Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Fla.), chair of the Democratic National Committee, said Thursday that for states to enact constitutional amendments that say human life begins at conception is an extreme and radical step.
For the vast majority of Americans, including people on both sides of the abortion issue, this is an extreme and radical step, she said.
Speaking to reporters on a conference call, Wasserman-Schultz said that so-called personhood amendments are a divisive, dangerous, and destructive attack on women.
To American women, their reproductive health and choice is an intensely personal and private issue between themselves, their families, and their doctors, the DNC chairwoman said. But Republicans in Washington and across the country have tried to limit these rights, with their assault on Planned Parenthood in Congress and restrictive laws in the states being among several examples.
Now," she said, "the effort by the far right [is] to pass these so-called personhood amendments--divisive, dangerous, and destructive laws which would cripple a womans right to choose, limit access to birth control, and put the lives of women with difficult pregnancies at risk.
Wasserman-Shultz called the personhood amendments being considered or petitioned for in Mississippi, Ohio, Texas, Kansas, and Florida the most extreme assault on a womans right to choose.
Personhood amendments define when a human being becomes a "person" under the law. An amendment proposed in Mississippi, for example, says that a person is every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.
Wasserman-Shultz said that the Mississippi amendment--which will go before voters on Nov. 8--will outlaw all abortions and some forms of birth control (presumably because they kill human embryos) and also IUDs, the morning-after pill, and in vitro fertilization procedures that create and discard human embyros.
Under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states are required to provide equal protection of the law to all persons.
Wasserman-Schultz said that one of her main goals was to dissuade Florida voters from signing a petition needed to get a personhood amendment on the ballot there in 2012.
Were sounding the alarm bells now because its absolutely critical that Floridians understand just how extreme this personhood campaign is, what it would do to not only a womans right to choose but to saving the lives of women, to the opportunity for parents to be--the opportunity for men and women to become parents when theyve not been able to, she said.
Florida's proposed amendment says: The words person and natural person apply to all human beings, irrespective of age, race, health, function, condition of physical and/or mental dependency and/or disability, or method of reproduction, from the beginning of the biological development of that human being."

Being hot and bothered about (horny for) abortion (baby murder) is sick. These godless Marxist people are not extremists. They’re just plain evil.
The election of 2010, the Tea Party phenomenon, the chord struck by Sarah Palin's personal example----all this and more indicates it is Wasserman-Schultz and Hussein Gaga who are radically sick.
America evinces a rising which will drive out the demons in the manner of an electoral exorcism.
The Axis lost WWII; the Nazis won. Their ideas thrive, while those that drove Americans back then have been forgotten or pushed out of the public square. Abortion was one of the crimes against humanity that was justification for the hanging of Nazis at Nuremberg.
No, Congresscritter Whatsyername-Shoot, it's neither extreme, nor radical, what it *is*, irrefutably, is basic biology. Science, and all that. Got it?
the infowarrior
Deb is just plain stupid.
I never listen to a woman with a hyphen name. It means she has trouble deciding.
It is a scientific fact that life begins at conception. It is time to deal with that inconvenient TRUTH. The truth is NOT divisive, dangerous, and destructive, Debbie.
Even some Democrats know that life begins at conception, but have been weasel-wording the "viability of the growing embryo" to allow murder of the unborn.
Just admit it, Debbie, and propose new laws to codify murder of the unborn; then our culture of death will be complete. That is, give the mother the right to kill her children, rather than pretending that the baby is not really a baby but some a mass of growing protoplasm that is not viable outside the womb.
Sorry sir. I will agree that Ms Wassermann-Test is “bothered”. But she is not now, nor has she ever been in any way “hot”.
One area my liberal friends will not discuss with me is this matter of murder (used to be a liberal term called abortion but now it is called choice). I simply do not tip toe around the issue. If the baby is not human at conception, then it has to be either a pig or an acorn. I would agree with them if they can prove to me that if not human, then either a pig or an acorn. That is the fundamental argument - human, pig or acorn. No other choice.
As you stated the scientific method (observe, theorize and then test, test, test)says human, DNA says human, biology says human, all science known to mankind says human. Why not “man up” and admit the baby is human and admit that murder is what the offending liberal is doing.
Denying humanity is what any human must do to rationalize the mass murders that he or she commits. We saw this with Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot and we see it with todays liberals. No excuse. Life does begin at conception, simply check the DNA.
Who knew! /s
So Debbie...if “reproductive health and choice is an intensely personal and private issue between (women) themselves, their families, and their doctors,” why exactly am I supposed to pay for it??? Dumber than a box of rocks, sorry for insulting the rocks.
“...this is an extreme and radical...”
So was Jesus
At conception, the egg, through fertilization, is transformed into a unique entity (a scientifically proven fact...DNA). You can deny it personhood, but that doesn’t change the TRUTH that it IS a unique new person (no matter what stage). A fetus is not an aardvark or some other animal; nor is it a lump of flesh or part of the mother; rather a seperate human person totally dependant on the mother to nuture him/her.
What part of this doesn’t Ditzy Debbie get? I think she gets it quite well, but will lie and deny and deceive to further promote her evil agenda embraced by an evil culture.
Correct! Abortion is child abuse; its proponents are child abusers. Mrs. Schultz should stop sticking her fingers in electric sockets and perhaps take a Wasserman test. Her mind is rotting away, a positive test will confirm.
They can call it choice, but that is a deception. The fact is it is called “choice” so you will mentally “look the other way” as they kill a baby the mother does not want. If you think TRUTH, abortion is a horrible thing we allow. Dare not to contemplate the possibility of an infant soul, as you were taught when you were a child.
When a liberal doesn’t like something, it’s ‘divisive’—when they do something that’s actually destructive (like killing human babies), it’s ‘courageous.’
The whole vernacular of the pro-abortion left has always been sickly amusing. They seem to spend almost all their energy on correcting perceptions. They never seem to stop and think about why this is necessary.
