Back in 1999, I was driving into State College for a Penn State football game, listening to the pregame show on the radio.
They were interviewing Jerry Sandusky about his impending retirement. The play-by-play man asked him how much he had enjoyed working with Joe Paterno.
“Nobody enjoys working for Joe,” Sandusky said. “He’s hard on everyone. He demands perfection, and perfection is hard to achieve. And he lets you know about it when you fall short.”
The host sort of recoiled from the answer, but the color man cackled and said, “Yeah, Joe and Jerry don’t exactly see eye to eye.”
The color man was George Paterno, brother of the coach.
That’s what makes the defense of Joe Paterno offered by Sally Jenkins of The Washington Post and others so absolutely misguided. Jenkins’ idea was to call a shrink and ask him about the psychology of reporting one’s friends for the acts of which Sandusky has been accused.
But Sandusky wasn’t a friend. He was a co-worker, an underling – and one, by then, whom Paterno knew to be capable of some ghastly things. So what if we rethink this and view Paterno not as a man of honor who protected his friend out of misguided loyalty but as CEO of a corporation – which, essentially, is what a major college football coach is – who has discovered misdeeds by a top executive?
And make no mistake, whether he liked him or not, Paterno did protect Sandusky. He knew about the 1999 incident. He knew about the 2002 incident. He probably knew much more. Yet, he allowed this alleged predator to go on for another decade, even though he knew Sandusky was a foster parent and head of a charity that brought vulnerable children into his orbit.
And remember, Sandusky would be on the loose today if it were up to Joe Paterno. The coach can say what he wants about hindsight. But for hindsight to be meaningful, it has to come before the frog march. Ask Jack Abramoff.
The I-told-my-boss defense also does not fly for Joe. It’s fine if you start out that way. You tell your boss. You get the paper for a week. If you don’t see a story in the paper about what you told your boss, you take other action. Particularly if you’re Joe Paterno.
Because if you’re Joe Paterno, your boss – the athletic director – is not actually your boss. He can’t fire you – the AD tried once, with the help of the president of the university, and Joe rebuffed it. He can’t discipline you – Paterno’s version of right and wrong is infinitely more credible than the ADs to the people who care about Penn State football. And the performance review is done by the TV-watching, ticket-buying, suite-reserving, game-attending public, which cares all about Ws and Ls and nothing about your opinion.
It’s a little more complicated if you’re Mike McQueary. To him, Joe is much more than a friend. He is a mentor, a boss, an example of what manhood and leadership are supposed to be. If he thinks the Sandusky secret should stay in-house, it is not as easy to go against this. But go against this you must.
But back to the original question: If Paterno didn’t protect Sandusky out of friendship and loyalty, then why? And why did those whose ties are not as strong – the president of the school, the VP of finance, the athletic director – not only not come forward but affirmatively lie on Sandusky’s behalf?
There is a good chance the AD and vice president could go to prison for awhile … and perhaps longer if more details emerge.
And how big is this cone of silence? Does it include the university police? The local police? Other state officials and/or office-holders? And, again, why? What are these victims to make of the community they live in and the men who run it? Did nobody care about them enough to stand up and stop this?
This time last week, we all assumed these were decent men. The rioters in State College obviously still think Paterno is.
Why then? Why was this hidden? A lot of people think the secret inside the secret has been revealed – what on earth could be worse than a 40-count indictment for child molestation? But some other secret was bigger. That secret is worth keeping even if it means prison for some of the top officials at Penn State and, for Paterno, the loss of the job that seemed to be his for life and a reputation envied by all in his profession.
That must be one hell of a secret.

It would be in keeping with other things I've heard about.
Put yourself in the position of a wealthy pedophile: if he's ever exposed, his life is over -- his money gone in lawsuits, his business gone, his associates not being able to continue any association with him. He would be finished.
Now here's my hypothetical scenario: suppose he acquires the services of somebody who has access to vulnerable young boys. The procurer seduces a boy, breaks him in, and when he's sure the kid is ready to be rented out sets up a meeting with the wealthy pedophile. The boy is delivered drugged so he won't remember the details and won't recognize the wealthy pedophile. After the encounter, the boy is sobered up and delivered to the foster home (or whatever).
Now assume a ring of pedophiles like above. With numbers come safety, in that they can't/won't finger each other, but they CAN pull strings to quash any investigation of the procurer. Also assume that they have enough at stake that they can arrange the disappearance of anybody who threatens them. That's what they've been seeing in Europe.
I think they fear that if present and past players are interviewed, and whole lot of steenkin' things are going to be revealed.
No surprise there. I used to work at a public TV network for a number of years. There was the “elite” people who worked all the high paying ball games and events and you had to be invited into that circle. It didn’t matter what you knew or didn’t know, just a popularity contest.
A few of the elites in charge inflicted ETV sports on the rest of us. Their buddies from outside would get hired to do the directing and whatnot for good money. The rest of us worked for whatever we made and how long it went. Even the ones who did well at it never were invited in to the circle.
I did everything I could not to get in it. I had a master schedule account and could see when they were coming. I would schedule vacations doctor appointments and anything else I could.
I heard it finally died after I left. It cost a fortune and achieved nothing.
If that’s true. then it’s time to start a Sandusky “suicide” pool.
A friend of mine knows Bobby Bowden who told him yesterday that Bowden thought Sandusky was gay.
Gotta remember that DA who vanished back in 2005.

I do NOT agree. Instead, take all sports away from Penn State for as long as this has gone on. No round ball, no pointed ball, no white balls in gopher holes etc.
That would punish them better than being shot.
Hey, it was just kids, not football players, right? And they were probably thrown away after being raped, instead of enrolled at PS, so no big deal.

Agree that there likely is a whole lot more to the story than has been published.
It is shocking to me that so many people in so many agencies had to have known and did nothing...nothing for decades.

They all were willing accomplices in letting Sandusky run rampant raping young boys for at least 15 years. It sure seems that someone made that DA disappear and one would this it would've been cleaner to have eliminated Sandusky instead. This would only happen if they were A) directly involved in a sick pedo-ring and wanted the "fun times" for the sick pukes to continue and/or B) Sandusky had blackmail material on numerous key folks.
Sandusky will be where the buck stops. Everyone else who goes down over this will be over the cover up with the “system” saying they should have done more but they will only receive slaps on the wrists. If there is a pedo-ring involved it will be seriously covered up that makes the nods and winks over Sandusky pale in comparison. If they think he'll blow everything out of the water, then he'll “commit an apparent suicide” and the final clean up and tying up loose ends will begin.
It is amazing to me that no one seems to recall that night. It was as if it turned on and off as soon as the police left the area. It was all over the TV when it was going on. I just spoke to someone who I worked with then and he remembers it also.
I have so many files on the Gricar case it’s unreal. Immediately before his disappearance, there were at least two ads placed in the area newspaper by someone wanting to ‘get rid of’ the DA, Ray Gricar.
They also found a bag with a receipt for a blank CD in his car...but no CD. Now think. If you were going to destroy a hard drive but wanted to keep the information it contained...
You could be right, I suspect there are some powerful politicos knee deep in this as well.
The night Gricar went missing, they sent a dozen police cars, a swat team, and helicopters with searchlights to the Penn State campus.
He had scheduled an appointment with an ‘informant’ but never showed up and neither did the informant. Details get lost. Information drips out and causes chaos. Misinformation is rampant.
After that, the Penn State angle was NEVER mentioned again.
The homo culture will do anythng to protect themselves.
You wait, they will pick a few to go out with the trash and the other people in on this will never be questioned.

Perfectly true. The copter chase was *the* news story of the day. After, there was more strangeness going on, in hindsight it looks like Gricar was either bumped off or might be in the protection program. For example, there were numerous anonymous claims of knowledge and as far as I remember they looked like they might be from college folks. There was also a number of anonymous threats against Gricar, in the form of registered domains with the threat as domain-name.
I’ll have look and see if this stuff is in my backups. It should be, but it might have been unlucky and been stored on one of the disks that were fried without a backup. Optimistic, though.
Why isn’t the Wife Swapping Studies scholar-president of State Penn on the hook to become part of the chain gang too?

Am I recalling this right? I seem to remember that the ‘informant’ Gricar was supposed to be meeting was a seventeen year old who had called Gricar for help. No name. No gender. But the ‘search’ was broadcast on live TV for at least two hours and centered on a motel near the campus.
