Dont expect Mitt Romney to backtrack on his Massachusetts health-care plan at any point this election cycle.
I am sure there are many people who have calculated, and perhaps correctly, that the healthcare plan I put in place in Massachusetts is not good for me politically, and if I want to encourage my political future, I should say it was a mistake and walk away from it, Romney told Fox Business Network host Neil Cavuto in an interview set to air later tonight.
You have seen a lot of candidates look at their biggest vulnerability, call it a mistake, and ask for forgiveness, Romney continued. In my case that wouldnt be honest.
He affirmed that he believes the health-care program was the right thing for Massachusetts then, although he conceded that it hasnt worked perfectly.
If it hurts me politically, its a consequence of the truth, Romney added. I am not going to walk away from that. Its right for states to come up with their own solutions. I doubt other people are going try and follow the one we put together. Maybe learn from our experience. Maybe come up with something better. But the wrong course is to have the federal government impose its will on the entire nation.

Say good buy, Mittens.
My respect for Slick Willard just went up.
I expected him to try to disown it. Its good he’s sticking by it even if its not popular.
I don’t agree RomneyCare is a good thing ever but what I hate more is a politician who is a weathervane.
Mittens has that reputation. Overcoming it will be a tall order.
Why go Romney when we already have 0bama in place?
You almost have to admire him for his courage, to stand by this turkey.
But America hates 0bamacare and Mr. Romney needs to be constantly reminded that his plan is what 0bama and his minions used as a blueprint for 0bamacare.
Now, does anyone honestly believe that he will have the courage to repeal 0bamacare, which is the offspring of his baby in Massachusetts?
Chris Wallace, in one of his more lucid interview moments on FoxNews Sunday several months ago, called Romeny on his claim that Romneycare didn’t cause increases while he was governor.
Wallace pointed out that Massachusetts received FED money for the purpose of implementing Romneycare, thus keeping the initial costs low — while Romney was Governor. The cost rises didn’t occur until after Romney had left office.
Convenient, huh.
One of the mains reasons the MSM wants Romney. He takes one of Obama's weaknesses off the table.
Yup. His own adviser said RomneyCare and ObamaCare are one and the same.
This is the problem we have with Mittens’ sticking with principle:
What is wrong with ObamaCare? He’s not the person to argue against it, without looking like a hypocrite.
And like I said, given his reputation, this will help him some but it won’t fix his problems with conservatives.
I can forgive him for RomneyCare. I can’t forgive him for being a liberal and a slippery politician.
Not mine. The fact that he will waffle on about anything else means that he is truly in favor of government-run health care. If this is what he wants to hang his hat on, he should be running in the Dem primary, not the GOP.
“But America hates 0bamacare and Mr. Romney needs to be constantly reminded that his plan is what 0bama and his minions used as a blueprint for 0bamacare.”
Americans are going to hate it more in a couple of years. When 40% of employers drop their health care plans to pay the fine. Essentially taking people off their health care plans and putting them on medicaid. Or paying for individual plans themselves if they can afford it.
Yeah, what did Massachusetts residents do to deserve the mandate enforced by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue?
What happens if I do not meet the mandate?
If you dont have health insurance by Dec. 31, 2007, you will lose your personal income tax exemption for 2007. That exemption gives you a Massachusetts tax savings of approximately $219.
In 2008, the cost of the penalty goes up. The fine will equal half of the cost of the lowest-priced Health Connector-certified plan for each month that you dont have coverage
Waivers will be available for those who cannot afford a plan that meets the rules. Check back for updates.
How is the mandate enforced?
The Massachusetts Department of Revenue will enforce the individual mandate through the tax process.
Used to feel sorry for mass residents, then realized they =send the likes of Barney Frank, Jon Kerry, and would still be sending Ted Kennedy if he wasn't burning in Hell, and don't have much sympathy.
FLIP SLICK WILLARD RINO ROMNEY needs to find a new hobby, running for the GOP nomination is a waste of time and money.
Not that I agree with him. Given the kind of guy he is, that took guts.
But its not going to help get to where he needs to go without a lot of work.
In the end, its not about RomneyCare. Its his philosophy and his situational ethics.
For those reasons, I don’t him anywhere near the White House.
Its good to be King.
My point is I don't admire him for stick with RomneyCare when the facts show it has failed. He refuses to accept the reality of the situation. He could have easily said, "I did not realize it would be so expensive to Mass., and as a result, I do not support it." Changing one's mind after receiving new facts is not flip-flopping.
I can't forgive him for RomneyCare because it's his being a slippery liberal politician that prompted his bringing it up in the first place.
The man is a snake through and through and isn't deserving of a position of serving the public in any form IMO.
That would be flip-flopping. If its your baby, defend it. If people don’t think that’s a good argument, they’re entitled to their own judgment.
I’m glad on this issue he is honest. That doesn’t mean I think he is in the clear.
There are other reasons to disqualify him from the presidency.
We differ on that - people make policy mistakes so I’m charitable.
But I can’t abide Slick Willard on all the other things. Its not RomneyCare that’s hurting him.
He has a lot of baggage he hasn’t realized he has and my guess is he will probably never come to terms with it.
Not so fast.
This socialist is a cancer inside the GOP and it has metastasized quickly.
Me thinks the patient ( GOP ) has only months to live ( 2012 ) wherein a new body ( party ) will take over.
