You could call it a debate in the style of Americas most famous series of oratorical confrontations but only if Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had addressed each other from comfy, high-backed armchairs.
And spectators had been willing to shell out at least $200.
Georgias two Republican candidates for president, friends who have watched each others back during much of the early campaign, will go toe to toe Saturday evening in a two-man debate in the backyard of a third contender, Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Last spring, when a Texas tea party group conceived of it , the 90-minute session might have been considered a mere experiment an antidote to GOP debates that featured an army of candidates reduced to 30-second sound bites.
But in a Republican primary that has made volatility a byword, the Saturday night debate could mark the beginning of a less-than-friendly, tea party-driven fight for the right to challenge former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination.
A Washington Post/ABC News poll released Friday showed Cain in a virtual tie for the lead with Romney among GOP voters. Gingrich, whose campaign cratered after a May debut, is essentially tied with Perry right behind the two front-runners.
Perhaps more important, other polls show that should his campaign falter under the weight of the current charges of sexual harassment Cain supporters prefer Gingrich as a second choice.
C-SPAN has decided to broadcast the debate live . . .
“You might want to tone down the mindless trash talk. God has a way of humbling out of control arrogance.”
If that is true, then as it pertains to you, He’s asleep at the wheel.
YOU need to knock off your daily insults to FReepers. YOU are likely driving away folks that are on the fence for Cain and YOU are losing votes for the guy.
Now, if I someday vote for Cain, and I very well could, it DAMN sure won’t be because of some mouse brain moron on the internet, trying to intimidate me into shutting up..... and voting for Cain.
Wipe off your chin, pick your pacifier up off the floor, stuff it back into your mouth and hop back up onto you hobby horsey.
LOL! Is there any doubt who will win?
LOL....Good job... THAT IS FUNNY.
Never... LOL
Ya think????
ROFLOL
Newt could dance circles around anyone in a debate format, imo. But Herman is my guy. My expectation for the debate is that both men will be respectful. I hope both guys do well, and that we’ll get to see more primary debates like this one, instead of playing “gotcha” with Chris wallace or Anderson Cooper in 30 second sound bites.
Good luck to both of them.

In what way? Debating?
Newt's applying for the most important executive position on planet earth, yet he's never run a small business, nor been at the head of any hierarchical organization that I know of.
The man also has had some infamous lapses in sound judgment, going off the conservative reservation, time and again.
I like Newt as the head of a major government department, or as a cabinet member, but president? Sorry, but I'm not inclined to vote for another inexperienced former legislator with questionable abilities to run the executive branch.
At least Cain has run major corporations in the real world, and has a proven track record of accomplishment as a chief executive.
If GodFather’s Pizza is a major corporation...ok. I don’t believe you have to run a corporation to know how to create jobs. Both Cain and Gingrich know how to create jobs.
As far as the debate, I don’t believe there is a candidate in either party that can hold the stage with Newt. He is an encyclopedia of historical knowledge and facts. He will likely bury anyone he goes up against and would absolutely destroy Obama.
Will he get our nomination? Who knows? But don’t bet against Newt in any debate.
Thanks NoGrayZone.
True, but you have to have some experience outside of theoretical economics modeling, or legislating, to do so. That's the problem with most legislators. They've never run a business, or a government - small or large.
Why some people overlook the obvious fact that a person should have at least some prior experience for a job as important as the presidency, is beyond me. You would demand an adequate resume from an applicant for any other position on earth, but when it comes to the US presidency, some people just throw common practices and common sense right out the window.
And guess what? It's not the president's job to create private sector jobs. It's his job to run the executive branch of the federal government, and to be the leader of the country. Beyond that, all he can do to affect the overall economy, is champion free market capitalism, and use the power of his office to get government out of the way of the private sector.

Most successful legislators have turned out to be awful Executives because they confuse "getting something done" for "doing the right thing". They confuse consensus for leadership
Please provide us with some specific examples.
And where is the evidence to support this assumption? Gingrich is a very good talker. His leadership record is pretty bad. In a choice between leading on principal and political expedience Newt has choose expediency every single time.
You might want to tone down the mindless trash talk. God has a way of humbling out of control arrogance.
Hence the need to use a bit of common sense when choosing who to support for your next president. That person is going to be the CiC of our military, and the spear point of our foreign policy for years to come. They'll also set the tone for the entire administrative machinery of our government, including all of the alphabet agencies.
I'm afraid that I'd rather entrust those vital responsibilities to someone who has a demonstrated track record of successfully running a large organization, be it private or public.
Choosing a former legislator to be the next president is akin to electing a senior board member of a corporation to be the next CEO, simply because he sounds good, and has served near the top. That's just nuts.
Not an intelligent way to persuade others to vote for your guy, in fact quite a turnoff, if that represents Cain.
I’m with you, Gator - Newt/Cain
