German troops storm Greece. Putin's tanks crush Latvia. France humbles the British Army. Unlikely, yes, but as Angela Merkel says euro meltdown could endanger peace, a historian's imagination runs riot...
The date is October 29, 2018, and Britain faces its darkest hour. On the battlefields of Europe, our Armed Forces have been humiliated.
In makeshift prison camps on the continent, thousands of our young men and women sit forlornly, testament to the collapse of our ambitions.
From the killing grounds of Belgium to the scarred streets of Athens, a continent continues to bleed. And, in the east, the Russian bear inexorably tightens its grip, an old empire rising from the wreckage of the European dream.
Yesterday, after a run of military defeats unequalled in our history, the Prime Minister offered his resignation. There is talk of a National Government, but no one has any illusions of another Churchill waiting in the wings.
In suburban streets across Britain, old men and callow teenagers are digging defensive positions in the cold autumn air. But with equipment scarce and ammunition non-existent, the Home Guard would barely last a week.

Otherwise, makes for some interesting reading.
Heh heh. You noticed that little inconvenience. Europe couldn't even take on Serbia until Uncle Sam came in and did it for them.
Only takes the union of the biggest national militaries. And Germany's one of the biggest munitions and war-machine producers right now (sound familiar?) not to mention that the Bundeswehr by itself is second only behind the USA in international military deployments.
Europe does not have enough military left to conduct a war...or to defend herself against an invader
You're about a decade and a half behind the times. They wanted the USA to come in and fight that war so that they could sit back and relax. Why else did Kohl start that war?
Europe couldn't even take on Serbia until Uncle Sam came in and did it for them
Yup..that’s the problem. No way that the Brits could project a force into continental Europe...now nay they can supply, sustain it..
With the European nations' sovereignty and military power weakened after decades of progressive erosion, their citizens disarmed, and their governments choked into inaction for fear of violating the almighty rule of "tolerance," Russia under Putin appears to be re-emerging as the dominant military, economic, and political power in western Eurasia.
Just my take on all of this.
Right. And if there's anyone who's perfected the art of "just-in-time" munitions, it's them.
They have soccer hooligans. Just liquor them up a bit.
However they may just end up burning their own buildings down.
I could see Russia retaking some of Soviet block countries, but it is quite unlikely any other European people would agree to go to war. Especially with no money.
The big question is: would be Putin be content with annexing a few Satellites, or would they try for something more?
Well, that was a fun little doomsday prediction. I’ve loved this kind of stuff since “On the Beach” and “Dr. Strangelove.”
I noticed that the author failed to mention the impact that his scenario would have on the large Islamic minorities in countries like France, England, the Netherland, or Sweden. Surely they’re not going to just sit around when the civil society around them crumbles.
In any case, who the hell knows what the world will be like in 2016, let alone next year? The only thing I can do is be prepared and be mindful of my own actions. If Europe falls apart, well, it wouldn’t be the first time that’s happened, either.
Once I heard this definition of history: “It’s just one damn thing after another.” So true.
I don’t see them having war on each other, but I do think the breakdown of the Euro and the EU are posibilities, with riots, xenophobia and nationalism. This wouldn’t translate to war, but trade would collapse and travel between states would become dangerous. It is already getting dangerous for German tourists in Greece. They built the EU to prevent war, but they will recreate the aftermath of World War II, just without the bombed out cities.
I put in much of the last half of the 'Sixties in Germany, helping "defend Europe." That policy was a mistake. It allowed Europeans to squander their treasure on socialism instead of spending it on their own defense.
Another reason it was a mistake is that billions of dollars of US treasure were frittered away, with precious little in return.
Generals, even Freeper Generals it seems are always preparing to fight the LAST war. The next one however will be totally different, fought not with tanks and guns but more likely with bits and bytes and societal chaos. Time marches on!
“France humbles the British Army.”
Is this the Onion?
Also, the attack won’t be in a tradition domain, it will be cyber
“Yup..thats the problem. No way that the Brits could project a force into continental Europe...now nay they can supply, sustain it..”
Why not? Alliance with France...The Chunnel... both are nuclear armed. I don’t see the problem.
Sadly, a lot in this scenario makes sense but...Sarko as Napoleon? Not seeing it.
“But Russia might find it a golden opportunity to do what America had prevented it from doing for 60 years: Invade western Europe.”
Yes...but why? They can’t really even defend the borders that they have now. And for what? Mineral wealth? Maybe they would like a nice port, but that’s about it.
