The day after playing in a Minneapolis concert, Cory Smoot - also known as Flattus Maximus, the guitarist for metal band GWAR - was found dead on the band's tour bus Thursday.
GWAR frontman Dave Brockie released a statement Thursday to Brooklyn, N.Y.-based MetalSucks, an online site featuring posts on heavy metal music.
"Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans," Brockie said, adding that a full statement would be released in "the next day or so."
The band played at First Avenue on Wednesday. They were crossing into Canada on Thursday and were due to perform Friday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.

Flatlinus Maximus.
Let me guess.... Natural Causes. /s
I cut my heavy metal teeth on GWAR! They use a lot of brass and fast, heavy riffs in their music. It’s PERFECT for pushing out that last rep on the bench or running that last 1000 ft. before dropping in the grass.
This is sad. They were quite the stage performers, as you can see by their costumes.
Believe it or not, the metal community is very much against drug use. There are obviously outliers, but in general, the idea of metal is that it gets you moving and is a replacement for drugs. Lord knows I’ve had my time of it!
What border were they preparing to cross ?
Death by Misadventure?
And we just learned MPLS was moved to near the Canadian border...idiot reporters.
A fine, upstanding citizen. He will surely be missed.
That’s only in England.
Metal Ping
No offense, but they seem like a low grade knock off of Alice Cooper (theatrics) and Metallica (riffs). And I cut my teeth on Black Sabbath. I have seen ‘em all.
Natural causes, indeed! The human body wasn't built to withstand years and years of massive doses of drugs, alcohol, and other pollutants.
Reminds me of how sad I was when I learned that John Entwistle was found dead. :-(
Whatever border it was, looks like Cory made it...
Never cared much for the satanic imagery favored by so many heavy metal bands (and I’m a heavy metal fan.)
Some of that horrid noise Bill listens to?
What’s not to love? GWAR was a Giant leap for civilization
