Today was the first test of the new Emergency Alert System, which is a centrally controlled version of the Emergency Broadcast System whose tests have been annoying the hell out of people for the better part of fifty years. The idea is to give the President a way to alert the entire populace to a national emergency instantly, by seizing control of all TV and radio communications.
In the event of a nuclear war, large-scale civil unrest, a massive cyber-attack, or a zombie apocalypse, you’ll hear a headache-inducing tone, followed by emergency instructions. Unless we get attacked by an electromagnetic pulse weapon. Then you’ll be alerted to disaster by the collective howl of millions of enraged cell phone users. The EAS tone is less alarming.
The test was a… well, “failure” is such an ugly word. Let’s just say it was a “conditional success.”

We will also need new software since Microsoft is no longer supporting their WinEmergency Alert System software. We have contracted with 5 kids from a local high school hacker club for only $500 billion to write a brand new system for us. They tell us it will be called, "OMG, Duck Dudes!"

This is absolutely Obama’s fault. I was able to get my meatball sub this afternoon from the sub shop, so in the case that this was an actual emergency, I would have been well fed.
Probably could have pressed the button at 3AM on a Saturday and got similar, less high-profile results.

The reason for the EBS is to make broadcasting - and listening to broadcasts - sound important.Everything else is eyewash.

The DU’ers were saying the same thing in 2008 about Bush. In 1999 others were saying Bill Clinton would use Y2K to seize power and rule as “Dictator-N-Chief for life”. I don’t specifically recollect but I won’t be surprised if the clintonoids weren’t saying the same about GH Bush too.

If an emergency of any kind happens, we don’t need Washington DC taking our valuable time talking about the big picture. We need the state to tell us were to go or to stay put. We need survival info and taking time for anything else will kill people.
Well, the point may be that it's the government S that will HTF - and they want to be sure they can shut us down first?
Just because it hasn’t happened doesn’t mean it won’t. I’m sure the good folks of Venezuela have found Hugo to be a creeping creep and that some of them did envision such happening.

Leaving aside Godwin’s Law, I’m talking more about Chicken Little then I am National Socialism. This makes the fourth president in a row I’ve been told was about to establish martial law and declare dictatorship or monarchy.
Like clockwork. Every administration it’s the same thing. Just the different fringe depending on which party is in the White House. The thing is it’s more entertaining coming from DU then it is to see it here.
And thinking about it, it wasn’t the clintonoids saying this about GH Bush. It was the Perot crowd. That was the first time I heard the FEMA camp story trotted out.
