Ohio is done. It’s been a basket case for decades.
Just idle curiosity on my part, as I am not a resident of the state.
I have lots of friends who voted yes on issue 2, but they are from my rather conservative church. Several of them voted for issue 2 even if they were in unions due to their overriding personal beliefs.
However, just in my own family, my grandfather and dad were steelworkers and I’ve been in and out of unions during various jobs. My sister, 2 sister-in-laws, 2 nieces and nephew are directly affected by this issue. I think that’s pretty typical for Ohioans.
They all yell and scream about the greedy capitalists but vote against 2 because they get more money.
As far as the other thing...these people who trash businesses left and right, then wonder why they can't find a job remind me a lot of angry single men, who complain about women all day, then wonder why they're always alone on Friday nights.
LOL!

That is no way to run a campaign.”

The Unionistas dumped a whopping $30 MILLION into this campaign! The way I look at it is these thugs will have $30 million less to spend in 2012 when the extremely crucial presidential and congressional elections take place and by that time the Ohio legislature will have likely passed another round of laws limiting collective bargaining anyway!

That is the proof that the union bill was not about Obama or supporting Obama.
Kasich was terribly served by the Ohio Legislature that loaded that legislation up with all kinds of junk. Honest to goodness, they tried to spell out HOW evaluations would be done on workers. It was silly. It got so much into the weeds that it even had students evaluating teachers. Honest to goodness. (”student satisfaction, which may be measured by surveys, questionnaires, or other forms of soliciting feedback”)
Sen Tom Niehaus, a wheeler-dealer, helped construct a bill that would never pass.
Had this been a clean bill just about collective bargaining over pay and pensions this would have passed by a landslide.
The media is going to present this as some kind of triumph for Obama. The truth will be that Ohioans looked at this over-reaching bill and rejected because it was a monstrosity.”

This is perhaps the best post I’ve read all night and I believe it hits the nail on the head. I had a thoughtful discussion on the phone with my mother last night who is a very hard-working Ohio public high school teacher. She is also a very staunch conservative who finds herself frequently at odds politically with her die-hard liberal colleagues because she values things like state solvency over teacher and union special interests.
However, she did express to me that she was very displeased with the numerous additional state requirements clogging up the measure, including taking 180 continuing education credits every five years, which would be very expensive and burdensome, and being subjected to excessive state-drafted “one-size-fits-all” standardized tests and evaluations. My mother was undecided about the measure and only in the final hours grudgingly decided to vote “yes”.
I agree that if Kasich and the Ohio Legislature go back to the drawing board and pass a clean bill to limit collective bargaining over pay, pensions, and benefits, it would have a much better chance of withstanding a voter referendum.
Sounds great. We will all definitely be keeping an eye on Ohio on the run-up to the 2012 elections...
Brownshirts, indeed, will be emboldened. I hope Walker has stocked up on the Lysol to clean out the capitol building after the pigs camp out there again.
I'd be willing to bet that at least 50% of Ohio voters were completely clueless or confused by issue 2. It had absolutely nothing to do with Obama, Democrats or Unions. Voters were scared by the ads with policemen saying their safety was at risk with a yes vote. There was ZERO effort to back the YES vote through media advertisement....ZERO.
Note to folks in Ohio: If you would like to see a preview of coming attractions, I cordially invite you to visit NYS. We’re bleeding people, jobs, red ink, and House seats. In spite of all this, the state hired over 50,000 people during a recent hiring freeze. All this is going on only a couple of states away, yet the majority of you still vote to screw yourselves silly. Sigh.
First, I’ll do a column on this today, but stop blaming Ohio “conservatives.” This was not well sold-—should have had a massive PR campaign from the get go. Second, so what if they go back to WI? Good! These campaigns are costing the unions a fortune and I think this is precisely the way to break them. See my column later.
Yep. The ads for issue 2 here in Ohio were numerous, ominous and devoid of any real information, just what the general populace needed to make an emotion-based decision on something most know nothing about.
At least we said no to Obamacare.
Unreal. Cya Ohio.
Thanks for giving me something positive out of this. From where I'm sitting it looks like a majority of the people in OH want big daddy govt to guarantee them a good life at someone else's expense. Everyone talks fiscal reform and personal responsibility until they have take control of their own lives.

Someone told me this morning that their spouse that is a teacher in Ohio would have lost 13K a year if the bill went the other way yesterday. And all teachers in Ohio must have their masters degree and start at 17K a year????
Another outside question is why can’t all government to the POTUS (most especially senate and congresscritters) all take pay and benefit cuts.I don’t get the complex idea of a GM worker getting 45 an hour 100% bennies to the max and it is all tax payer funded?I don’t understand the entire cluster but DC needs to downsize and CUT PAY AND BENNIES.POTUS getting 400K a year and Bank CEO’s millions matches the COLA but the rest of America doesn’t
This is why the dems planned for a Nov 15th start of the recall. They need the union goons here. I’m so sick of this. We really have to solidify our majority in these recalls. Time to deploy, again. My soldier son-in-law has deployed 5 times to Iraq and Afghanistan. We MUST do our civilian duty.
I heard the Ohio talkers were for this issue 2. Is that correct? If so, you guys need to set them straight. Seriously, research WI and send the legislature and Gov and the talkers stories of our successes.

See my post 139, this summary of Wisconsin is excellent. Perhaps you can send it on to those in Ohio who know.
