On CNN’s Newsroom this afternoon, anchor Brooke Baldwin observed that at last night’s GOP debate, Rick Perry kept referring to fellow candidate Herman Cain as “brother.” “Did you notice that while you were watching?” Baldwin asked her audience, replaying Perry’s comments.
PERRY: “Herman, I love you, brother, but let me tell you something, you don’t need to have a big analysis to figure this thing out…At the end of the week, I’m going to be laying out a plan that clearly — I’ll bump plans with you, brother, and we’ll see who has the best idea about how you get this country working again.”
I counted two there. Seriously! Let me know,” Baldwin exclaimed. “And here is what a Perry spokesperson said, ‘He is a friendly fellow. He uses that kind of language. And he views all those folks on stage as colleagues, as fellow Republicans and he speaks accordingly.’”
Baldwin questioned CNN political correspondent Mark Preston over Perry’s use of the term.
“As I was watching last night, I definitely made note of that,” Baldwin said. “And I’m sure you did as well.”
“Sure, it’s certainly something the Perry campaign does not want to be talking about right now,” responded Preston. “They want to talk about what they think was a very strong performance for the Texas Governor. We have to be very careful not to characterize what he was saying. They are saying that he meant nothing by that and in fact he’s not racist and what have you. It would be interesting to see what happens if Herman Cain is asked that question and if Herman Cain decides that he doesn’t have a problem with it, then I do think the issue is dead, Brooke.”

Then there are the parking lot people. Those are guys who bring their little girls to Sunday school and they catch some Zzzzzz time in the parking lot. We got one of those for President.
If you put in a Perry or a Cain you will be getting a President who GOES TO CHURCH on Sunday and Wednesday evening! He may even hit a few Friday evening church dinners.
Guess that means Mitchell is the very same religious bigot I always thought she was.

Bachmann and Palin were both driven from their traditional family churches by Ignorant and vicious attacks by non-Christians in the media.
Because I also call people brother. Cain seems to think black people deserve special treatment. He didn’t say poor or poverty level he said black and if Perry saying what he said offends you, that should offend you more.
As others have pointed out, if it was a religious or cultural thing, how come he only addressed Cain that way. Struck me that perry was attempting to diminish Cain by trying to talk “black” to him.
In less enlightened time, that was exactly what the word “boy” was used to do.
These Baptists and Baptist types call each other "brother" all the time, particularly the Associate Ministers.

They could also both be Freemasons. We refer to each other as ‘brothers’, although, usually not in the way Perry did. It is also a completely friendly and respectful address.
I think there is, unfortunately, an uncommonly large number of hardboiled Protestants in Texas, particularly Baptists—I’m sorry to say—who love whacking fellow professed Christians, Catholics and Mormons in particular. A fair number of George W. Bush’s major Texas backers rejected Romney out of hand in 2008 because they viewed him as a cult member. Dislike of Catholics also has deep roots there. You may recall that in 1960, Texas’ Protestant pastors gave JFK a particularly hard time. I’m not a fan of either JFK or Mitt Romney, but that’s because I detest liberalism, not because of their religion. Inter-Christian strife is always nasty, and in their wisdom our Founding Fathers were keen to avoid replicating Europe’s religious strife here in America. Whether it’s strife between Protestants and Catholics, or between Eastern Orthodox and Catholics, or some new permutation such as non-Mormon Christians vs. Mormons, I don’t want it and I don’t need it. While I view Mormon theology as wacky and differ with Catholics on Marianism and the role they accord to saints, I don’t dispute their Christianity. They believe in Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and no other god beyond that. They affirm that Jesus is God, and that’s good enough for me.
I wouldn’t say Perry is a racist in the virulent sense of a person who hates people of this or that race simply because of their race. But he does have race problems that preclude him winning nationwide, somewhat like how Jesse Helms was a great senator but could never have won the presidency. Perry has N****rhead and a record of having opposed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts as “unconstitutional.” While I oppose the public accommodations provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as an infringement on property rights, I have no problem with the rest of the Act, nor do I have a problem with the Voting Rights Act (of 1965). Southerners who say the Act should be extended to all 50 states have a good point though, in the sense of equal applicaton of the law. But Perry went too far, and he will rightly pay a price for that.
I agree with you and I would never mistake Michele Bachmann for my brother, either. :D
Did you miss that part of Texas history?
Even today it's a majority Catholic area.
Protestants must feel the pressure and understand their presence isn't really wanted.
As far as JFK and the ministers were concerned, JFK wasn't really a good Catholic. None of the Kennedy crowd are you know.
Now, understanding all of that why are you being so hard on the Protestants in Texas? Could it be that you'd like for them to leave?!
It was a koinkydink ~ but he did have some personal conversations with Cain ~ and I have no doubt that he explained the Rock to Brother Cain personally. The result is they have a special tie not shared with the other, mostly Yankee crowd.
I’m a Protestant, myself. I just disapprove of Pastor Jeffress and others who attack whole branches of Christianity. All they have to do is give up making these needless attacks, and I’ll have no beef with them.

As for the immigration issue, your problem is with Perry and not me. Unlike Perry the cheap labor enthusiast, I support stopping illegal immigration cold, deporting all illegals, and sharply reducing legal immigration.

That would be my guess. Here in the south, fellow church-goers, etc., are very often addressed as “Brother” or “Sister”. That’s how prayer requests are listed in church bulletins. It’s a south thing, and not surprising.
