AN 84-YEAR-OLD ex-university official savagely attacked by four young punks during a walk in Wissahickon Valley Park earlier this week theorizes that the beating he endured was a cruel game of "get the old geezer."
Jim Shea, a former vice president of university relations for Temple, from 1968 to 1983, walks up to five miles on Forbidden Drive, in Fairmount Park, three times a week, but that type of stamina wasn't enough to stave off the lowlifes who not only beat him bloody, but dealt a blow to one of the things he holds most dear - his pride.
Shea was near the Valley Green Inn, on Forbidden Drive, in the Wissahickon Valley Park, about 1:15 p.m. Monday when he was hit from behind.
"I felt a real something to the head, a real blow to the head from behind," he said. "It knocked me to the ground; that was the biggie."
Shea said the four assailants continued to beat him for minutes while he was on the ground. He said they were black, appeared to be between 16 and 20, and three of them were wearing La Salle sweatshirts.
Police and Shea said that at least one of the attackers used a rock to hit him, causing deep cuts above his eyes. They all kicked and punched him while he was on the ground, conscious the entire time.
"There was only one I really saw well because he came back to kick me," Shea said. "The others spent a great deal of the time laughing."

It takes a real tough guy to assault an elderly person, doesn’t it? If this man were a Marine those punks would have been very sorry.
Too bad he didn’t have a gun and didn’t kill all of them.
Bump
Tiny local story, a few comments, forgotten tommorow.
“Police said..”
Who is “police said”?

I live in a low crime area as well.....by choice. I am 20 miles from the city, and the few neighbors I have are all packing heat. Of course, in Arizona it is not uncommon to see a rancher with a six gun strapped on in a grocery store. Travis laid out a plan for where one should live a few times here. I took it to heart : )
” In the south, I can legaly CCW, and I do. I hope they never try that crap on me. Im too old for a *$@ whipping.”
If they do, I will be happy to call the county coroner for you : )
Damn good street advice.
Wow, what a leap, LEEP
Im a big dope but it is for other reasons. :)
What I meant to say is it would have been nice if he could have turned it on them.
Actually, I was using old geezer (from the article) as a generic term and not to describe this poor mans situation.
It was a poorly phrased sentence.
Otherwise, I dont mock victims of crimes, the elderly, children, the truely feeble, or the mentally retarded.
Although, I personally know a fellow, probably in his late 20’s at the time, who was being savagedly beaten. His one one ball was hanging out of its socket. He pulled out his gun and blasted away.. and connected.

I’m always careful.....eyes in back of my head.
Exactly right!
I frequently teach newbies the “ropes” when they decide to buy a handgun for self-defense or concealed carry....
My first statement is “Don’t buy/carry a gun unless you are capable of, and have already decided to, take someone else’s life if the need arises.”
The second is: “Carrying a firearm is a tremendous responsibility. You must ALWAYS avoid its emergency use whenever possible by being aware of your location and the situation in which you find yourself. Don’t allow yourself to get into a situation where you MUST use a gun, if at all possible. If you are going intentionally into danger, you really need a rifle.”
SPOT ON!!!!
“This kind of attack shows how far our culture has devolved.”
This kind of attack shows how far down the slope these young black hoods have fallen, and it reflects squarely on the likes of Jessie, Al, Eric and Barry.
Herman to the rescue!
I'd rather my old Dad and other family members could safely walk the streets of my blessed homeland without having to have a combat GI's situational awareness turned on 24/7.
On another note, nobody saw this? With ubiquitous cell phone cameras everywhere? On a busy, well used jogging trail?
Joggers who saw and said nothing, it may be YOU next. At some point, you've got to take a stand.
I agree, and that’s why I included that riverine militia aspect in FEAT.
I jogged there for years --A beautiful trail through Philadelphia's Wissahicon park area
Hehehe. Then why don't they change the name to something a bit less scarey, like "Beautiful Drive"?
Just askin' :)
As an alum of one of the prestigious universities located in the city of brotherly love, I became quite used to hearing automatic weapon fire, pistol and shotgun fire, and packs of feral youths screaming obscenities just outside my dormitory and off campus. None of the schools there are in what one would consider nice neighborhoods. We’d go out to the Villanova bars, or into Center City to avoid any problems with the locals. I visited there last weekend for a birthday party, and you can bet your sweet patootie that the “Austrian Hardware” was nestled very nicely in my Galco IWB. I will not walk the streets there otherwise, and under any circumstances unless I have protection. The economy is so bad, people down there are desperate, so stories like the one mentioned here come as no surprise. Perhaps now, the older gentleman will go to the store and buy a nice Glock 36 with the extended magazines, or even a Ruger LCR with a Crimson Trace laser, chambered in .357.
