Perry unveils his plan tomorrow. I suspect we’ll see vigorous debate once that happens.
I’m not impressed.
I'm sure it is all nuanced and the rest of us are just dumb rednecks who can't understand.
I may be wrong, but my understandin of the immigration law is that if you are ever found to be in this country illegally, you can never obtain citizenship and even jeopardize chances of ever being allowed any sort of Visa... has that changed??
ok, so what... Are you cool with open borders under ANY condition? Oh and we do not have an open border policy with Canada, sorry to tell you.
Do you not understand the danger of throwing open our borders under any condition??? Apparently not.
I'm sure it is all nuanced and the rest of us are just dumb rednecks who can't understand.
You won't get an argument on that from me, Bubba!
From the 1982 Supreme Court Ruling that illegals attend Texas public schools free.
Access from Mexico into this country, across our 2,000-mile border, is readily available and virtually uncontrollable. Illegal aliens are attracted by our employment opportunities, and perhaps by other benefits as well. This is a problem of serious national proportions, as the Attorney General recently has recognized. See ante, at 218-219, n. 17. Perhaps because of the intractability of the problem, Congress vested by the Constitution with the responsibility of protecting our borders and legislating with respect to aliens has not provided effective leadership in dealing with this problem.[1] It therefore is certain that illegal aliens will continue to enter the United States and, as the record makes clear, an unknown percentage of them will remain here. I agree with the Court that their children should not be left on the streets uneducated.
That was written in 1982--30 years ago!-- and you want to hold Bush and Perry accountable? LOL! Yes, that is pure ignorance! And it shouldn't be the job of the Alabama governor or Gov. Jan Brewer either!
McCain might have done something...if he was a senator then. He's had plenty of time sense!
The people who blame Perry for the open border and illegal immigrant problem would do better to put pressure on their own congressmen to secure the border. It is NOT the job of the four border states to control the Mexican border. Congressmen from the 50 states are neglecting their duty...not the guvs of the 4 border states.
The bottom line is people in the other 46 states haven't cared until it started to affect them and now they want to bitch and blame the border states!
Why don't y'all do your part instead of bitching and blaming?
Oh! I forgot. You said it, the rest of us are just dumb rednecks who can't understand.
And you prove it again and again!
No comprehende!
Do you know what President Fox’s vision was? [that Perry was refering to]
I did not remember that it was a Supreme Court ruling...but should have!
I think instate tuition would be an extension of this. Had a suit been filed on that in TX? I think I read that in one state the illegals were suing for instate tuition.
I haven’t finished reading up on that law (the link froze my crappy phone), but I do have one question. Was it a matter of “you don’t get federal funds if you don’t educate them” or literally, the feds trying to FORCE states to allow them in...
If so, that is blatanly 10th amendment territory and why haven’t any of our lilly livered good for nothing idiot governors ever challenged it???
My point is, what if a state decides to turn over all education to private schools and give tax money for it back to parents to pay for their children’s education??? Would the feds establish a “federal school” in that state just for illegals??? Please help me understand this... and thank you Doc for the info...
Of course! Which is why I am so adamant against Perry... the fact that he ever even entertained the thought of open borders means his judment is terrible. TERRIBLE. He was attempting to sell us (as a nation) out, so why are you so naive as to think he wouldn’t do it as president??
So if someone is not a supporter of a pro-illegal alien candidate, then they’re a “kook”? Only “info-war/alex Jones” types support the sovereignty of the U.S. and insist on keeping the border CLOSED?
Then, I guess I’m a “kook”
You silly veiled attempts at name calling are quite juvenile
Why would I care about that? It’s not 1980 and Reagan isn’t coming back from the dead to run for President again. So silly to be vetting a non-candidate who isn’t even alive...
We are speaking of the minor children of illegal immigrants who did not have a choice about the way they entered the country. To qualify for in state tuition they must attend school in Texas for three years and sign an affidavit stating they will apply for permanent residency. Their parents do pay various taxes so they provide financial support our state institutions. I’m not saying I like the way things are but as they say, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. They are not going to go away willingly and obviously the feds are not going to make them go away or do anything to secure the border. It’s a bum deal. Perry didn’t create the problem, but at least he’s looking for ways to mitigate the damage.
As I said earlier, the ESL training classes are held all over the country so I am assuming this is not just a tX thing. I also THINK that the instate tuition passed in TX was because a suit was about to be filed on that and there is no way this court ruling wouldn't have extended to instate tuition for illegals for the same reasons...that met all the other criteria.
I'm not a lawyer.
You go girl! I agree 100%!
You nailed it when you said the feds won’t do anything about it. So WHY would we elect a pro-illegal alien candidate to head that federal government?? Shouldn’t we go for the person has the hardest line against foreigners invading our country instead of the one who is the squishiest???? That’s what I don’t understand about the Perry folks
Yes, facts are facts. What is it you don't understand that any US citizen who lives in Texas for 3 years is entitled to the same tuition.
The difference is that the illegals have lived here three years and paid taxes whereas, the citizens from other states haven't.
You know that only 4 state legislators voted against the bill!
And, IYO, who might that be?
What part of ILLEGAL do you and Perry fail to understand? The law is the law. There is no wear out date that gives an illegal special status and privileges...except in your and Perry’s world.
Who said I am a Perry folk? I’m just somebody who prefers to look at the big picture as I examine the candidates and has grown weary of the unsubstantiated wild allegations being thrown around about the various candidates.
I also hate to see what has happened on this site. The level of discourse has gone to the dogs. Snark, rudeness, and hatred for fellow FReepers, their candidates and even their states is what I am reading all too frequently. Why can’t people be for one candidate without viscerally attacking the other and each other? Many long cyber friendships are going by the wayside here. Instead of saying Perry is pro-illegal which is not true, why can’t you say you find him soft on illegal immigration and prefer a candidate who takes a harder line? I am speaking generically here, don’t spread untruths about the GOP candidates for the left to use against us. Keep your eye on the ball which is defeating Obama. We could do a lot worse than Perry or Cain and should be able to discuss their differences politely. In the end conservatives will need to make the decision to either back whoever comes out on top or continue to snipe as Obama walks away with the prize again.
