Yes, Newt Gingrich has spiked in the polls. No, hes not going to be the nominee. Ive been trying to duck this one because it feels like laying out the obvious, but, briefly, three reasons:
1. The baggage hes always had the marital difficulties, the ethics troubles, a whole bunch of deviations from conservative orthodoxy over the years (such as that ad he shot with Nancy Pelosi: Our country must take action to address climate change) just isnt going to go away. Republican voters dont have those things in mind at the moment, but no candidate is more vulnerable to attack ads than the former Speaker.
2. Message discipline, lack thereof. Its impossible to imagine Newt not saying something that hurts him if theres a microphone in front of his face for a three-week stretch, which is what wouldgoing to happen if the press decides he actually has a chance at winning this thing. We have a couple decades of evidence, including earlier this year, showing that hes just not able to do it. For whatever its worth, Id add that as I read the polling over the years, Newts basic act is unlikely to wear well with voters after extended exposure. People just dont like the guy.
3. Both of those might be overcome, but this one wont: its highly unlikely that anyone who worked with Newt Gingrich when he was Speaker would want him anywhere near the White House. As detailed in many places, but perhaps most memorably by David Maraniss and Michael Weisskopf in their

OK, I can live with Gingrich/Palin as well. Herman can be Treasury Sec’y ... with a big, big broom. Or, Gingrich/Cain and Sarah as fed corruption clean-up czar, with an even bigger broom, mop, disinfectant, fumigation equipment, hazmat teams, etc. ... OK, you get the picture.
None of the above.
Now ... do you want Romney? Because that is what you will get if you push to destroy Newt.
I see...we're all supposed to put our blinders on and conveniently forget about all of Newt's previous backstabbing of Conservatives, much of it as late as May and June of THIS year, just to save the country. Right?
Whatever.
Stop being a baby and throwing a tantrum.
Hmmmm...so refreshing short memories and highlighting blatant RINOism is now considered "being a baby and throwing a tantrum?"
And I thought that FR was a CONSERVATIVE forum rather than a Republican forum. Silly me.
That kind of defeatist thinking is how we always get stuck with entrenched RINOs/CINOs.
OMG I pasted in your link, not planning to listen to the whole thing and couldn’t pull myself away.

LOL and AMEN to that.

OK, why don’t you supply us with an example of triumphant thinking at this late date.
pssst> As governor of California, Ronald Reagan actually LEGALIZED abortion, then went on to become the benchmark for conservative political philosophy, including the Right to Life.
Don’t tell anyone.
Reject RINOs/CINOs, burn down the corrupt GOP-E, and then rebuild it from the ground up by supporting TEA Party candidates at all levels of government.
It's the only way.
I have a hunch that the flack Callista Gingrich has been taking in the mainstream media (and on this website) might, just might, have a little something to do with the fact that she is a devout and outspoken Roman Catholic. I could be wrong.
Considering using this as my new tagline...
Herman Cain would make an excellent Commerce Secretary. He is not qualified to be Treasury Secretary, no matter how great a guy he is.
“Wrong, newt just happen to get there when Rush and talk radio arrived. “
Newt developed the plan and worked it with the candidates. Talk radio propounded it as well.
But Newt was the architect and fought Clinton tooth and nail as speaker—to the point of a government shutdown.
I am not blind to Newt’s faults nor to his virtues.
He was an outstanding Speaker.
He was foolish in his marital life, his interview with Pelosi, and his former support of cap and trade and global warming.
I found that net even Ronald Reagan was always Conservative enough for me. However, God used him as a deliverer of our nation.
May God Grant us many such men—including the presiden—in 2012!
Agree about the clip!
Wonderful, wide, and deep thinking!

2. and 3. are basically what I noticed about Gingrich when he was Speaker. Great idea guy...hot mess running things over the long haul.
A very wise man on this board has repeatedly said that "Rebellion is brewing!" Are you with that statement or against it? TEA Party or not? There is no middle ground in this political war.
