getting there with Newt as well.

...the 12m already here.

The left has been quoting that number for the last twenty years, and we parrot it without even thinking.

Newt is a nything but conservative. In recent years he has acted like a darn liberal.

Well, Bachman is out.
Cain is out.
Santorum is out.
Huntsman just plain sucks.
Ron Paul scares people to death.

The only one left untouched is Romney. The primaries aren't too far away. I guess he's the most conservative, because he's still standing, right? The rest aren't good enough.

Let's put it this way....Romney or Newt? Who else is left? The Republicans have already dissed the rest. They weren't "Perfect enough."

Our own set of rules, our demand for perfection, will defeat us every time. In the end, Romney will still be untouched on election day, because we've been so busy eating our own! We'll get the exact opposite of what we want, because we weren't willing to deal with one imperfection later. Instead. we'll get the trillions of Romney imperfections we deserve.

So do you really think that anybody is going to start loading cattle cars and deport 12 million+ back to Mexico? That’s what is being mandated and it’s not realistic until some real serious shooting gets started. Do you all really want to go there? Just asking.

But Cain also got heat for talking about an electrified fence and alligators in a moat. He is solid on this issue...and no, he isn’t anywhere close to being knocked from the top tier.

One last thing...to the Newters on here...we do understand the concepts Newt is preaching. We usually understand what he is saying. It seems to me that you are the ones who are blind to who your candidate really is.

The best plan I’ve ever heard about anything is, “We win, they lose,” Ronald Reagan’s famous plan vs the soviet communists. It’s genius was its sheer simplicity, its boldness, honesty and directness.

Likewise, a simple, bold, honest and direct plan would work against the illegal alien invasion. It’s not rocket science. Secure the borders. Crack down on illegals and their employers. No bennies to illegals. No jobs, no welfare, no food stamps, no SSI, no education, no hospital stays, no welfare, no bank accounts, no contracts, no drivers licenses, no social security, no medicare. Prison terms for criminals. They’ll leave as fast as they can.

Simply announce it as the ENFORCED law of the land and they will stop coming. Those already here will begin leaving.

We win, they lose.

"The former House speaker issued “10 Steps to a Legal Nation” this week, expanding on his remarks during Tuesday’s GOP debate"

Conservative base GOP voters, many who haven't closely observed Newt Gingrich over two decades, are getting their first glimpse of Gingrich's intellect and debate skills turned against them. Never forget that a keen mind loves the intellectual challenge of arguing an unpopular position and may drop conservative principles and ideology for the thrill of complex arguments and acceptance by peers.

If elected President, Newt's power of persuasion and oratory is a two-edged sword that can just as easily be misdirected to entice GOP members of Congress to abandon the conservative principles and desires of their constituents.

When longtime observers of Gingrich state they don't trust him, this real danger of philosophical betrayal is exactly what they are talking about.

"imperfection"

Allowing 30 million illegal invaders in to the USA is an imperfection? Most of whom support reuniting the South West with Mexico that's an imperfection? Wow.

and not one of them have put out a 10 point plan for either solving the immigration problem or even a 10 point deportation plan.

You’ve seen the transcript of his remarks, I am sure. He has said

control the border
guest worker program
review board
deportation in specific cases
very severe penalties for employers

Can you explain why you think that translates to proposing amnesty? I just don’t see it.

Do you think anyone in America, citizen or not, should be tried collectively rather than individually? Tried without any hearing of his individual situation or any mitigating circumstances?

Do you think that is an appropriate process for a candidate to advocate?

Is it really all-or-nothing with you?

Cain is not finished. Have you been seeing the polls? He is still at or near the top and with Newt being, well, Newt, Cain will rise again as the only viable option to Romney. Voting third party sounds like a Paulie thing to do...dumb.

How about a fine of $100 bucks a day plus court costs.

I am not for amnesty, but seriously... Which candidate will unilaterally kick out ALL people who are here illegally? Heck, we can’t enforce the immigration laws we have. Yes. Newt’s plan is amnesty for some and that does not sit 100% well with me,but there has to be a way to slam the door that is our porous border and start deporting at least those foreigners who are breaking laws (I know... just them being here is illegal). You know, there are two easy stances to take on illegal immigration. One is to keep everything the way it is and do nothing, which will continue to bleed our resources, dilute what is left of our culture and leave a continued gaping hole in our security. The other simple stance is to say, kick them all out now. As good as that sounds,I don’t see it ever happening. The status quo is not acceptable. Maybe Newt’s plan is the kind of thought out plan that could actually work.

Correction, Romney’s out. At least he is if you’re a conservative.

He's better than Romney, and Romney is being protected. If we diss Newt, we're screwed. He's the only electable canidate still in the race.

Sure, Newts idea totally sucks, but he can't do it alone. He'll need the House and Senate to pull it off. We could stop it there.
In the meantime, we've got to keep Romney from moving to the top, because if he's there on primary day, the job is his.
