PHOENIX - After first apologizing for suggesting an electric fence along the border, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain told reporters here Monday that he still thinks it's a good idea for controlling illegal immigration.
"I'm not walking away from that," he said.
Cain has spent the last several days explaining a controversial comment about building an electrified fence along the U.S. - Mexico border that he said could kill people trying to enter the country illegally. On Sunday, he said his comments were "a joke." But talking to reporters here after a meeting here with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has made a national reputation for cracking down on illegal immigrants, Cain reversed course.
Initially Cain apologied when told his remarks had upset some in the state. "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa," he said, using the Latin formula for expressing contrition. But when a reporter challenged his description of his comments, saying he didn't seem to be telling a joke, the retired pizza executive acknowledged: "You're right." He said he still believes in the need for a border fence "and it might be electrified."

Last night Brit Hume was commenting on Herman Cain and the take away I got is that Herman Cain isn’t running to be elected. He has no infrastructure and he remains on his book tour. It will take money and organization to target key states and get voters to the polls.
Cain actually has been a part of the GOP Establishment for some time, and though it is unprovable, his campaign has the hallmarks of one that the Establishment put him up to, so he could split the conservative vote and help Romney win.
That said, he is still looking like the best of our options in the race.
Cain knows he can’t last through the campaign - he is running to increase his value for selling books and making speeches - that, and he would happily love to be Romney’s vice president. He is not a serious candidate - and I hate seeing all of these FReepers get seriously invested in him...just like they did with Palin.
Wow, you’re gonna allow me to speak? Bless your heart
I have made contributions to Cain and to Perry. While I do not agree with either on everything, I would be proud to loudly support one of them as nominee in 2012.
If Romney wins the nom, I am afraid many voters will simply sleep through the election.
“it is flip flopping like this that make him look like an amateur”
There was no flip flopping. This is a BS article from CBS.
If you believe everythig they say you might as well vote for Obama.

All I can say is I hope you’re wrong. Nothing personal, but what he seems to espouse via his rhetoric, is really what America needs in order to recover from our demoralization as a nation.
Go snitch on someone else, son
Cain is getting a taste of what it feels like to be leading in the polls - definite target and intense scrutiny of every word.
As it should be since he’s never really been vetted on the national scene like the other candidates. I suspect there are groups at this point looking into all areas of his past digging for info on his personal life, beliefs, pastoral duties, business associates, political activities, etc. When that is complete we’ll know more about the part time pastor, politician and pizza man.
line up all the bales of pot and when they try to jump on them to cross, light em up...stone em senseless and let them be found laughing at the base of the wall...electric fence would add a new twist...
Herman is an amateur (amateur politician, that is)...and that's a huge part of his appeal.
But in getting the actually job of presidentin' done (i.e. execution)...he's a real professional.
I totally agree
There is a lot of truth to the claim that anyone who wants that job should be disqualified from getting it.
Just what makes you think your property is reflective of the entire US/Mexico border? There are any number of deterrents that may be used to prevent incursion; an electric fence being one of them. The idea is; seal the border, prosecute employers who hire illegals, turn off the spigot of benefits to anyone who’s not a US citizen, and deport those found here illegally. Israel seems to be fairly effective with their border fence. Why can’t we be as successful? It’s a real security issue, ya know?
implant a pigs stomach on them and let them eat!!!!
You think they made up the Herman Cain quotes?
