WASHINGTON -- Newt Gingrich is the strongest Republican candidate when matched head to head against Democratic President Barack Obama, according to a McClatchy-Marist Poll released Tuesday.
The former speaker of the House of Representatives is neck and neck with the incumbent president. Obama leads 47 percent to 45 percent.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is next closest, trailing Obama by 4 percentage points. In that matchup, Obama leads 48 percent to 44 percent.
Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is the third best bet for the Republicans right now, 8 points back from Obama. No other Republican is within single digits of Obama. The survey has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The poll, coming as Gingrich has surged within the Republican field, could boost Gingrich's argument that he would be the party's best voice to debate Obama in the general election.
On one level, Obama is extremely vulnerable. Just 43 percent of registered voters approve of the way he's doing his job. On the economy - the top issue for most voters - 59 percent disapprove of Obama's performance, while 36 percent approve.
Also, just 38 percent say they definitely plan to vote for Obama, while 48 percent say they definitely will vote against him. Yet Obama fares better when matched up against specific Republicans. Beyond the matchups with Gingrich and Romney, Obama came out 49-41 over Rep. Ron Paul of Texas; 49-39 over businessman Herman Cain; 51-40 over Texas Gov. Rick Perry; and 54-35 over Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.
The survey of 1,026 adults was conducted on Nov. 8-10. Adults 18 years of age and older were interviewed by telephone. Telephone numbers were selected based upon a list of telephone exchanges from throughout the nation. To increase coverage, this land-line sample was supplemented by respondents reached through random dialing of cellphone numbers. The two samples were then combined. Results are statistically significant within plus or minus 3.0 percentage points.
So they all lose. If that is the case, I would rather risk this election with Cain. I know he can win this thing. Sure after two weeks of getting unfairly treated, he is a little low but I truly believe he can win. Cain/Bachmann is a winning ticket!!!
Please take me off the list. If I’m not on it, please make a note to never place me on it.
Thanks.
Cain will be getting my primary vote, baring anyone better coming along. At this point, he’s the best that has stepped forward.
Ping!
who paid for this poll?
Go for it. My choice is Newt. King Obama would crust Cain.
crust = crush
Im not being swayed by political winds. I hope everyone would just stick with Cain. He is the only true conservative of the bunch.
Please study up on Newt. He isn’t worthy of your support.
He talks a good game, then goes right out and does what the Left wants him too all too often.
Supporting him is illogical if you’re a Conservative.
No, the public has seen what Obama can do, and they realize he hasn’t a clue when it comes to promoting business and creating jobs.
Let’s have a few more debates and Newt will surge even more! do you know when the next one is scheduled?
I’m afraid you’re right. Cain is the most smypatico with my views but he’s just not ready for prime time.....too many deer in the headlights moments and I’ll guarantee they’ll be more to come.
I have some real issues with Gingrich, that being said, he IS definately the smartest guy in the room and would destroy Obama in the debates and (I believe) in the election.
Not decided yet but am leaning toward Newt as our best chance to take over the Presidency.
Ditto. If Gingrich is the nominee, we can kiss our country good-bye, because he would NEVER beat Obama. He has too much baggage, and he has zero appeal for minorities, including women. Worst of all, he has a unique ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, thanks to his massive ego.
My problem with Newt is that he clearly understands what is right and what is wrong. Unfortunately he does what he does anyway. He simply cannot convert what he knows into sound policy.
If he were elected, he would do some good things. Unfortunately he would undoubtedly implement more Leftist agenda items for them as was Bush’s proclivity.
That’s the last thing this nation needs right now.
Next debate is next Tuesday night on CNN.
Did any of you see Ann Coulter on Hannity last night? She is 100% Romney and listed all his amazing qualities. I thought I would choke. Couldnt believe she is totally in his camp.
Thinking of PIZZA.
What we have here is the Lamestream media pushing the Lame Candidate.
