DES MOINES Having just taken his place at the front of the Republican presidential pack, Newt Gingrich now faces a potential backlash from conservative activists here in Iowa over an immigration proposal that he called humane but that his opponents quickly decried as providing amnesty.
The former House speaker appears to have alienated some of the conservatives who had warmed to his candidacy by saying Tuesday in a candidates debate that he would allow millions of illegal immigrants who have settled in the United States to become legal residents.

Backlash?! Ya think?!
Rationally I’d like to see deportation. Logically it’s not likely.
I’m anti-illegal as anyone, I support the AZ/AL movements. I’d like to see them go nation-wide.
I don’t think any GOP president is going to even go that far. Maybe Bachmann, but who knows in the end.
Get geared up. It wont be long now

So true. Let’s see; how many Conservatives have been knocked out of the race by our in-fighting? Pawlenty, (dropped out already) Bachmann, Perry, Cain, and now it looks like Newt has fallen from grace in the eyes of us Conservatives. Yep, we’ve pulled defeat from the jaws of victory. Romney’s strategy has worked: “Let the Conservatives destroy all their candidates themselves and I’ll take the prize.”
Very well said. All good points.
I’m hoping it was lousy debate performance by Cain/Perry that did them in and not this single subject thing tonight for Newt.
If Newt is gone, that’ll leave Romney as the surviror. Sucks, I say. None of the others are likely at all to come back. I think Newt can read the reaction and recover though, unlike the rest. We’ll see how it goes in the next week.
NumbersUSA and that other anti-illegal organization, I think FAIR(?) SHOULD BLANKET IOWA IN ADVANCE OF THE CAUCUSES on this one.
It only leaves Romney as a survivor if you vote for him. He is no better than Newt on the illegal topic. He just argued the opposite side in last night’s debate, but he has basically said the same thing as Newt before.
No one has forgotten Mitt’s ability to support both sides of an issue. So there is no real reason for anyone to consider him.
I would say Newt did it to himself. Before that "take the heat" announcement, he had already proposed allowing local committees to decide which illegals get to stay and which get deported. I wonder how many Newt's committees in Los Angeles would deport.
Sometimes one wonders which side he is on. "Right wing social engineering?????"
....and all the lipstick in the world will still not hide anyone's liberal tendencies as long as they support Amnesty, or "Gore-Bull Warming."
Of course, Newt is simply following in the footsteps of another, RINO, "Compassionate Conservative" (BARF) who also advocated/supported "Amenesty!"
Neither is Cain!
Amen.
The present field has left me with a sense of foreboding.
People are ignoring some key remarks he made, such as “I believe ultimately you have to find some system once youve put every piece in place, which includes the guest worker program, you need something like a World War II Selective Service Board that, frankly, reviews the people who are here. If youre here if youve come here recently, you have no ties to this country, you ought to go home. period.”

Here is a full transcript of his remarks from the debate:
I did vote for the Simpson-Mazzoli Act. Ronald Reagan, in his diary, says he signed it and we were supposed to have 300,000 people get amnesty; there were 3 million - but he signed it because we were going to get two things in return: We were going to get control of the border and we were going to get a guest worker program with employer enforcement.
We got neither. So I think youve got to deal with this as a comprehensive approach that starts with controlling the border, as the governor said. I believe ultimately you have to find some system once youve put every piece in place, which includes the guest worker program, you need something like a World War II Selective Service Board that, frankly, reviews the people who are here.
If youre here if youve come here recently, you have no ties to this country, you ought to go home, period. If youve been here 25 years and you got three kids and two grandkids, youve been paying taxes and obeying the law, you belong to a local church, I dont think were going to separate you from your family, uproot you forcefully and kick you out.
The Krieble Foundation is a very good red card program that says you get to be legal, but you dont get a pass to citizenship. And so theres a way to ultimately end up with a country where theres no more illegality, but you havent automatically given amnesty to anyone.
I do suggest if you go back to your district, and you find people who have been here 25 years and have two generations of family and have been paying taxes and are in a local church, as somebody who believes strongly in family, youll have a hard time explaining why that particular subset is being broken up and forced to leave, given the fact that theyve been law-abiding citizens for 25 years.
I do not believe that the people of the United States are going to take people who have been here a quarter century, who have children and grandchildren, who are members of the community, who may have done something 25 years ago, separate them from their families, and expel them.
I do believe if youve been here recently and have no ties to the US, we should deport you. I do believe we should control the border. I do believe we should have very severe penalties for employers, but I would urge all of you to look at the Krieble Foundation Plan.
I dont see how the party that says its the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century. And Im prepared to take the heat for saying, lets be humane in enforcing the law without giving them citizenship but by finding a way to create legality so that they are not separated from their families.
Now HOW can THAT be? The last poll had him at what 83% in Iowa?/s/
Some folks will go apoplectic from that - they tend to cherry-pick to suit their beliefs.
Plus, God said something about it too:
Leviticus 19:34
New International Version (NIV)
34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.
None of us are truly native to this land, our roots started generations ago and in other places.
What Newt is saying is I want corruption to continue.
Absolutely. Newt is a liberal RINO and thus cannot be trusted.
