AN 84-YEAR-OLD ex-university official savagely attacked by four young punks during a walk in Wissahickon Valley Park earlier this week theorizes that the beating he endured was a cruel game of "get the old geezer."
Jim Shea, a former vice president of university relations for Temple, from 1968 to 1983, walks up to five miles on Forbidden Drive, in Fairmount Park, three times a week, but that type of stamina wasn't enough to stave off the lowlifes who not only beat him bloody, but dealt a blow to one of the things he holds most dear - his pride.
Shea was near the Valley Green Inn, on Forbidden Drive, in the Wissahickon Valley Park, about 1:15 p.m. Monday when he was hit from behind.
"I felt a real something to the head, a real blow to the head from behind," he said. "It knocked me to the ground; that was the biggie."
Shea said the four assailants continued to beat him for minutes while he was on the ground. He said they were black, appeared to be between 16 and 20, and three of them were wearing La Salle sweatshirts.
Police and Shea said that at least one of the attackers used a rock to hit him, causing deep cuts above his eyes. They all kicked and punched him while he was on the ground, conscious the entire time.
"There was only one I really saw well because he came back to kick me," Shea said. "The others spent a great deal of the time laughing."

VERY good chance he was a liberal then and maybe still is
That was exactly the same thought I had..... former VP of university relations 1968-83 = politically correct, white, socialist liberal. Any university back then or today, simply does not hire or promote people with a conservative mindset or principles.
I would be willing to bet his white guilt-ridden complex may not be quite so active any more. He may even be contemplating C&C for all we know.
For those on this thread who don't know about the color-codes, the late Jeff Cooper (a master firearms instructor) created a scale of awareness:
Condition White: oblivious. If attacked in this state, your first awareness that there's a threat will be when the bad guy knocks you down or sticks a knife to your throat.More detailed discussion hereCondition Yellow: relaxed alertness. You are aware of your surroundings, and observant for potential threats. If you are out in public, you should be in Yellow at all times.
Condition Orange: you notice a potential threat. You may be noticing a group of guys looking at you like they are sizing you up, a guy in summer wearing a heavy jacket, whatever. You notice something not right and become very alert. You may take evasive action (cross the street, whatever) and evaluate the response of the potential threat.
Condition Red: the potential threat has revealed himself as a real threat. You draw you weapon and prepare to defend yourself.
That’s some good advice!
Whatever happened to the Guardian Angels? Maybe an organized group of armed escort volunteers is needed. I’ll step up.

In the south, I can legaly CCW, and I do. I hope they never try that crap on me. I’m too old for a *$@ whipping.

Brought to you by your neighborhood government school system. We’ve drained the morality out of your child so you don’t have to.
Exactly.
I do that walk occasionally from the Ridge ave entrance to Bells Mill Rd. and back. It’s occasional because it’s in excess of 10 miles. It’s a beauty. Head on a swivel, 31 rounds.
And a marvelous job they're making of it too!
In a healthy society, elderly people are treated with respect, even reverence. This kind of attack shows how far our culture has devolved. And Im sure there are plenty of liberals who will defend the savages who beat Mr. Shea. A part of their thinking, though they arent quite to the point of admitting it publically, will be that an 84-year-old man is a useless mouth, a person of no value who will probably die soon anyway.
****
I believe there are still plenty of people who respect elders. Just not THIS particular segment of society. Their values, if any, are quite different from the rest of civilized society.
Good one!
How’s about we go hunting instead. No sarc button on.
Perhaps about 50 of us with guns should make the walk with him next time!
#12: Temple, my alma mater (66) was founded by a former Union officer as a Baptist college.
It later expanded to become the largest private university in the country, and affectionately named, in the 1960’s, “Tel Aviv on the Schukyll”.
Today Temple is a very diverse university, with a few marxists on their staff ,esp. the Law School, but Temple students (and I doubt that those from LaSalle, Penn, Drexel or Villanova) go around beating up old white people.
There should be a law that only students and alumni can buy university clothing, or very small children.
The punks give everyone a bad name. Wish Mr. Shea had been packing but in Philadelphia, only the criminals have weapons (including rocks).
Oh where the heck is Rizzo now that we need him? Ramsey, okay but somewhat of a lightweight Police Chief.
friend’s daughter went to temple. Her walk from her dorm to the rest of the campus took her through burned out drug house neighborhoods. That is where all the delicious coeds lived. Insane.
I’m very careful wherever I go,even during daylight hours.
