For Perry, Life Was Broadened and Narrowed by the Military

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. — Rick Perry arrived on the campus of Texas A&M University in the tumultuous fall of 1968, cut his hair short, regulation military style, and donned a uniform. College students across America were rising up against the Vietnam War, but Mr. Perry, a member of the Corps of Cadets here, would not be among them.

“There will be no Columbia, no Berkeley here,” the university president, Earl Rudder, declared that fall. When a small band of antiwar protesters took to the steps of the Memorial Student Center, a building ...

“I don’t want to use the word ‘long-haired hippie types,’ ” said John Sharp, a Perry classmate and chancellor of the Texas A&M University system, “but a person who did not look like they fit into A&M said some kind of Jane Fonda-type stuff, and I remember Perry got up in his face pretty quick over that. He took exception to it, shouted the guy down.”

… It was an experience that both expanded and narrowed him, taking him to exotic locales while cementing his Texas roots and the traditional, conservative values that have been so central to his political identity. On Air Force missions overseas, he told students at Liberty University this fall, he had his first encounters with “oppressed people” — an experience that sharpened his idea of the United States as a beacon of democracy and helped convince him that Americans “cannot isolate ourselves within our borders.”

The college student who backed the Vietnam War is, at 61, the hawkish presidential candidate. Mr. Perry has called President Obama “irresponsible” for ending the Iraq war, urged the overthrow of the Iranian government — he would not rule out a military strike — and suggested he would deploy troops to Mexico to “kill these drug cartels” there.

I’m hoping Perry can pull out of this dive that he’s been in since the beginning of Oct. At this point there are only three candidates I could really support, the other two being Santorum and Bachmann. Perry needs to turn this around quickly as I feel he’s the most viable of the three, but it’s beginning to look like Gingrich and Romney. If Gingrich can’t hold someone has to move in to fill the ABR slot.

Still very fluid and as we’ve seen this primary can change dramatically overnight.

Give it time. Cain is only beginning to fall.

You’re going to be left with Newt, and that is a tragedy!

Thanks for the article. The New York Times tried to be snarky about Rick but his true character came through anyway.

What was the line his commander had? Will go look it up.

Okay, got it.

“He never lost his temper or got scared,” Mr. Munson said.

He still doesn’t. He will stay in this fight and I hope and pray that he can win it.

Kind like a penny on the railroad tracks after the train runs over it I guess.

Sometimes you just gotta wonder at the shear stupidity of some phrases (journalist and politicians too).

I didn't read the whole piece, but the title sounds like a hit against him.

Guess which profile as a young man the MSM, Americans with IQs of 65, and hateful Democrats prefer?

He has also pledged to reinstate “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the military policy that barred openly gay soldiers.

Big plus for Perry

Santorum has also said he would do this. Any others?

Well good for him. But here's a News Flash, that type of action and attitude wasn't restricted to Texas. Up here in Chicago my group of friends hated Hippies, Jane Fonda and Kerry's group of pinko-commies. 'We' were called 'Greasers'.

And on the night of the 'hippie riot' (8-26-68) on Michigan Avenue - between Grant Park and the Hilton Hotel - I cheered as the CPD busted their stinkin' heads with their batons live on National TV.

Plus it just so happened that earlier that day I was down there to see those dope smoking commies live for myself. They were disgusting with their waving of North Vietnamese and VC flags. So when leaving and the hippies 'attempted to' block traffic on Mich Ave I was more than pleased to follow the nice CPD Sgt who told me (Yelled) to 'GO' when my light turned green. Which I did knocking the scum out of my way with with my 'tank', a '62 Chevy.

Ergo, Perry's 'in your dace' attitude wasn't unique. So I can I run for POTUS now too?
(I'll put Russia back in their place pdq and tell Mexico to ESAD. Oh, and I wear a Stetson too.)

OOPS, typo..
'in your dace', should be 'in your face'
Why is the 'D' key next to the 'F' key anyway?

Back in Texas.....conservative Aggies say they all thought Perry was conservative (AND competent)....until he took to the 2012 campaign trail.

Perry’s 2012 campaign rhetoric and his record as governor didnt match, for starters. Added to that were Perry’s infamous debate flubs and his “one-note samba” favoring illegals.

Perry constantly reinvents himself-—to suit the occasion. He’s had more reincarnations than Bela Lugosi. Look for yet a-n-o-t-h-e-r Perry should this guy ever (gag) get into our WH.
