Cain momentum continues; South could be key
AP/YahooNews ^ | 10/29/11 | SHANNON McCAFFREY

Herman Cain's rise in the polls appears to be no fluke. Unlike some other Republican presidential contenders who have flamed out fast after auditioning as the conservative antidote to Mitt Romney, Cain is still riding high atop public opinion surveys. "They said I was the flavor of the week," the Georgia businessman said at an appearance Friday on a campaign swing through Alabama. "But four weeks later the Cain campaign still tastes good!" Cain lacks the money and organization of his top-tier GOP competitors. But, so far, he's survived several high-profile campaign blunders and an onslaught of attacks on his signature 9-9-9 tax overhaul plan. And despite the sudden rise to the top tier of the GOP, Cain is still doing things his own way.

Cain may well be what many hoped Sarah Palin was.

Ignore the people at their own peril.

We are merely finishing what was started in 2009 and 2010.

Actually, as someone who has watched all the debates so far, I think she has a terrific grasp of the issues - and she looks good while doing it.

Michele Bachmann is a say anything to win pol. She is, and has been, very dishonest all through this campaign. The irksome thing is she didn’t have to be and did it anyway beginning with lying about her personal finances, trashing Sarah Palin first hehind the scenes and then with rollins out front, misleading the public about her 23 foster children who she said she ‘raised’ when in truth, none of them, all teenage girls, were with the Bachmanns for longer than three months or less and only two at a time. The Bachmanns were compensated by the state for each of these kids and it was like an assembly line.
She lied about the family reunion she never showed up for. And these are besides the gaffes she made about John Wayne and Elvis Presley et al.
Her dishonesty is what shot her down with me. If you are dishonest about little things, how can I trust you on the big things?

“It makes no sense for Cain to invest a lot of time and effort where he can’t win.”

I like that he is strong in the south but I’d like him to spend some time in Iowa, win it and maybe stop in NH to touch base enough with the TEA Party folks and make sure that he comes in at least 2nd there.....then head south and west and wipe the floor with the damned RINO.

I used to have a part time business dealing in old furniture mostly from the twenties and thirties and solid wood. I noticed that when I made a buy at an auction and the old hands who were considered experts told me that I had paid too much and there was not a dime left in it I would usually double my money or better and do it quickly. When the same folks slapped me on the back and told me what a great buy I had made I knew I had stepped in it and could look forward to owning that piece for six months until I would give up and take it back to the auction to sell for whatever it would bring and move on.

What many voters find appealing about Cain is that he comes across as genuine, is comfortable in his own skin and is not concerned with political correctness - he says it as it is.

Many are initially turned off by Cain. He can come across as rough around the edges, seems a little unpolished (with regard to being president) and too quick to make off-the-cuff remarks. However, as you get to know him, you come to appreciate these qualities and you come to realize that Cain is not some slick, smooth politician who speaks in scripted soundbites and surrounds himself with handlers.

After having taken a hard look at Cain's background, it is obvoius that he has the intellect, character and experience to be a very effective president. He is a born leader who knows how to get things done. People get too hung up on the fact that he has not previously held political office. That is NOT a requirement to be president.

People worry unnecessarily about Cain's lack of "foreign policy" experience. They forget that a president has a Cabinet and a huge staff of people who will advise him of every situation that comes up. What is required of the president is to receive all this information and then make the decision that is most consistent with fulfilling his pledge to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Preserving, protecting and defending the United States Constitution is the president's core duty. Not to memorize what salad fork to use at the State Dinner, or how to properly greet the Queen of England or to who the president of Uzbekistan is off the top of his head. He'll have people to tell him these things when he needs to know it. What we need now is a president who is a proven leader who actually loves his country and will surround himself with the right people to do his job effectively. Not another "get-along-to-go-along" "reaching-across-the-aisle" career politician hack.

What turned me off from Michelle was .....

I liked her before I didn’t like her as well. No loss with Rollins but quite a few people quit her campaign....I wonder why. She would do well to drop out now and help Cain.

"....I honestly believe she really wasn’t running to be the Republican nominee as much as she has been running to simply raise her profile to improve her position in the House...."

Michelle would make an incredible Speaker of the House and an almost laughable juxtaposition to Nancy Pelosi.

Maybe it shouldn’t be a factor for who’s going to be president, but who would you rather share a beer with? Who do you imagine you would feel more comfortable with? Who do you think would at least listen and understand your concerns better?

I like Cain for a whole lot of reasons. One of them is he has a nice speaking manner and I wouldn’t turn off the TV if he spoke on TV like I have to with our alien-in-chief.

Obama had no executive experience. He was in politics his entire life. Cain has executive experience running a large private sector company. It can’t be any more difficult to run the country than it can be to run a pizza company. And he is not promising to be all things to all people, like the One has been. He’s the guy the GOP should have nominated four years ago. Another white guy just won’t connect with people, especially if he’s well off like Mitt Romney.

Disclaimer; I HAVE BEEN WRONG IN THE PAST!!! Now then, I don’t see any way it happens for Bachmann, the women of America DO NOT want to see a woman in the white house and they are the majority of voters. Women have the final say for that reason, if they wanted a woman Hillary would be running for reelection. I have said this many times and I am still waiting for a woman to tell me I am wrong, so far it has not happened. I thought for a week or so that Perry had it, hence the disclaimer above. I don’t see Perry reviving now. I don’t see any new candidate emerging. It would seem to be between Romney and Cain at this point unless Newt can pull off an incredible upset. Romney is weak in the South, where a GOP candidate MUST be strong. Going on the theory that what happens in politics is usually the thing that was least expected early on I think it is quite possible that the FReepers who said that Obama had closed the door for any black man were 180 degrees out. He may just have opened the door for a REAL black man.

I think his obvious lack of preparation for the role has been a disappointment to me. I would even say, since I have a very high opinion of the kind of person I want in the White House, I’m a bit angry over this act of carelessness.

I would not mind Perry being the nominee too much. But I agree with you.....he came into the race with an arrogance and expectation for a coronation. I am happy he did not get a coronation and has had cold water thrown in his face instead.

Our candidates must be positive, upbeat and ready for any challenge. Our candidates must be stronger, better prepared and tougher than what is expected of the other side.

Cain has followed an unorthodox path which every expert will tell him is crazy

He must have read "Lateral Thinking" by Dr. Edward DeBono.
