Washington (CNN) A new national survey of Republicans indicates that it's basically all tied up between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, with Gingrich on the rise and businessman Herman Cain falling due to the sexual harassment allegations he's been facing the past two weeks.
According to a CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday, 24% of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say Romney is their most likely choice for their party's presidential nominee with Gingrich at 22%. Romney's two-point advantage is well within the survey's sampling error.
While the level of support has pretty much stayed the same for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's making his second bid for the White House, Gingrich has seen his support jump 14 points since October.
The poll also indicates that 14 percent back Cain, down 11 points from last month. Four women have alleged that Cain sexually harassed them during the late 1990s when he headed the National Restaurant Association. Cain denies the allegations.
"Cain is struggling with the charges of sexual harassment, and while most Republicans tend to dismiss those charges, roughly four in 10 Republicans think this is a serious matter and tend to believe the women who made those charges," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.
The survey indicates that only a bare majority of Republicans tend to believe Cain, and more than a third say he should end his presidential campaign. Among the general public, Cain has a bigger credibility problem - 50% of all Americans say they tend to believe the women and only a third say they believe Cain.
"Not surprisingly, there is a big gender gap on this matter - women say this is a serious matter and believe the women,

As we've seen various candidates, Perry, Cain, Newt, rise, fall and rise in the polls..often by double digit margins..Mitt's support remains virtually unchanged in the low 20's. That is his ceiling. When substantial numbers of Cain and Perry supporters dester that candidate for various reasons, and almost NONE of them migrate to Mitt, well that tells you that Mitt will NOT be the nominee..
freepers are already doing just that...
This poll is just like the other crap national poll that was released. The only reason you do these national polls is to create a narrative. They also never release the geographic distribution for these polls which means they can choose distributions that can favor certain outcomes and still fall within ‘scientific’ guidelines. Regardless of whether it is accurate it does reflect a shift towards Gingrich.
The PPP for a larger group for the same period has Gingrich on Top 28% Cain at 25% and Romney in 3rd 18% which I think is a more accurate picture. Now on a state by state I doubt we will see too much difference but we will have to see. The press has a way of fueling a narrative to try to drive down a candidates.

This seems like a trend, as was predicted by most political analysts without an axe to grind. I suspect we will be seeing many more come out with similar results.
It is what it is. American Politics 101.
I’ll be waiting for Rasmussen, but expect to see Cain has peaked, Rick is in bad shape and Gingrich seriously rising.
I think this sample also includes Democrats.... do you agree or am I reading the sample incorrectly?
60% Democrat lol and 90% registered...yeah I believe that.
Cain is toast. He should quit and throw his support to Gingrich.
(I think that’s the correct phrase from the Cain Supporter handbook....)
Agreed.
Another desperate attempt to bring down Cain. The poll is a joke. Yeah CNN the model for objective journalism.... (sarcasm off)
Romney has been running for what five years someone tell him to give it up.The primary will change flavors many times.Independents will be more exposed to Cain’s mathematical economic genious and Cain will win.
Nope. Cain is not Finished yet.
I agree.
Polls ARE slanted.
If they asked a question like “If you were starving to death and the only thing left to eat was your grnadmother’s body, would you do it to survive and let your children live?”
THEN the results of the poll would be announced as “Most Americans approve of eating their grandmother!!
They REALLY don't want Cain in the lead. I know they want Romney big time, because he's one of them. They'll settle, though, for Newt. He and Nancey get along so well.
Newt for VP (where he can't get into that much trouble, and he can send the democrats and their Pravda media back to their seats when they start to misbehave).
Oh my! Seems a shift in support is taking place.
What besides this (Newt shut down the government), would be issues the Dems have to bombard Newt. We need to be up to speed on how they would torpedo each nominee.
CNN has become the third rate network of insane ass clowns who are completely full of themselves.
