U.S. advisers recommend Gardasil HPV shots for boys

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Boys should be routinely vaccinated against the human papillomavirus or HPV in an effort to protect them from oral, anal and penile cancers, and to extend protection of girls from cervical cancer, U.S. vaccine advisers said on Tuesday.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, voted unanimously to recommend routine use of Merck & Co's Gardasil in 11- and 12-year-old boys to fight the sexually transmitted virus, with 13 yes votes and one abstention.

Previously, the CDC had said doctors are free to use the vaccine in boys but had stopped short of recommending routine vaccination.

Boys aged 13-21 who have not been vaccinated should be given a catch-up dose of the vaccine, which is given in a three-dose series. Men aged 22 through 26 may be vaccinated but the vaccine is not recommended for routine use, the panel said.

Currently, the CDC recommends HPV vaccinations made by Merck and GlaxoSmithKline for girls and women between the ages of 11 and 26.

The prior recommendations were based largely on evidence that the vaccine protects boys from genital warts but the new recommendations reflect several studies showing the vaccine helps prevent cancers in boys as well, Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a conference call with reporters.

The HPV vaccine offers an opportunity to decrease the burden of HPV in both males and females, Schuchat said.

"In addition to providing a direct benefit to boys, there is also the potential that the vaccine will reduce the spread of HPV from males to females," she said.

The background of this has been triggered by the data which showed that the primary cause of throat cancers is oral sex not smoking. And the NY public school system has decided to offer how to do it comprehensive sex education

I don't live or even work in NYC but appreciate the implications raised by your comment. How Bloomberg was ever allowed to run as a Republican is beyond my comprehension. Since being elected mayor, his left wing agenda of implementing a nanny government, has raised the shackles of many NYers. Pendulums swing. I still hold out hope for NY.

None of which negates the health hazards from Gardasil, which poses risk with no possible payoff for chaste people.

I believe in the principals of freedom. Even the right to be free from hedonists trying to construct a safe sexual playground for themselves. I don't need drugs that are not entirely reliable and safe to protect myself not my progeny from sex we aren't engaged in.

Sorry my beliefs that you and people with your mindset do not have a right to subject me or people like me to unnecessary treatments to make us into safe potential sexual toys for you and people with your ideals.

For the record, I am all for letting those who refuse to curb their appetites encounter whatever consequence that has, and take or not take any precautions they desire at their own choosing.

I didn't say anything [nor did this article] about letting the governments dictate/mandate what drugs would be required for me or my prodigy to consume. You made a WRONG assumption.

If you think humans can all be chaste and we'll never have to worry about such diseases, you are the epitome of ignorance. We are merely animals with animal instincts as much as we would like to think otherwise.

I'm not saying this particular drug is good or bad but, reality rules the day. These diseases are a fact of life and due to their potential spread, we must be vigilant.

The reality is that only homosexuals get anal warts or whatever this drug is supposed to protect from. The assumption with this vaccine is that a huge number of these boys and girls are going to be hedonist little vermin having sex with anything that walks, crawls or breathes. The reality is that abstinence works - every time it's tried! Really! Humans are not beasts of the field that must rut on some other beast whenever the thought crosses their minds! Add to this that there have been a lot of stories of very bad reactions to girls that had this vaccine. When my kids were small, there were vaccines against polio and DPT, I think that was about it. Now there's 20 odd diseases. I survived mumps and measles just fine. And who knows how some of the crap in these vaccines affects some kids. Now they want to give kids a vax for a disease they can ONLY GET if they act like sluts or marry someone who acted like a slut.

I've got an idea - teach the kids about all the horrible diseases they can get acting likes sluts with graphic photos and descriptions. Real "sex ed"!
