Barack Obama, a former smoker, urged Americans to stub out their cigarettes on the "Great American Smokeout Day," adding he knows just how hard it is to quit.
...
Obama, a longtime smoker, quit in early 2010 a year after entering the White House, his former spokesman Robert Gibbs and First Lady Michelle Obama have said.

I never plan to start up again. When I smoked I experienced Bronchitis at least twice a year. Since I’ve quit, I’ve had bronchitis once, and pnuemonia once. I don’t miss smoking in the least. My problem now is allergies, which I believe were made worse over the course of the 13+ years that I smoked. Airborne particulate matter from burning fields or forest fires seriously impact me.
As a former smoker, I have tried not to be obnoxious to those who smoke. I believe the main reason former smokers tend to be obnoxious is, once they quit, and their olfactory senses return, their bodies have a serious reaction to cigarette smoke and the odor from smoking. That’s my experience anyway. The only time I find myself offended by smokers is when they smoke in places that have been deemed off limits and I am forced to walk through their smoke - entries to public buildings or shopping areas for example.
Yeah 0 bummer, you and Gibbs have been lying PO$ since you took office. Like we are going to believe anything you or your butt boys say. Don't think so.
I urge those who are hooked on Obama to quit Obama. Obama is a disgusting habit that is detrimental to your health and well being.
I don’t believe for one minute that he quit smoking. If he speaks, he lies.
January 2003 for me — and not even a puff-in-secret since then.
I do think of all the tax money the government isn’t getting — kids suffering because of lesser money to education, etc., as I sit in the nice cushy recliner and watch the LCD TV while surfing FR on my new Laptop.
When I quit, a regular brand cost about $40/carton. Now, they are about $70/carton. I would smoke 3 cartons per month, so I figure I am saving about $2000 per year. Thus, I don’t feel guilty about splurging occasionally from the money I am saving by not buying cigs any more.
Actually, I was told by an immunologist that when you stop smoking, you can develop allergies that you never had before.
The only thing I recall Gibbs saying on the subject is that he hadn't seen Obama smoking in a while . . . not exactly the same thing!
A third reason, though not as much of one as the other two, was the first of the huge tax increases went into effect January 1989. That was the month I quit. Since then there have been numerous tax increases on tobacco. I do not recall the price of a carton of cigarettes when I quite. They were under $20. I was smoking 2.5 packs a day at that point. That's 7.5 cartons a month. At today's prices that would be $6,300 a year. Wow!
That would explain it. :-(
Now if he can just kick that cocaine habit.
Heck, I have lost count of how many times I have almost started smoking again because of Obama.
One thing is certain.... on the day that filthy bastard is forced out of the White House, I am going to buy me an expensive cigar and a bottle of Brandy......a bottle of Scotch, vodka, Jack, keg of beer, and, and, and...... That is if I can still afford ANYTHING by then. — If my wife sees this paragraph, I am a dead man. ;>)
Still, I miss it. It annoyed people and gave me something to do. I simply loved it and am only half kidding about starting again at eighty.
I sure don’t.
IMO, the decision to smoke tobacco is up to the individual. However, I also believe they should be prepared to accept and pay for the consequences of that decision. The taxpayer should not be saddled with the bill for smoking related health problems. I feel the same about alcohol use, and any other behavior where there are health risks.
Where does the assumption come from that I believe all smokers receive public paid healthcare? I am comfortable with requirements that those who receive public assistance be held to a different standard of behavior than people who are making a living for themselves. As an example, I would be for drug testing of people receiving welfare benefits. Why should the taxpayer be stuck paying for health care needs of people, who are already on the public dole, for engaging in activities and behaviors which are known to result in significant health impairments? Before you go down that road, no, I am not speaking to behaviors such as riding a bicycle, driving a car, or walking on a public sidewalk.
I don’t think we will ever see a similar headline with the word “Muslims” in place of “smokers.”
I smoked two cigarettes yesterday. I haven’t in a while and it gave me a buzz.
That must have been rough.
