On CNNs Newsroom this afternoon, anchor Brooke Baldwin observed that at last nights GOP debate, Rick Perry kept referring to fellow candidate Herman Cain as brother. Did you notice that while you were watching? Baldwin asked her audience, replaying Perrys comments.
PERRY: Herman, I love you, brother, but let me tell you something, you dont need to have a big analysis to figure this thing out At the end of the week, Im going to be laying out a plan that clearly Ill bump plans with you, brother, and well see who has the best idea about how you get this country working again.
I counted two there. Seriously! Let me know, Baldwin exclaimed. And here is what a Perry spokesperson said, He is a friendly fellow. He uses that kind of language. And he views all those folks on stage as colleagues, as fellow Republicans and he speaks accordingly.
Baldwin questioned CNN political correspondent Mark Preston over Perrys use of the term.
As I was watching last night, I definitely made note of that, Baldwin said. And Im sure you did as well.
Sure, its certainly something the Perry campaign does not want to be talking about right now, responded Preston. They want to talk about what they think was a very strong performance for the Texas Governor. We have to be very careful not to characterize what he was saying. They are saying that he meant nothing by that and in fact hes not racist and what have you. It would be interesting to see what happens if Herman Cain is asked that question and if Herman Cain decides that he doesnt have a problem with it, then I do think the issue is dead, Brooke.

Brother is a term used by christian men to other christian men. Its meaning is very simple we are all gods children and you can address men as brothers and women as sisters. I’m shocked that so few people on this thread don’t know that one.
Maybe it’s a pun, designed to subliminally boost Perry’s reputation. If Cain is his brother, then he must be Abel (sounds like able).
I was s Sarah guy, now a Herminator, a man with some rookie mistakes, but no real character flaws.
Herman is too trusting of anyone in the media and they all set him up with softball questions, leading him, like a rookie into the woodshed.
He is learning but what I really like about him is when he screws the pooch, he admits it, apologizes and puts it behind.
I never had an opinion about perry until he was in the debates and then decided, obummer would beat him like a red-headed stepchild, he is soft on ILLEGAL ALIENS, and he is a career politician, with all that comes with that.
You two are very conservative, it's time to pick a different horse, this one has thrown a shoe and picked up a foot bruise.
Exactly. I hope Cain continues to ignore this little media-generated kerfluffle.
I believe Michele Bachmann is a Christian as well. The thing is that Perry used the word “brother” when he was disagreeing with Cain. Might it have had something to do with the context there? I can’t remember Perry debating Michele Bachmann on anything last night nor did he get in any direct conservation with Newt or Rick Santorum last night (as my memory serves me, but please correct me if I am wrong). I also think I have heard Ron Paul is a Christian but I don’t know if that is correct or not. Here again though, I don’t think Perry had any beef on the BBQ with Ron Paul last night in particular either. Now he DID duke it out with Mitt Romney, and I would suspect he is not about to call Mitt Romney his brother in Christ. He may not bring that in as a voting issue, but I don’t think he would consider a Mormon his brother in Christ still, and my bet is that Romney would not consider an evangelical Methodist his “brother” either.
Perry would make a good President if elected..he is just rough around the edges and was frankly wrong on a few conservative issues(although he is not as bad as some conservatives claim either). The all out assault on him has been over the top too. I know the man..I’m from Texas and voted for him every single time...lol! I’m thinking Cain(although he seems a little over his head as well) or Gingrich at this point.
I still pine for Sarah to change her mind and run or perhaps Paul Ryan to get in!
No ones "playing the race card". What Perry did was most likely not racist, it was just plain stupid. To be on stage with a group of people your competing against and addressing the one black man, and only the black man, as "brother", shows poor judgment and is stupid. It's not a big thing, it just feeds into the belief that many people have that Perry is not suited to running for office outside of Texas.
When I was growing up my mother told me that I would find it difficult to tolerate ignorant people, let alone love them but I should at least try. Perry is from the south, he is a Christian and they are of the “brother” generation. Get used to it. We do believe that we are brothers and sisters in Christ. The South and Christianity have their own culture and language. Wouldn’t expect anyone who works for CNN to understand.
Don’t they know? It’s secret code for the Tea Party members to amass and start chipping away at the southwest corner of the Washington monument with pixie stix.
Maybe he was just channeling his inner Hulk Hogan BROTHER!
I don’t remember McCain calling anyone “comrade.”
I don’t remember McCain calling anyone “comrade.”
Exactly.
Now if Mitt had called Herman Cain brother, that would have been odd.
I dunno..i still am waiting on something...not sure what..but none of them have ‘it’. Don’t get me wrong..I will walk on broken glass to vote for any of them over Obama(except Romney...not sure what I’ll do if he gets the nod). I just pray that they will all stop going after each other and go after OBAMA and the democrats!
Is there a lot of religious bigotry in Texas?”
We love and welcome everybody except those who want big government, try to tell us how to run our lives and our State, aren’t conservative, don’t believe in God, patriotism and the American flag.
my friends...
I'm assuming you're not including Austin in this...
** Thank you **
Thank you, for being the only person on this thread who watched Perry addressing a Rabbi who said, “God Bless You” with “God Bless you, Brother”

“NBC’s Chuck Todd Admonishes Andrea Mitchell for Lame Attempt to Play Race Card on Rick Perry”
[snip]
CHUCK TODD: Yeah, just very quickly on the “brother” thing. That’s a Southern cultural thing.
CHRIS CILLIZZA, WASHINGTON POST: Yeah.
TODD: So I think, you know, there’s, theres times - people want to pick on Rick Perry.
MITCHELL: Okay.
TODD: This is just too easy.
CILLIZZA: I agree. It sounded more like, it sounded to me more like Hulk Hogan saying “brother.”
MITCHELL: It was brother, it was brother Joe Scarborough, Southern culture-
TODD: Don’t forget brother, brother, brother Tim. Our, our late friend Mr. Russert.
MITCHELL: Okay, well-
TODD: He loved to refer to all of us as brother.
MITCHELL: Well it just came off a little bit strangely.
