Crime and Courts: Want to keep guns out of your home? Buy a 'no-gun' sign from the city

Now that Wisconsin allows people to carry concealed guns, here's one thing you might want to know: That includes your home. That means that everyone from the Mary Kay lady to the plumber can come into your home packing heat, unless you tell them they can't, or unless you post a sign.

The law, which allows people to apply for licenses to carry concealed guns, knives, Tasers and billy clubs, went into effect on Nov. 1.

People who oppose the law -- according to some polls they make up the majority of the state -- might be put off at having to stick a sign on their door to keep guns out of the home. But I think it beats having to tell everyone who comes to the door that they need to put their gun in the car.

So I'm going to buy a sign, which are being sold at the Madison City Clerk's office in Room 103 of the City-County Building at 210 Martin Luther King Blvd., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sign, a 5-inch-by-7-inch vinyl sticker, costs $5.

Vintage kukris like that might be valuable. Certainly very useful and a great memento of his time spent there.

But they will leave their guns outside and beat you to death with a baseball bat.

Absolutely. Whenever I want to kill someone, I make sure to check first to make sure I'm using a legal weapon. [facepalm]

>> It in no way says the owner of the house does not own a gun <<

Yeah, but haven’t you ever heard of stupid criminals? There are plenty of them out there, even in such a “full-of-intellectuals” locale as Madison.

MCL 750.227 says something about hunting knives adapted or carried as such, so I wouldn’t push it.

Just when I think the loony left can't reach a higher level of stupid, they always surprise me.

I know. They're really, really, really amazingly good at stupid.

"I would say we're probably selling at least five to 10 a day," says Elena Berg in the City Clerk's office. "Mainly businesses, but some are going on homes as well."

Maybe they're being purchased by conservatives to stick onto their liberal neighbors' houses.

I suspect that someone who put such a sign on his house and was himself armed, should he shoot an intruder, would be adjudged guilty of murder because he had that sign that effectively notifies a home invader that it is safe to invade that home.

I disagree. Just because you forbid others from being armed on your property in no way implies that you're unarmed. You'd prohibit your neighbor from parking in your driveway, but you park there don't you?

Better check that raipier wit at the door, friend.

There’s a sign: “Don’t Tease Me, Bro!”

Mr. Elbow,

Placing any “No Gun” sticker on your home will be far more likely to welcome the criminal element. After all, a home is far easier pickings when the homeowner is unarmed.

OMG why not just put up a “rob me” sign instead? makes about as much sense.

Is it legal to carry a camping axe in your car? I use my kukri as a camping axe. If that’s too much liberty for Michigan I guess I just won’t ever go there.

Here’s your sign:

Dear criminals.
I am unarmed and obviously stupid.
You take it from here.

Put up a sign on your door that says “No Democrats Allowed” and see what happens.

Are the signs meant to replace vocalization, as in, please leave your gun in the car if you are carrying?

How many “strangers” enter people’s homes anyway? The stranger would most likely knock on your door and shoot you when you opened it.

This is so silly on every level.

Come to think of it, the Serial Murderer on Dexter doesn’t carry a gun.

He even lives in Florida, a “shall issue” State I believe.

I think firearms are very low on the list of preferable implements of murder.
If I were to have such a list. ;^)
