'Snowtober' fits U.N. climate change predictions
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/1/11 | Geoff Mohan

While the Northeast is still reeling from a surprise October snowstorm that has left more than a million people without power for days, the United Nations is about to release its latest document on adaptation to climate change.

The report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is expected conclude that there is a high probability that man-made greenhouse gases already are causing extreme weather that has cost governments, insurers, businesses and individuals billions of dollars. And it is certain to predict that costs due to extreme weather will rise and some areas of the world will become more perilous places to live.

Federal climate scientists have labeled 2011 as one of the worst in American history for extreme weather, with punishing blizzards, epic flooding, devastating drought and a heat wave that has broiled a huge swath of the country. Weather related losses amounted to more than $35 billion even before the Nor'easter shellacked the East Coast.

Among the more costly events in the U.S. this year was the flooding of the Mississippi River and tributaries due to rapid melting of the Rocky Mountain snowpack and early spring rains. That event, which prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to open a Mississippi River spillway and flood more than 4,000 acres in Louisiana, caused billion of dollars in direct damage.

surprise October snowstorm

So who declared it to be a surprise. FReepers were talking about it days ahead of its arrival.

Here in Southern Michigan we usually see our first snow around Halloween. Sure enough, the day before yesterday we had a rain snow mix.

If colder weather indicates global warming, then why in hell did they hide the decline?

That’s the beauty of AGW theory, it’s unfalsifiable. Snow, drought, sunny, cold, warm, hot, rainy or dry. All observations confirm global warming at the 100% confidence level.

"... 'Snowtober' fits U.N. climate change predictions"

Right, because no kids in Reno Nevada ever went trick-or-treating on Halloween in their flippin' snow suits before Global Warming was revealed to citizens of planet Earth. Oh sure, that never happened.

And before Climate Chance, no pioneers ever got caught in a mid-Autumn blizzard up in the Sierra Range and had to resort to cannibalism after being snowbound until the next Spring, either.

This year the local 12,000' peak had ice on it all year 'round until the latest snow put another coat of snow on top of last season's snowcap. I think that's officially regarded as a 'glacier', never mind how small it is. You'd think that environmentalists would be cheering the local halt to 'de-Glaciation' that they were bemoaning in the breath they took just the moment before, but I guess even THIS is cause for alarm.

Over in the local railroad museum, there's an antique snowdrift-clearing locomotive that looks like a giant radial buzzsaw designed to bore ice tunnels through avalanches and giant snowdrifts across railroad tracks through the Sierra. They were last used in about 1899, but I suppose that horrifies Climatologists that nature may cause us to break them out again.

I guess we all know the drill by now. Whatever happens that causes any problems is the result of Globull Warming.
