It's a national Emergency Alert System test and it has been done at least once before, possible twice.

In any case I run a monthly test on three of the radio stations I work at. They aren't shut down at all. They are used to relay the message.

While I'm no fan of the EAS, there should be a system in place to relay national emergencies. My problem with the EAS is that it doesn't work as it should. When we had operators on duty at stations the test was supposed to be run by the operator and logged. Now many stations don't have anyone on duty overnight and some even during the day. Because of that EAS is trying to automate the system. That is what the test is about.

I understand the concern however many of the same people worrying about this test would probably also be upset if we didn't relay local, state or national emergency data.

IMO the people making a fuss about this - well intention-ed as they may be - are doing more damage than good.

Conelrad tests are nothing new. Same thing.

I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me much if the Birchers got this same paranoia when Truman originally instituted the system. If this illustrates the mindset of the The Maine Tea Party, they appear to be equally psycho.

I just checked the IMPACT EARTH! generator by Purdue, and it actually wouldn’t do much damage to the Earth itself according to them. Only thing is though you can’t choose for it to impact any one of a bunch of cities throughout the world, so you can’t immediately extrapolate the expanse of damage in your head.

I'll take this 3 min. PSA over the weekly 1:00 p.m. on Saturday testing of the local emergency sirens anytime - those make the dogs howl.

Michael Rivero, you never really left us did you?

So wait... this “emergency test” will take place within one day of a projected asteroid coming that close to earth?

Heck, one of a PREDICTED (since May mind you) near miss is pretty damn close and can be miscalculated.

Something is off and scary about this.

One slight correction I would make. The speech YESTERDAY in Las Vegas, I believe, will go down in history as perhaps the first OBVIOUS sign that Obama has given up on any illusion of respecting the separation of powers in our government. Bypassing Congress to directly give money to people via refinancing of their homes... Nothing short of a direct payoff, IMO.

I swear, if the GOP doesn’t say ANYTHING about his actions being tantamount to the act of a DICTATOR I will do everything I can to support Conservatives to TAKE OVER for the Republicans in office currently.

This needs to be stopped. The freedom of communication via cell, internet or even TV should not be allowed to be taken away by the government under any circumstances.

What’s the grounds for this “shut down” claim?

There’s a coordinated voluntary compliance with an organizational process for testing getting a warning message out - that’s fine, and a reasonable activity for the FCC to coordinate (hey, if something big enough to warrant contacting everyone is needed, nice to have the protocol in place).

There is NOTHING indicating a “shut down”. There is no master switch, nothing is being shut off. Pure hysteria.
