Euro judges outlaw life-saving embryo stem cell research as immoral

Scientists in Britain face being barred from developing life-saving treatments after a court ruled it is ‘immoral’ to use embryos to produce stem cells.

The European Court of Justice has decreed that patenting any treatment using the cells is ‘commercial exploitation’ and ‘contrary to morality’.

Scientists warned the ‘devastating decision’ will stop pioneering treatments for degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s being developed in the UK, with potentially catastrophic consequences for the multi-million pound biotechnology industry.

But pro-life groups, who argue it is immoral to experiment with embryos to advance medicine, welcomed the ruling.

The decision, made unanimously by 13 judges in Luxembourg, follows a case brought by Greenpeace in Germany against Professor Oliver Brüstle at the University of Bonn.

Professor Brüstle filed a patent with the German government in 1997 to convert embryonic stem cells into nerve cells to help patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Greenpeace challenged it and the case went to the highest court in Germany and then Luxembourg.

The resulting 10-page judgement prohibits patenting any process which involves removing a stem cell from and then destroying a ‘human embryo’ – defined as anything ‘capable of commencing the process of development of a human being.’

It states: ‘Patents may not be granted for inventions whose commercial exploitation would be contrary to morality... In particular patents shall not be awarded for uses of human embryos for industrial or commercial purpose.’

You never know how things will work out! I put down my little web surfer after I posted my last to you, then opened my Bible and the little devotional book, “Our Daily Bread,” and just what was today’s topic, but about two families who had lost teenaged daughters unexpectedly. The scripture was Psalm 37:23-26, where the Psalmist speaks of God upholding the righteous in His hands,especially during times of sorrow and trouble. May He uphold you and yours in this time of sorrow!

Awww...Your daughter had a good voice. That’s a nice tribute and something you’ll always have. You’re in my prayers and so is your daughter’s friend. I’m sure that is something she will live with for the rest of her life.

Killing humans is not life-saving. Also, it seems this only prohibits the patenting of the process.

What the judges have ruled is it is fine to kill humans...but it is not fine to save humans, when we’re trying to kill them. If life extending drugs were actually created, then state owned lives could be extended and we’re trying to KILL THE HEALTHCARE HOGS and we’re trying to get the point across of JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS FOR OLD BAGS...we MUST depopulate the world:

Dear FRiend,
I am so sorry for your tragedy, but your faith and compassion are an inspiration to us all.

The last six months of my life have been a nightmare I lost my husband to suicide, My beloved Dad to Heart Disease, my HEALTH to diabetes, and my Mom, who managed to break her BACK at my dad’s funeral, is in a Rehab hospital right now.

BUT! FR has always been there for me, with pages and pages of prayers, condolence cards, and dear friendships that will last a lifetime.

Prayers up for Melissa, who must be devastated.

No, you did not hijack this thread. The remarks that followed your post are indicative of the meaning of life itself, and very relevant to the original topic. A reminder that “embryos” are potential human beings, with everything that goes with that.

That's amazing, if things are as they appear.

Even broken clocks are right twice a day, and sometimes the leftists get things right for wrong motives.

It's part of why we as conservatives need to be always alert for ways we can make temporary coalitions with people who are long-term problems to accomplish individual objectives on which we can agree.

Evangelical Protestants and Roman Catholics have long been used to working together to fight abortion, despite major differences on critical issues. Maybe in Europe, the Greens, for their own reasons, have a share in the fight against using babies as research objects. After all, we've been complaining for years that the envirowackos love baby seals more than baby humans, and perhaps on this point Greenpeace is going to be consistent in defending life of baby mammals, even if they happen to be humans ;-)

sounds like good news, but am a bit puzzled because I thought they had wide open abortion throughout the EU.

Perhaps the court has had new appointments, or perhaps one or some of the judges accepted Christ?

Sugar, rice, potatoes, pasta, starch, certain fruits, Soda pop, bread, muffins, cake, bagels, cantaloupe, watermelon, corn, cornmeal, tacos, ketchup, BBQ Sauce, Real Ice Cream, Flavored Yogurt, peas (no big loss!), and anything bleached or white in color. DANG!

BUT...I have lost 15 pounds already, so the LORD works in mysterious ways.

Last time I checked embryonic stems cells and embryonic stem cell research had not saved or improved a single life.

Adult stem cells on the other hand have saved lives.

Embryonic Stem Cell research was abandoned in the early 1980’s because the new technology of Adult and Umbilical Cord research garnered results.
