Darcy Burner's claims of a Harvard econ degree an exaggeration
Seattle Times ^ | 11/2/11 | Emily Heffter

In recent weeks, Democratic congressional candidate Darcy Burner has touted her Harvard degree in economics when talking about the nation's financial crisis and her opposition to the bailout package passed by Congress.

At two debates this month, she brought up her academic background in her opening statement.

"I loved economics so much that I got a degree in it from Harvard," she said at an Oct. 10 debate at KCTS-TV. "Now everywhere I go in this district, the only thing people want to talk to me about is the economy."

But while she took courses in economics, Burner doesn't have a degree in the subject from Harvard.

She does have a bachelor's degree in computer science, the university said. And her academic transcripts show she took five economics courses, enough to earn an emphasis in economics within her computer science degree.

Even if it was true, Harvard is no indication that you learn anything.

Seems she didn't pass the course on how to falsify and suppress actual education experience like Obama did, either.

Typical Democrat liar. it must be genetic.

Sorry, she didn’t lie. She got a degree from Harvard, and at Harvard she took a lot of Econ courses. Officially they recognize that as a “emphasis” on her degree in computer science, but that’s not enough of a distinction to call her claims a lie.

She has a degree in Computer Science with an emphasis on Economics - fine with me. My question is why you felt compelled to post an article from 2008?

I would be dollars to donuts that all those courses simply assumed the Keynesian model and taught “economics” from that basis.

With all due respect, I think some who’s completed a computer science degree has undergon much more rigor and scholarship than one with even a doctorate in Economics.

Why? Simple - the computer sciencist has to produce things that at least compile...and work reliably. (Microsoft excepted, of course)

As for economics degrees, I have two words which prove that the degree is not worth much: Paul Krugman.

Now this woman’s demonstration of incompetence is not the degree, but the fact that she’s a dim-bulb-crat.

She said she got a degree in economics. She didn't. She lied.

Burner, a former Microsoft manager, lost close, hard-fought races to Republican Rep. Dave Reichert in 2006 and 2008.

She has been living in the nation’s capital as director of a group called Progressive Congress.Org. She will spend much of the summer touring with House Democrats’ Progressive Caucus touting a liberal program to restore American jobs.

“How to make a job 101” is not taught in school..much less the Ivy League.

Maybe because Burner is running for congress again after losing in 2006 and 2008.

As a current candidate for public office her past is just as valid a subject as is that of any other current or likely candidate such as Herman Cain, Barack Obama, Mitt Romney, Rick Perry or Joe Biden.

She strongly implied that she received a degree in economics from Harvard while never mentioning that her real degree was in Computer Science. I completed 32 hours of a masters degree in public administration/political science but had to drop the program when I was transferred; that does not give me any reason or right to imply that I am a political scientist. The masters program I finally completed was in Information Technology, which I can claim.

Her statements were meant to mislead, that is, to lie.

A Harvard degree guarantees you DIDN’T have proper learning in the subject in which you received the “degree”.

I can see how it could happen. I kinda accidently might have mentioned I had a medical degree (I took a first aid course) to a couple of women when I was out bar hopping last Friday.
