You could call it a debate in the style of Americas most famous series of oratorical confrontations but only if Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had addressed each other from comfy, high-backed armchairs.
And spectators had been willing to shell out at least $200.
Georgias two Republican candidates for president, friends who have watched each others back during much of the early campaign, will go toe to toe Saturday evening in a two-man debate in the backyard of a third contender, Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Last spring, when a Texas tea party group conceived of it , the 90-minute session might have been considered a mere experiment an antidote to GOP debates that featured an army of candidates reduced to 30-second sound bites.
But in a Republican primary that has made volatility a byword, the Saturday night debate could mark the beginning of a less-than-friendly, tea party-driven fight for the right to challenge former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination.
A Washington Post/ABC News poll released Friday showed Cain in a virtual tie for the lead with Romney among GOP voters. Gingrich, whose campaign cratered after a May debut, is essentially tied with Perry right behind the two front-runners.
Perhaps more important, other polls show that should his campaign falter under the weight of the current charges of sexual harassment Cain supporters prefer Gingrich as a second choice.
C-SPAN has decided to broadcast the debate live . . .
Newt would be a decent VP for Herman.
He knows the Federal Leviathan and maybe the guy to help Herman disassemble it, and has the inside the belt way knowledge that Cheney brought to GWB's ticket....
I’m planning on making brisket and mashed potatoes, with some wine (as the vege) to enjoy while watching!
Will CSPAN have it saved to watch? Celebrating the misters birthday tomorrow and I have tried to set it to record but it list -Washington Today- (think it was) for hours and hours.

cain bump.
I wish them both well.
Which is it, 90 minutes or 3 hours?
Or is that new math?
I want them both to do well... and Newt to win.
That’s a mighty upside-down ticket. If Newt is on the ticket, he should be the presidential nominee. He’s far superior to Cain.
It's not even a question of will Newt win. It's a question of how badly he runs up the score.
I know... I was trying to be ... well... kinda nice. ;>)
Newt is going to train Cain on the fine skill of debating, as well as teaching him some valuable historical lessons. This may well be the ticket. #1 either way will pick the other as VP.
You might want to tone down the mindless trash talk. God has a way of humbling out of control arrogance.
In a choice between conservative principals and political expediency Newt has chosen expediency every single time.
Wine as the vege? I like the way you think!
Yeah, but just think, if Newt gets to the White House he can invite nazi pelosi over for couch sit downs and talk over shoving their glo-bull warming scam down our throats whenever he wants!
It’s better than watching Romney debate himself.
