I don't know what happened with the guy except that he went nuts and set these dangerous animals loose, but this is some crazy scary stuff....

This is simply the ultimate form of animal cruelity, when this person before killing himself, sent these wild animals to their deaths.

It is indeed sad that those animals had to be put down to prevent further tragedies, but the authorities made the right call.

I just wish the guy that let them loose would have called the Columbus Zoo to give them the animals instead. That guy deserves whatever hell he’s going to now.

The Sheriff said had to slaughter the animals cuz it was getting dark out. Too dark for darts. Don't they have night vision goggles in OHIO? Maybe the Governor should order some. IF they had night vision goggles, they could have used more darts and less bullets.

That being said, the guy went nuts and probably the animals were starving and really hungry. The animals were killing each other too.

He had money troubles and the IRS was after him.

I would liketo know who took care of his animals while he spent a year in prison.

Careful, the man was a Vietnam pilot, but have no doubt he had a mental problem. However, people need to make sure these trigger happy cops do not steal these animals and have a mount for the den.

So did the suicide get eaten by one of his cats?

Anyhow who cares what “animal rights” organizations say. What about the humane societies e.g. ASPCA?

What is really INHUMANE is putting wild creatures in a cage in the first place. What could be more cruel for an animal that is meant to be free in the wild?

What human could exist for years in a small cage and keep their sanity?

I found it interesting that one of the deputies killed a black bear with one round from his service pistol. I’d be curious as to caliber.

We have all sorts of these wild animal “refuges” here in Florida. They mostly take in circus animals, such as lions, etc. - and all of the owners I have ever met are nuts.

Generally the neighbors don’t know in advance that dangerous animals are going to be housed there (the owner of the “refuge” will usually get a permit for something like monkeys or zebras, but not mention the tigers and leopards until the roaring starts to bother the neighbors). And when they do know, they don’t approve, for obvious reasons, but it is impossible to get these “refuges” out then because all of the single middle aged ladies who are animal nuts come out and pitch a fit at the city council meetings.

I had occasion to spend time at a house in a very nice subdivision where somebody had moved in to a large property behind the subdivision and installed a wild animal refuge. The roaring of the lions and tigers in the evening (at supper time for the animals) was bloodcurdling, and in the morning the apes and chimps would start to scream. But it was impossible to get the lady who had started it to move or get rid of her animals, even though she had gotten these predators in through deceit. The local police said that there was going to have to be an escape (not unlikely, because she was a little too comfy with the animals and was not careful, from what I heard) before anything could be done.

Sorry, but I have no sympathy for these places.

I was sickened and saddened when I saw the picture of all of those beautifully animals lying dead on the ground. I just imagined the police running around like cowboys having a great time shooting those poor beasts so they could brag about it later. In reality, it was a very big liability for them not to shoot on sight because we all know who would get the blame if one of those animals attacked someone while the police waited for darts to take effect, etc.

All the blame for the unnecessary deaths of these beautiful animals has to be laid at the feet of the guy who let the animals go.

Such gorgeous animals....so sad.

Too bad the guy was so crazy at the end. He could have offered these innocent animals to any number of organizations or wildlife farms who would have cared for them.

It is a tragedy all around.

Two years ago the DNR shot a wild bear in a La Crosse, Wisconsin (my old hometown) park. The small adult, male bear had run into the park after what officials speculated was getting the scent of a female bear in estrus. The park was full of people, and the scared bear quickly climbed a tree in the park. The DNR was summoned and after a short period of discussing what to do, shot the bear dead. Many locals were outraged that the DNR didn't use a dart gun to tranquilize the bear. They couldn't use a dart gun, because they didn't have one.

A short time later a similar situation occurred in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where DNR officials shot and killed a bear in a public park. Again many people were upset, but again the DNR had no dart gun. What should the DNR have done if they had a dart gun? First they could have just cleared the park, if given authority from the local police, and hoped the bear would climb down and leave without hurting anyone. If they managed to hit the bear with a dart but he wasn't fully tranquilized, he could have hurt some people in the park. Then, of course, there would be people saying the DNR should have immediately shot and killed the bear. And there would be lawsuits. Sometimes officials can't win.

In the U.S., lions, tigers and wolves kept by private citizens far outnumber the ones in zoos. Somthing like 8,000 privatley kept lions and tigers.

Sheriff's deputies shot 48 animals — including 18 rare Bengal tigers and 17 lions

Absolutely necessary - these animals could easily have killed people. What wasn't necessary was the need for some idiot in Ohio to keep dangerous exotic animals. The big cats almost certainly were inbred, weren't pure-blooded and served no purpose in keeping the species alive. Apparently the guy also turned loose leopards, baboons, bears, wolves - all perfectly capable of seriously harming or killing any human they encountered. Before the owner shot himself, he was apparently bitten in the head by one of the tigers he freed - hopefully no one else will get hurt.

Ownership of exotic animals by private citizens who have no qualifications to care for them responsibly is one of the few instances in which I support government bans. Unless you own a zoo with excellent security including camera monitoring, lots of space, enclosures which can not be opened without cooperation by several zoo officials, and a trained, highly educated staff with expertise on the care and maintenance of dangerous big cats, you don't need to own a lion or tiger.
