PSU could raise tuition to cover damages from suits

HARRISBURG — Penn State University and former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky are among those potentially facing millions of dollars in civil lawsuits as the allegations of child sexual abuse against Sandusky continue.
If the university is sued and found civilly liable, students and their families could face higher tuition to offset the damages or settlements. Tuition increased this year because of cuts in state funding.
"When something bad happens, sometimes civil liabilities follow, so it's certainly not out of the question that somebody could sue not just Sandusky, but the school and others," said Jessie Allen, who teaches civil procedure, legal ethics and civil rights at University of Pittsburgh School of Law.

Why not just raise the cost of football tickets?
This just goes to show how out of touch academics are with the real world. Whether or not they realize it, the Penn State brand is tarnished. In a free market, damaged goods get discounted, not marked up.
The whole culture of the institution is in question. What was really going on in Happy Valley?

I’ll venture to opine that very few of the potential applicants or their parents will either remember or consider the sex abuse whilst choosing a college.
Name a college that has really suffered a drop in enrollment from any scandal.
Americans have totally accepted the propaganda that college is necessary for success in life.Every 23 year old deserves a $100,000 debt in exchange for a sheepskin.
That's what investigations and trials are for. Why don't we wait and see before we rush to judgment.

The Department of Education spends about $30 billion a year on subsidies for higher education. The bulk of that funding goes toward student aid programs, with the balance going toward grants to educational institutions. In 2008, grants to institutions cost $2.3 billion and aid programs cost $27.6 billion, which included $17.4 billion for student grants, $9.6 billion for student loans, and $0.6 billion for administration.

Certainly there will be the children of alums, faculty and diehard fans that would not consider any other school.

If this is investigated thoroughly, and if this scandal runs as deep as many suspect, I think it's safe to say that no college or university has ever had as egregious a scandal to contend with.

I bet any recent potential athletic recruits, considering Penn State, are ALL un-considering.
They’ll be fortunate if Temple doesn’t hang 70 points on them.
Until they name a big name coach who promises to "turn it all around." Watch.

However unfair it may be to the bulk of students who are very decent people (not including the rioting bums and the pathetic idiots wearing the “It don’t mean nuttin” buttons), PSU is a very damaged brand. I doubt they realize just HOW damaged it is; an indicator yesterday was a very incisive article by a sportswriter about how none of the college bowl games want Penn State, they don’t want the publicity, the reporters, and frankly, the toxic taint that is now associated with the brand. I’ll bet this carries over the admissions and quietly, into hiring because the first thing many people will think of, however unfairly, when they hear reference to PSU is the coverup of a monstrous crime. The hundreds of millions that will be paid out are just the tip of the iceberg this ship faces.
Wow. I thought FReepers were grown-ups. I haven't apologized for anything. I followed the Duke case carefully, and saw egregious rushes to judgment. So far, the Grand Jury has indicted three people after a three year investigation. No one has been convicted.
I have also watched Herman Cain's character be destroyed by four women and the media.
I have read FReepers trying to destroy current players who probably never heard of Sandusky. I have seen Joe Paterno's character destroyed because he took what someone else told him about an ex-employee to the athletic director and the Penn State chief of police(guess he should have been a vigilante and shot the guy based on hearsay).
I am not playing this game anymore. I hate the media. I have faith in the legal system.
Dear lawyers: cbs, abc, nbc, cnn, newsweek, new york times, san francisco chronicle, la times, homosexual groups, the Democrat party, etc......lots of money there.....deep pockets.....get the right jury and it’s buy a private island time.
And then they become eligible to “Occupy” somewhere.../s
